4 GMJSS IN THE COMMUNITY FRED S CORNER By Fred Kanter At the Temple Beth- El Shabbat Havurah in August, Cantor Julie Berlin represented the clergy and was kind enough to help on the serving line. There were approximately present and the meal consisted of fajitas, salad, rice, and beans. A delicious flan was served for dessert. The program was a talk about Personal Security presented by Willie Ng, the Chief Criminal Investigator for the District Attorney's office and Officer Jeremy Brosh of the San Antonio Police Department. While their presentation was shortened because of time restraints, they definitely covered the needs and concerns of our group. Naturally, the presentation was oriented toward a senior's perspective and they covered the dos and dont's that will help the individual senior stay safe with the conditions that currently exist. They covered many of the "scams" that target seniors both at the door and through phone or internet. They covered home protection including the use of lighting and managing landscaping that could provide cover for any criminal element. They stressed that many criminals seek access through the garage and one must secure and lock the door to the garage. They stressed the need to verify the ID of anyone seeking access and protecting your personal identification. The question and answer session indicated the extreme interest by our members. This is a great service provided by our law enforcement professionals. Shabbat Lunch Havurah and Sunshine Club are funded by a grant from GMJSS. Sally and I visited the Chabad Center for Jewish Learning along with 25 to 30 of our fellow seniors. The lunch consisted of chicken fingers, salad, coleslaw, and hummus. Cookies and blueberries were served for dessert. Rabbi Teldon provided the tie to our religion and sometimes I feel that he should be doing standup in the Catskills. It is a real treat to have a Rabbi who can tell a joke. Many times during the lunch we were "invaded" by the campers who really keep the staff busy. The program was a talk by Dr. Elizabeth Glazier on "Talking with your Doctor." Dr. Glazier is a Geriatric Medicine Specialist with extensive experience in dealing with the problems encountered by seniors. Needless to say, we were all ears. She stressed the need to organize your questions in writing before visiting with your doctor. Those questions should be in order of importance so that one's real concerns are resolved. One's medicines should be brought with or at least a list showing the dosage. She also stressed the need for a Medical Directive and a Medical Power of Attorney naming someone to see that your desires are met. She knows her stuff and loves her work with seniors. IN THE KNOW The Best Way to Delay Dementia Without Drugs By Alice Park, TIME Magazine A new study provides the strongest evidence yet for the power of brain training to reduce the risk of dementia and possibly Alzheimer s There has been a lot of talk lately about the role that brain training can play in lowering the risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer s disease. Studies have looked at factors like education, social engagement, and the amount of new learning that older people do as possible things that may help. But the variety of different ways that people studied this cognitive stimulation has left more questions than answers. Now, in the most rigorous study to date, researchers compared different types of cognitive training head to head and report that a speed-processingbased training can indeed lower rates of cognitive decline and dementia. The researchers were led by Jerri Edwards, from the University of South Florida, and the results were presented at the Alzheimer s Association annual meeting on Sunday. Article: The study involved nearly 3,000 healthy older people who were randomly assigned to take a five week classroom-based training that involved either improving their processing speed, improving their memory skills, or improving their reasoning skills, and followed over 10 years. The purpose of the computer-based training was to help people take in and process information on the screen faster. The researchers manipulated how much time the people had to process the material.
