5 FACILITATING CONNECTIONS THROUGH HONOR & RESPECT Enrich lives of members of our Jewish community Kavod SA is a grassroots chesed (caring) project that helps to facilitate connections between generations in the San Antonio Jewish community. Commitment to connection Hosts are expected to initiate and meet their partners once every two months for a one hour, face-to-face meeting. Those engagements can take many different shapes. For example, they can take place over a Shabbat meal, over coffee, or at a museum outing. kavod honor & respect YOU RE INVITED We invite you to be a host for members of our community who have expressed an interest in the program and would benefit from the warmth of a friendship. 6 GMJSS IN THE COMMUNITY GMJSS volunteers at TBE Food & Fun Summer Day Camp MEET-UP AT THE MCNAY GMJSS staff members Christina Weinfeld, Lety Vargas and Lauren Sandoval (in yellow shirts from left to right) with co-directors Kathi Kardon and Robyn Rosen and children from the camp. GMJSS staff had a blast volunteering at Temple Beth-El Food & Fun Summer Day Camp, a program that GMJSS helps to fund through a grant, on Tuesday, July 19. This eight-week free Summer Day Camp feeds children who normally get free meals at school and do not have this access during the summer. The camp also provides activities between the meals. Our staff helped children with tennis, make houses out of wooden sticks, and sing songs. For Some Summer Jazz Fun Sunday, August 21 from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. KEN SLAVIN San Antonio s jazz crooner extraordinaire. Enjoy the smooth voice and captivating personality of one of our city s most beloved performers. Preorder a gourmet box lunch by Fresh Horizons Catering and the Jingu House through the McNay website. Please RSVP to us at the GMJSS office at (210) by Friday, August 19. G O L D E N M A N O R JEWISH SENIOR SERVICES NW Military Hwy., Suite. 210 San Antonio, TX (210) info@goldenmanor.net GMJSS STAFF: DANIEL L. LASER, CSA Executive Director DLLaser@GoldenManor.net FRED S CORNER By Fred Kanter LETY P. VARGAS Executive Assistant / Program Coordinator LetyV@GoldenManor.net LAUREN SANDOVAL GMJSS Marketing & Communications Manager LaurenS@GoldenManor.net CHRISTINA WEINFELD Program Director At the July L'Chayim club of Rodfei Sholom, we were fed and serenaded by "campers" who were supervised by interns - Shala Adler, Zlaty Hertz, Sari Shapiro, and Rudi Sukenik. The interns were from various parts of our nation and are wonderful caring young ladies. There were about 25 to 30 present plus the campers and interns. Rabbi Scheinberg blessed the group and provided the D'var Torah that tied this meeting to our religion. Many of the seniors joined in on the songs along with the children and that was especially true of one octogenarian at my table. The meal consisted of hamburgers, coleslaw, and chips followed by cake and fruit. I must add that the children made key chains out of yarn and presented one to each of the seniors present. That act of kindness warmed the hearts of all present. At the Simcha Club of Congregation Agudas Achim. Rabbi Abraham said the blessing and provided the tie to our religion. There were about 50 present. The meal consisted of salisbury steak, salad, noodles and baked apple for dessert. The program had the entire group enthralled. Dr. Chad Spigel of the Trinity University Department of Religion discussed much of the information obtained from an archeological dig in Israel. Much of this discussion was centered around the role of the synagogue in early Jewish communities. He was able to highlight many discoveries that revealed the changing practices over the centuries. The questions flew and he responded during the meeting and remained afterward answering additional questions. L'Chayim Club and Simcha Social Club are funded by a grant from GMJSS.
