4 The Brothers i g The events A Civil War-themed Master Mason degree, a lecture from a Pulitzer Prize-nominated Civil War historian and author, a performance of wartime compositions by a renowned orchestra, and a vignette about Abraham Lincoln s affinity for Freemasonry all were part of Brothers in Arms, a one-of-a-kind slate of programs available only in the Valley of Cincinnati. The events came to a close with the Fall 2012 Reunion. It was a day full of the finest degree work and fellowship around. The Valley of Cincinnati was honored to welcome 30 candidates as part of the Brothers in Arms Class, 28 of whom are aged 50 or younger. In their own words... I had a great time watching the degree work and attending lunch with Brethren. I especially liked the Civil War theme. You guys took good care of us while we were there. I had many Brothers come to me and introduce themselves and give me even more insight into being in the Scottish Rite. All in all, it was a great time. Ray Camp I was very impressed by the amount of work that must have gone into the degrees. I enjoyed the synopses that were offered between degrees. Thanks for all the work and for welcoming me into Scottish Rite. Christopher Sparks Thank you for such a great day and providing an experience and atmosphere I will never forget. The degrees were much more than I ever expected. I look forward to participating a great deal moving forward. Jack Brewer The Fall Reunion was one of the most memorable and proudest events of my life! I have learned so much through Freemasonry already, and to know that this is just the start of my journey is an amazing feeling. Freemasonry has made me a better man, husband, and enjoy a better life altogether. I will be a father for the first time in February and am so happy that I have been able to be a part of a brotherhood so rich in tradition and morals that my child will be proud that I am a part of. It was a magical experience and I am so glad I chose to take this path into the Scottish Rite. I would say more, but words can t describe how the Reunion was. My entire family is supportive of this, and my mother and grandfather are so proud of me. My wife loves the fact that all of my friends and Brothers have such morals and are truly respectable. One thing I will say is to anyone thinking about going through the Scottish Rite is do it! Thanks for having me. Brandon Durham I thoroughly enjoyed the Fall Reunion. It means a lot to continue my journey. Being an officer at my home Lodge, Snow No. 193, I realize the preparation, study, and work that goes into putting on ritual work, and the Brethren who participated this weekend did a splendid job. Rudy Ramey What can be said about my experience this past weekend, other than fantastic? I surely have never experienced anything such as that before. Gary Sullivan I had a wonderful time and everyone was as helpful as could be. I learned many new things and am looking forward to continuing my journey. Thanks again for a wonderful experience. Jim Nolen

5 in Arms Class h Founders Hall: The Brothers in Arms Museum The panoramic photo above shows Founders Hall at the Cincinnati Masonic Center transformed into the Brothers in Arms Museum. Authentic Civil War artifacts were on display, including a Gatling gun, a Past Master s jewel, cavalry sabers, a canteen, binoculars, Lodge minutes and records, cartes de visite and a tintype, Civil War tokens, and more. These displays shared the exhibit space with a life mask of Abraham Lincoln, paintings, large-format graphics, and lots more. Special thanks to Avon-Miami Lodge No. 542; Jim Bucholz, M.S.A.; Andrew Clawson; Clermont Social Lodge No. 29; Robert Dumford, 33º; Michael Himes, 33º; McMillan Lodge No. 141; Barbara Reif ; Ben Rosenfield; Cameron Shandersky; John Teller, Jr., 33º; Judge Robert Winkler, 33º; and the Valley of Cincinnati for making the Brothers in Arms Museum possible. A Civil War Reunion: The Valley of Cincinnati in 1863 CINCINNATI: RE-UNION, A. & A. RITE The annual re-union of the members of this Rite took place at their rooms, corner of Sixth and Main street, on the evening of the 26th of February. For the two previous evenings the members worked in the Consistory, and three brethren were duly invested with the grades of that department, including the 32nd. The degrees were fully worked out, with all their imposing ceremonies, and we have rarely seen the work better done. Bro. E.T. Carson presided, and was ably supported by Bros. Brown, Hollinshade, Lucky, Scott, Hanselman, Dodds and others. The meetings were very pleasant, and deeply interesting; he more so as but little work had been done in this Consistory since the commencement of the war, and none since the previous winter. Brethren were present from Cleveland, Michigan, and from the army in Tennessee. The re-union and banquet, on the evening of the 26th, was one of the most agreeable we have ever attended. The table was sumptuously spread, and the arrangements were perfect, under the joint superintendence of Bros. Brown and Scott the committee for the occasion. National flags were conspicuous around the hall, and music lent its harmonies to give additional attractions. At 8 p.m. the brethren sat down to the annual feast, and we can bear testimony that they did ample justice to it. The members had worked hard for two evenings, and they had a right to eat; and, besides, the bountiful supply of substantial and delicacy was sufficient to tempt any appetite and secure a vigorous display of duty with knife and fork. All seemed like saying to the busy caterers, well done, you shall be tried again! The banquet was closed at a late hour, by all joining in the Star Spangled Banner, which was sung with a hearty good will. All agreed it was the best re-union ever enjoyed by the members of this Consistory, and all retired in the best of spirits. We missed the presence of Ill. Bro. Van Rensselar and several others who have heretofore been with us on these annual occasions: some, we have since learned, did not receive notice in time; some were in the army and could not leave their post; and some were prevented by business and distance. May we all meet again. Excerpted from the Masonic Review, April, 1863
