4 GMJSS IN THE COMMUNITY Top Row, (l to r): Anna Rado, Arlene Dryer, Bobi Stern, Beth Keough, Betty Adler, Danny Markson Middle Row, (l to r): Geri Gregory, Howard Feinberg, Howie Nestel, Lynn Stahl, Marcia Weser, Roger Adler Bottom Row, (l to r): Reesa Pullen, Rene Wender, Mel Waldgeir, Sandy Katz, Steven Gross, Billy Samelson A Living Legacy: Experience 18 moving and insightful interviews from our local Jewish community that reflect on aging and faith 18. Chai. Life. L Chayim. Jews often give gifts and donations in multiples of 18, which is called giving chai. 18 volunteers, Anna Rado, Arlene Dryer, Bobi Stern, Betty Adler, Danny Markson, Geri Gregory, Howard Feinberg, Howie Nestel, Lynn Stahl, Marcia Weser, Roger Adler, Reesa Pullen, Rene Wender, Mel Waldgeir, Sandy Katz, Steven Gross and Billy Samelson, were selected to be interviewed as part of mmlearn.org s A Living Legacy video series, sponsored by Golden Manor Jewish Senior Services. These 18 local community leaders shared extremely personal, moving and insightful wisdom. The interviews, conducted by Maria Wellisch, RN, LNFA-Vice President of Corporate Training at mmlearn.org were created as a web-based program of the Elizabeth McGown Training Institute to provide quality, consistent caregiver training to anyone seeking practical ways to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of older adults in their care. The overall purpose of the Living Legacy Project is to provide insight into some certain truths as we begin to age and reflect on our faith. The series will also serve as an effective vehicle to share those insights with a new generation while leaving a legacy. None of the interviews were scripted nor were none of the interviewees pre-screened. What you see and hear is raw and from the heart. Many thanks to these volunteers for providing an extraordinary legacy for this and future generations. Click on mmlearn.org/index. php/all-faqs/legacy.html to view. Indeed, we are quite lucky to have them as part of our community and honoring us with the gift of their time and wisdom. L Chayim! PARKER from page 1 your questions. Robert W. Parker, M.D. is a Clinical Professor and former Chief of Community Geriatrics and Vice Chair for Clinical Services in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. He joined the faculty of the UT Health Science Center in 2000 after 20 years in private practice. He is board certified in Geriatrics and his primary interest is developing improved models of healthcare delivery for frail elders. During his tenure leading the Geriatrics Division, his team has developed a thriving continuity practice for elders, as well as an ACE (Acute Care for the Elderly) unit at Christus Santa Rosa Medical Center hospital. The ACE unit is an inpatient unit designed specifically to prevent the complications of hospitalization to which elders are prone. The unit has successfully and substantially reduced patient falls, adverse drug events, delirium, hospital length of stay and readmissions. The Geriatrics division has created a continuity model of care so that patients are followed by the same healthcare team wherever they may be. This model has reduced many of the complications occurring when transitioning patients from hospital to home or to other sites. Space is limited to 35 people. To RSVP or for questions, contact Christina Weinfeld, (210) or cweinfeld@goldenmanor.net.

FRED S CORNER By Fred Kanter The Simcha Social Club of Agudas Achim took place June 9. Rabbi Jeffrey Abraham led the group in the blessing and provided the tie to our religion. There were about 20 present and considering the subject, they were quite active. The meal consisted of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and salad along with dessert. David Present then introduced the 4 first responders from the San Antonio Fire Department alerting us to a myriad of Senior Fire Safety Topics. Fireman Jim Allerkamp led the discussion and he was assisted by Firemen Kamp, Hernandez, and HIll. The first part of the discussion was centered around medical emergencies. Mr. Allerkamp said that all San Antonio firemen were trained as EMTs and that we should not be surprised to see a big fire truck responding to a medical emergency since there were a lot more available trucks than ambulances. He and the other firemen demonstrated GMJSS MEET-UP AT THE MCNAY 12:30 P.M. - 3 P.M. LEEPER AUDITORIUM To RSVP for this event or for transportation, contact Christina Weinfeld at (210) or cweinfeld@ goldenmanor.net. some of the equipment that is carried on all trucks to treat those in distress. The second part of the discussion related to fire prevention and they were most emphatic about having working smoke and carbon dioxide detectors. They also stressed having a predetermined meeting location in case of a fire requiring evacuation. They cited instances of individuals who had gotten out but then died when returning to look for loved ones who had already escaped via another route. These first responders should be lauded for their dedication to saving lives and protecting our community while risking their own safety. Sunshine Club and Simcha Social Club are funded by a grant from GMJSS.
