JOHN S REFORMED CHURCH JUNE 2018 Last week I was asked what resources I use to assist me in ministry. I use a number of tools. I read paper books and e-books. I listen to audiobooks, free from three libraries I frequent. I listen to podcasts on a daily basis and utilize a number of apps on my phone and Ipad. I thought it would be helpful to specifically name some of these resources I use in hopes that they might help you in your daily discipleship diet. Books I recommend reading: Loving Jesus More by Philip Ryken, Born Again by Charles Colson, Quiet by Susan Cain, Ted Talks by Chris Anderson, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell, The Generosity Factor by Ken Blanchard, and Center Church by Timothy Keller. Some of the podcasts that I highly recommend: Rainer on Leadership, Revitalize & Replant, The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe, Insight for Living by Chuck Swindoll, 5 Minutes in Church History with Stephen Nichols and Let My People Think by Ravi Zacharias. Some of my favorite apps: Pocket Casts for podcasts, Todoist to bring order in my life, Audible for audiobooks, Overdrive to access all the free library e-books, Bible, Life on Mission for evangelism, and Ligonier for great teaching. Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. James 5:14-15 Do you believe the above text? If you are skeptical, come to our next prayer meeting. We ll learn and discuss what John Eldredge has to say in his chapter on Physical Healing. He basically teaches that healing prayer is bringing the body into a place where the power of God can flow into the affliction. He explains that we need to present ourselves to be used of God as channels of that healing power. Please come on Wednesday, June 6th at 6:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. It s sure to be an informative and interesting evening. See you then, Sue Weisman ( ) In Matthew 18, Jesus promises to be with us. That s one of the miracles of Stephen Ministry. When one of our Stephen Ministers meets one-on-one with his or her care receiver, Jesus is present as well. He brings the power of his transforming love, and the peace, healing, and comfort that on God can bring. If someone you know is going through a rough time, please tell them about our ministry. 3 OUTREACH Moment for Missions This month s Moment for Missions is Phoebe Berks Heath Care. Phoebe Berks is a community of Phoebe Ministries, a non-for-profit that holds a rich legacy of caring for older adults. Founded over 110 years ago. The Phoebe name has been synonymous with compassionate, faith-based care for over a century. Phoebe Berks has an outstanding reputation for nursing, clinical, and rehabilitative care. All residents of Phoebe Berks have a priority status for services and admission to skilled nursing, rehabilitation and personal care. Collection for this mission focus will be taken on Sunday, June 3rd, but you can make your contribution anytime this month. For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore, I command you, You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land. Deuteronomy 15:11 As we serve Habitat for Humanity, we ll be taking a team of 5 or 6 to work on renovating a house on Saturday, September 15h. Watch for a blurb in the next month or two. We ve had three great volunteer days with Habitat. Thank you to those who have helped! Good Shepherd Mission The Good Shepherd Mission Foundation is sponsoring a Kauffman Chicken BBQ on Tuesday, June 12th 2-6 PM at Walgreens in Shillington. Cost is $8 for 1/2 chicken, baked potato, applesauce, rolls. We hosted 3 Family Promise families during the week of May 20th. Thank you to EVERYONE who volunteered to make a difference in struggling people s lives fulfilling the Great Commission as we are commanded to do! Family Promise s Annual Fundraiser will be Thursday, October 4th at the Double Tree Hotel. Watch for more information. May s Wilson Area Food Pantry had 110 signed up. Usually the Pantry serves about 100 families including 0ver 400 people from our area. Needs are: all non-perishable foods including, boxed macaroni & cheese, canned tuna, peanut butter, canned fruits, baked beans. Please bring food items to the church on the first two Sundays of the month.

4 Children s Ministry Update! Hello Everyone! Can you believe, it is almost June! Time fly's when you are doing God s work!!! I want to put our a HUGE apology for the Mother s Day Brunch we ran out of food!! Regrouping now for a Father s Day brunch to be held on Father s Day, June 17th in Fellowship Hall 10 11ish a.m. Sign up sheets are at the Welcome Center. I advise you to sign up if you plan to attend. Figh in Phils The DEADLINE for signing up is JUNE 10. It looks like we will be going in July. If you have not yet signed up, think about it. This will be a great day of fellowship, food and fun! A sign up sheet is at the Welcome Center. Parents: School is almost over. With that in mind, I am in need of your input. I would like to start J.A.M. (Jesus And Me) during the summer. I am reaching out because I would like to hear from you as to which day and time would work best for you and your child s schedule. Please me or text me with your thoughts. (dasmatt1914@gmail.com or ) Gentlemen, I am reaching out to you: I am in need of about 20 old t-shirts or button down shirts for the kids as they will be doing some painting projects that will be displayed in our classroom for all to see. 5 YOUTH GROUP NEWS 9:00 am-10:00 am Every Sunday-Youth Bible Study 10:00 am-11:00 am-puppets in the Summer -starting June. (The schedule will be created due to everyone s availability.) If interested contact-jackie Upcoming Events June 17 th -Father s Day Brunch- help out. June 30 th -Community Dinner help out. Planning trip to reward for all the services for the year. (Get calendars back to Jackie for Summer planning.) Jesus Needs Your Help! Our Jesus puppet is falling apart- He needs some sewing and a new neck. If you have sewing skills and would like to helpplease contact Jackie We re almost done cleaning out the children/youth rooms. Starting in June, there will be a table of not needed items in Fellowship Hall. All items are free but if you would like to throw a donation in our basket-that would be great too! All donations will go to children and youth activities. Great job Sydney, Aiden and Christian helping out at The Opportunity House!

6 Mother s Bible Study All mother s are invited to attend this original supplier (The Bible) of parenting studies. Join us in the room off Fellowship Hall by the Choir room on alternate Sunday s. June dates are on the 10th & 24th at 10 a.m. Speak with Alice Heimbach with your questions. Men s Breakfast The men have decided to continue with the Men s Monthly Fellowship Breakfast on the 3rd Saturday of each month through the Summer. The next one will be held June 16th, 8:00 a.m. in the Lounge Area at Giannotti s in Wyomissing. Last month, Bob Melson provided some insight for us on the similar qualities for serving in our county s military and serving as Christians as part of God s Kingdom, pointing out a number of Bible passages as part of our armor as we do battle each day in this world on behalf of Jesus. For the June breakfast, we will have another one of our men lead us in a short devotion after we eat. There is a sign up sheet in the Welcome Center. All men of the church are welcome to attend! Vicki Sproesser Memorial Golf Tournament Friday ~ June 8th Willow Hollow Golf Course (619 Prison Road, Leesport) $70 includes lunch in the pavilion Hole Sponsor $50 call the church at Opportunity House St. John s serves Sunday lunch 4 times a year. People have expressed an interest in helping, but have questions about the procedures. Opportunity House always gives us the number of residents for the week we serve. The easiest meals to prepare are casseroles such as baked zitit, or any kind of pasta. They serve as an easy meal and are well received. We also provide salad & Italian bread. Casseroles are generally brought to church before the 9:00 a.m. worship service & kept warm in the ovens. Some people make soup & sandwiches. The meal is served at the Opportunity House at NOON, so 11-11:15 a.m. is a good time to leave the church. We are only responsible for serving the meal. As soon as everyone is served, (some come back for seconds), you may leave. The residents are responsible for clean up. Please consider helping out. Four or five people are needed to serve. If you don t want to serve, please consider donating toward the meals. The residents are very appreciative. Our next day to serve is AUGUST 5th. Thank you! Questions?
