The Seder (pronounced say-der ) is the traditional Passover meal that is eaten by Jews today to celebrate Passover. There are many traditions to the meal that differ from family to family. Passover has great significance for Christians as well. It is the event that points most to the sacrifice of Jesus. The Gospel accounts tell us that the Passover is the last meal Jesus ate with his disciples before his death. It was here that he began the Christian tradition known as the Lord s Supper. Through this ceremony the believer can see a clear picture of how Jesus came to complete the plan that began in the Old Testament. To help students understand the connection between the Passover and the Lord s Supper, the 8th grade Bible classes will share in a Seder meal together. In addition to the tasks below each students is asked to bring in $1 to help cover the costs of supplies for the Passover. To help students be able to: 1. Describe the elements of the Passover feast and their meaning to the Jewish nation. 2. Draw parallels between the Passover and the Lord s Supper. 3. Explain how the principals of Passover relate to New Testament Christianity. 4. Share in the experience of the Seder meal with classmates. You will be assigned two tasks for this project. One is an individual task the other you will do with a partner. These are listed below. Detailed explanations for each project are on the following pages. 1. Individual Task - Passover Research You will look up several Passover websites and answer a set of questions. 2. Tasks with a Partner - two options: a. Haggadah You and a partner will make your own Haggadah. This is the book from which the Passover ceremony is read. b. Passover Food You and a partner will make a traditional food for the Seder meal we will eat together.

2 Task #1 - Passover Research - This is an individual project to be completed by each student. Directions: 1. Look at the websites below to find out the answers to the following questions. 2. Type out the questions and answers. 3. Type your name and class # at the top of your paper. 4. Turn your paper in on Tuesday, March 30. Websites: Questions: 1. 4 Task #2 Option A Haggadah (to be done with a partner) Explanation: The Haggadah is the book from which the Passover ceremony is read. All Haggadahs have the same basic information, however, each one is unique and personal to the author. You and your partner will create your own personal Haggadah based upon others. You will not want to include all the information you find. Your goal is to edit the information you find and pick what you feel is most important to include in your version. Directions: 1. Do research to find information on the Haggadah. You must use at least three sources. The sites below may be used. You could also find hard copies at the public library or in Mr. Connel s room. 2. Make your own Haggadah that includes each of the sections on the back of this sheet. Each section should include: a. Title for the section b. Script for what is to be said c. Any instructions needed for that part of the ceremony d. Colorful designs and illustrations. 3. All written information for your Haggadah must be typed. You may use different fonts and colors for titles and scripts but you must follow a consistent pattern. 4. Pictures and illustrations should be neat and colorful and should fit the theme for each section. They may be hand drawn or computer generated. 5. Type a list of the sources you used and include this at the end. Remember you must use at least three sources. 6. Make a colorful cover for your book with the Title A Passover Haggadah and include the typed names (first and last) of each person in the group. 7. Your Haggadah should open from right to left (backwards from a normal book). This is traditional for Passover books because Hebrew is written from right to left. 8. Be as creative as you can be and remember neatness counts! Here are some helpful Haggadah sites:

5 Task #2 Option B Food for the Seder (to be done with a partner) Explanation: There are many traditional foods for the Passover meal. Some have special significance to the ceremony, others are just for the enjoyment of the meal. You and your partner will be assigned a traditional food to make for the Seder. All food must be made from traditional Seder recipes that can be found in cook books, on the internet or from friends who may celebrate Passover. Directions: 1. Once assigned the food you will prepare, you and your partner will do research to find a recipe. You may find recipes from the following sources. a. Passover Cookbooks b. Internet sites c. Friends who celebrate Passover 2. Type a report on your food and include the following information: a. Name of your Passover dish. b. Complete recipe including ingredients and cooking instructions c. Source where you got the recipe d. 200 word essay on the traditional foods of Passover e. Both partners names and class period in the top right corner 3. Prepare your food according to the recipe and bring it to class on the due date. 4. Important notes: a. It is best to bring your food in disposable dishes if possible so there is less to clean, and less to remember to bring home. b. If your item needs to be cut into portions to serve, please do this before you bring it to class. Food Items: 1. Small lamb roast 2-3 pounds.
