Occasionally, people will ask, Why are we doing Church without Walls or Trunk or Treat? That s a great question! When asking that question, people are often looking for the pay off. They want to see Trunk or Treat (or any other outreach event) translate directly into new members. But that s not quite how it works. Creating a culture that people want to be a part of is what it s about. And that is one major driving factor of church growth. The environment that we create at Saint Paul either attracts or repels people. Church without Walls, Trunk or Treat, and every other outreach to the city sends the message that Saint Paul cares about Amarillo. That will eventually give us permission to share Christ. Several years ago, I was privileged to serve a United Methodist Church with a large, beautiful facility. It has an attractive exterior and great signage too. It also sits on the major street through the center of town. Virtually everyone in town passed by our facility several times a week. But I also noticed that people had no idea who we were. When I would introduce myself as the Pastor of that church, people would often ask where we were located. When I would tell them that we were the church directly across from United Supermarket, a light would come on. Oh, that s your church! Church members wrongly assumed that the community knew who we were and where we were because we had a great location and a beautiful building. But they were wrong. That s when I realized that we had to re-introduce ourselves to the community. That s one of our challenges here at Saint Paul. People won t come to Saint Paul because we have a high-profile location on I-40. But they will come when they learn that we re the church that cares about kids. We re the church that cares for those who are struggling in life. Last week, we had a Church without Walls team give away $5 gift cards at McDonalds. One woman cried when she received a card. Her electricity had just been turned off, and that card was a small token of grace that blessed an otherwise difficult day. When we hand out candy at Trunk or Treat, it sends a message to parents that we care about their kids. Will every single family who comes to our Trunk or Treat end up at Saint Paul? Honestly, no. But Church without Walls, Trunk or Treat, and every other local outreach will pave the way for some. And for me, that s what it s all about! As always, God s best to you! Bill Ivins
2 The Saint Paul Messenger Page 2 Board of Trustees News At its October meeting, the Saint Paul Board of Trustees accepted the resignation of Suzy Compton as its chair and elected Jane Ann Stewart as the new chair. The Board also voted to appoint a Task Force which would explore the facilities needs of Saint Paul and to make recommendations to the Board. The Board also accepted a bid from Norris Audio Video to install a new sound and media system in the Sanctuary. The new system will vastly improve the quality of sound in the Sanctuary. In particular, the Board strove to ensure that the quality of sound is improved for those with hearing impairments. One of the important components of the new system will be a neck loop that can be hung around the neck, thus allowing persons with hearing aids to listen through their own hearing aid. A new digital camera system will be integrated with the audio system in order to greatly improve our live-streaming on the internet. It is also designed to integrate seamlessly with a new media system in the sanctuary in order to improve the experience of Sunday morning worshipers. The move to install new sound and media comes in response to many with hearing impairments who were expressing frustration over not being able to hear well. The Board also became aware that much of the equipment is more than twenty-five years old and at the end of its life. As the Board continued to explore the issue they became aware that the livestream experience needs serious updating. The total bid for the integrated system is $87,258. The Board plans to use $61,177 from funds on hand. Those funds will come from the Lankford Estate. Per the bequest, those monies must be spent by the end of That leaves a balance to be raised of $26,178. The Finance Committee reviewed the plan and the Administrative Council voted to move forward with fund raising in order to raise the additional monies needed. Already, an additional $2500 has been given toward the project, leaving an amount to be raised of $23,678. Should you feel led to contribute to the project, please mark your gift as sound system. The St. Paul United Methodist Women (UMW) will be having their Fall bake sale on Sunday, November 11 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm in the Narthex. This is the second UMW fundraiser for The proceeds from the sale supports local UMW programs and outreach, global ministries, bible studies, etc. We'll be selling homemade cookies, pies, cakes, etc. You can buy something at the sale and put in the freezer for the holidays or for a special occasion! Thank you for your support! Karen Jaramillo
