4 PURIM The Feast of Lots Brought to you by G O L D E N M A N O R JEWISH SENIOR SERVICES Enriching the Lives of Baby Boomers and Beyond Purim 2016 begins on the evening of Wednesday, March 23 and ends in the evening of Thursday, March 24 Often called the Jewish Carnival or The Feast of Lots, Purim is a joyous holiday that reflects on the saving of Jews from a threatened massacre during the Persian period ( BCE). The holiday celebrates The Story of Esther - a story that is one of the most beloved in the Jewish community. Observances: The holiday is often celebrated with letting loose and having fun along with focusing on four special mitzvot (good deeds). Four Mitzvahs of Purim: 1. Hear the Megillah: Head to your synagogue to hear the whole megillah, a.k.a. The Book of Esther, which is the scroll that tells the Purim story. Esther s heroism plays the leading role in saving her Jewish people. 2. Give to the Needy: A primary theme of Purim is Jewish unity. Haman, the Persian king s prime minister, plotted to exterminate all of the Jews in Persia. Since all Jews were all in danger together, Jews celebrate together, too. So on Purim day, special emphasis is placed on caring for the less fortunate. 3. Send Food Gifts to Friends (Mishloach Manot): On Purim, we emphasize the importance of friendship and community by sending gifts of food to friends. Many times these baskets or boxes include hamantaschen, a Purim favorite. 4. Feast! On Purim day, gather family, maybe a guest or two, and celebrate with a festive Purim meal. * Traditions and views often differ from family to family. Source: MyJewishLearning.com and Chabad.org CUSTOMS Hamantaschen Hamantaschen are made in a variety of flavors, including apricot, cherry, strawberry, chocolate, poppyseed and more. Costumes While it is traditional to masquerade as characters from The Story of Esther, many Jewish families celebrate Purim as an alternative to Halloween, with children dressing in nontraditional costumes and masks. There is no right or wrong costume for Purim.

6 IN THE KNOW News you can use Phony IRS Threatens Fines Watch out for phone calls from scam artists by Ron Burley, AARP The Magazine, December 2015/January 2016 An alert AARP member recently got a call from an IRS agent and right away sensed something was phony. The agent left a voice mail message saying back taxes were owed and told the man to call back right away. The AARP member contacted me instead, and I returned the call, posing as him. The supposed IRS agent told me that my only hope to avoid jail was to pay fines and back taxes before the police came knocking at my door. He also said there might be a way I could stay out of the slammer but only if I acted quickly. For the next 10 minutes, he alternated between threats of pending arrest and hopes for salvation. Finally, he directed me to a local market where I could purchase several thousand dollars worth of Green Dot MoneyPaks a way to transfer cash to another person instantly by just giving him or her a secret code number. Having received my instructions, I promised to call back when I d completed my mission. I didn t, of course, because I knew right away this was a scam. The Federal Trade Commission reports that, from 2013 to 2014, complaints about the IRS Scam increased 20-fold, with more than 54,000 Americans being targeted in Fraudsters often target immigrants or older Americans less likely to have the knowledge or support system that would keep them from falling into the trap. As in my case, after stoking the fires of fear, the bogus agent turns helpful, providing a solution that involves sending cash in a quick and untraceable way. Unfortunately, IRS scammers often thwart tracking efforts by operating from overseas, using relayed calls and by showing bogus caller IDs. The display on my phone had actually read IRS GOV. Of course, most of us wouldn t fall for a foreign scammer s heavily accented delivery and unlikely story, but some always do. And the Look who recently turned 65! FEB. 14 TERRY GROSS Terry Gross is the host and co-executive producer of Fresh Air, an interview format radio show produced by WHYY-FM in Philadelphia and distributed throughout the United States by NPR. Since 1975 she has conducted thousands of interviews. Gross began her radio career in 1973 at WBFO, a public radio station in Buffalo, N.Y., where she started out as a volunteer. When she moved to WHYY-FM, Fresh Air was a local interview program. In 1985, Fresh Air with Terry Gross went national, being distributed weekly by NPR, and two years later became a daily program. The show reaches an audience of millions of daily listeners. The