Now, it is time to prepare for Passover. It is hard to believe that it is right around the corner, starting Friday night, March 30th. Jewish seniors needing rides to services for Passover or a Community Seder can call San Antonio Jewish Senior Services (SAJSS) for transportation. In an effort to fight isolation, SAJSS strives to make sure that no Jewish senior wanting to attend religious services or SAJSS volunteer Rivka Schechter led the first Shabbat service at Franklin Park Sonterra on February 16. Franklin Park Sonterra has joined the rotation of retirement facilities to have Jewish Living Programs and have clergy or volunteers visit to lead Shabbat services. Several of our partner organizations local congregations and the JCC are hosting community Seders for anyone MARCH 2018 Jewish community events is left at home without the means for transportation to these events. 3 PASSOVER PESACH march 30 the 2018 holiday: SUNDOWN SUNDOWN to april 7 PASSOVER IS THE FIRST OF THREE FESTIVALS WITH RELIGIOUS, HISTORICAL, AND AGRICULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (THE OTHER TWO ARE SHAVUOT AND SUKKOT). THE PRIMARY OBSERVANCES OF PASSOVER ARE RELATED TO THE EXODUS FROM EGYPT AFTER MORE THAN 200 YEARS OF SLAVERY. OBSERVANCES The holiday name of Passover, (or Pesach in Hebrew) comes from the final plague death of the first born when G-d passed over the Jewish homes. Passover lasts for eight days (seven days in Israel) and is highlighted by a Seder the first two nights (one in Israel). Seder means order and is marked by 15 steps: Kaddesh (blessing over the wine), Urechatz (washing hands), Karpas (vegetable such as celery, parsley or potato), Yachatz (breaking of the middle matzah), Maggid (the telling of the story of the Exodus), Rachtzah (washing hands with a blessing), Motzi (blessing before eating matzah), Matzah (unleavened bread), Maror (bitter herb), Korekh (sandwich with matzah and maror), Shulchan Orekh (eating the festive meal), Tzafun (eating the afikomen for dessert), Barekh (grace after meals), Hallel (Psalms of praise), Nirtzah (conclusion of the Seder the prayer, Next Year in Jerusalem ). These steps are outlined in the Haggadah, the book used during the Seder that tells the story of the Exodus from Egypt and explains practices and symbols of the holiday. CUSTOMS MATZAH Matzah is unleavened bread, made without yeast or another leavening agent simply from flour and water and cooked very quickly. Jews made this bread for their flight from Egypt. For the 8 days, Jewish homes are free of all leavened grain products (chametz) and related foods. Before Passover, many people transform their kitchens to chametz-free zones. THE FOUR QUESTIONS During a Seder, the youngest person of the family asks a set of questions to encourage participation. It s designed to satisfy the needs of four different types of people: the wise one who wants to know technical details; the wicked one who excludes himself; the simple one who needs to know the basics; and the one who is unable to ask, who doesn t even know enough to know how or what to ask. For questions, call or Mindy Cohen, SAJSS Program Director, at (210) or MindyC@ SAJSS.com. FRED S CORNER By Fred Kanter Sally and I joined about 40 of our fellow members of the Simcha Social Club at Congregation Agudas Achim on February 8. Rabbi Abraham provided an explanation of the Purim story with a reference to Esther. The meal consisted of sliders, french fries, fresh fruit, and Hamantashen. The program was the making of the Hamantashen. Tables were set up and the members went to work prior to eating lunch. The Hamantashen baked while we ate. Since I am not the best baker in the world, I discovered the way to get my fill. Just stand next to the baking sheet with a sad look on your face. Yiddish women cannot stand to see a starving man (I'm only about 40 pounds overweight) so they make extra. We had a ball and I ate lots of goodies. Simcha Social Club is partially funded by a grant from SAJSS. Tomorrow s results are created by today s hopes and dreams. To help San Antonio Jewish Senior Services (SAJSS) continue to grow in the future, please consider SAJSS when making your planned giving decisions. Designating SAJSS as a beneficiary of your estate planning or life insurance policy helps SAJSS to better serve the growing needs of those who follow in your footsteps. Schwartz, from page 1 munity. Like many families, when I was a child, we used a traditional Hagaddah and went around the table for every guest to read a section. The best part was being with family-parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins--and friends. Another favorite was eating homemade gefilte fish, made from fish my grandfather caught at Canyon Lake that was then ground up, mixed with other traditional ingredients, and formed into balls by my grandmother. Today, my family celebrates in a slightly different way. Sadly, we no longer make homemade gefilte fish, but we still sing lots of songs, and all of the kids chant the four questions. The night before the holiday begins, our children enjoy searching for the chometz we missed in the house, setting the Seder table, cooking with us, and preparing surprises for the ten plagues to include ping pong ball hail, plastic jumping frogs, and sunglasses for darkness. Before Seder begins, we engage our guests in discussions about modern-day issues of challenges, slavery, and freedom. Then we give every guest a different Haggadah, each book with its own commentary, encouraging everyone to ask questions, to challenge the text, and to think about our own personal journeys from slavery to freedom. Thankfully, most of us have not endured actual slavery, but many would say that we are enslaved by iphones, computers, materialism, personal obligations, and more. My hope for each of us this Passover is that we spend Seder with others and that we discover new ways to free ourselves from the things that keep us from reaching our full potential and identifying and fulfilling personal missions. May each of us make the most of every day, stay engaged and active, and work together to make our community better and stronger. Chag Sameach!