San Francisco Chronicle wrote that Gross' interviews are "a remarkable blend prospect of pending arrest might rattle even the coolest of us. Scammers often bolt at the first sign of discovery: When I called my scammer back and identified myself as a journalist, he gave me a terse response and hung up. HERE S WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU RECEIVE SUCH A CALL: Assume it s a scam. The IRS doesn t call people about back taxes; it ll send you a notice by mail. If you think you might actually have unpaid taxes, call the IRS at Hang up the phone. Do not engage the caller in any way. Any information you provide may just mark you for more bogus calls. Report the incident. If you are contacted by phone, report the incident to the U.S. Treasury inspector general for tax administration at If contacted by , forward the message directly to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov. Educate others. Talk to the vulnerable people in your life about the scam. of empathy, warmth, genuine curiosity and sharp intelligence." She prides herself on preparation; prior to interviewing guests, she reads their books, watches their movies and/ or listens to their CDs. The Boston Phoenix opined that "Terry Gross... is almost certainly the best cultural interviewer in America, and one of the best all-around interviewers, period. Her smart, thoughtful questioning pushes her guests in unlikely directions. Her interviews are revelatory in a way other people's seldom are." Some of her interviews have not gone smoothly. Gross asked Nancy Reagan about the lack of funding and mishandling of HIV/ AIDS by her husband, President Ronald Reagan, which was not well received. At least a few interview subjects have exited their interviews early, including Lou Reed, Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner, Faye Dunaway and Monica Lewinsky. 8 GMJSS IN THE COMMUNITY Join us and Councilman Nirenberg for a Walk in the Park Join us for some social exercise at 8:30 a.m. at the Blanco entrance of Hardberger Park on Sunday, March 20 as Golden Manor Jewish Senior Services continues our Walk in the Park program with special guest, Councilman Ron Nirenberg. Councilman Nirenberg was first elected to San Antonio's District 8 City Council in 2013 and was reelected in The walking route varies within Hardberger Park depending on conditions. If the ground is wet or muddy, the group walks the paved paths. The basic group walk happens each Sunday, is about 30 minutes (length varies) but if anyone wants to add another minutes then several members of the group continue together. Family and friends of all ages and their dogs are welcome to join the group, and water is provided to all who need it. If you would like to join the list to receive updates and invites to the weekly walk please contact group leader Warren Lieberman directly wglieb60@gmail.com at or call the GMJSS office at (210) FRED S CORNER By Fred Kanter We attended the Simcha Social Club at Congregation Agudas Achim. There were approximately 40 present and we enjoyed a meal of vegetable soup, salad, baked potatoes with all the fixin's, and cookies. Courtney and Steve Silver gave a presentation on senior living options. They gave a comparison of the situations requiring assisted living as opposed to independent living. There was also a discussion about downsizing of living quarters. This included the disposal of many items that had been collected over years. Those items On February 23, Sally and I went to the Sunshine Club meeting or should I say Levi's Comedy Club? Rabbi Levi Teldon was there to provide the tie to our religion and acted as guest speaker. There were about 30 present and we were served a wonderful meal of matzah ball soup, baked chicken, mashed potatoes, kugel, and carrots. Dessert was a lemon cake with strawberry sauce topping and a surprise birthday cake for Mr. Eli Guggenheim who is having his 92d birthday. Rochel Teldon not only made a wonderful lunch, she put your humble writer to work in the kitchen. The program was a review of the words could be sold or donated to charity. If one decided to sell, considerations were discussed about return on investment in "sprucing up" the place. The center pieces on the tables were extremely attractive and would like to make note of that. and phrases of Yiddish. Rabbi Teldon made it sound more like a presentation of a stand up comic and we all loved it. It brought back many memories. Many of use grew up in New York, Chicago, or other cities where it is a common language. It was a happy time with all participating. Simcha Club and Sunshine Club are funded by a grant from GMJSS.
