4 The Temple Educational Program Our children are Judaism's most important resource, and our hopes and dreams for our Jewish future. We, at The Temple, are dedicated to building a warm, comfortable and positive climate of Jewish experiences and learning for our students. Parents are the necessary ingredient to make our efforts successful. Please join us in this endeavor! The goal of Jewish education, here at The Temple, is the deepening of Jewish experiences and knowledge in order to strengthen faith in God, love of Torah, and the identification with the Jewish people through involvement at The Temple and participation in Jewish life. We believe that Judaism contains answers to the challenges and questions confronting us daily, and that only a knowledgeable Jew can successfully discover these answers. Linked to these goals, the U.R.J. curriculum programs embrace experiences and learning activities encouraging children, youth, and adults to become: 1. Jews who affirm their Jewish identity and bind themselves inseparably to their people by word and deed. 2. Jews who bear witness to the brit (Covenant between God and the Jewish people) by embracing Torah through the study and observance of Mitzvot (Commandments) as interpreted in the light of historic development and contemporary thought. 3. Jews who affirm their historical bond with Eretz Yisrael, the State of Israel. 4. Jews who cherish and study Hebrew, the language of the Jewish people. 5. Jews who value and practice T fila (Prayer). Goals 6. Jews who further the causes of justice, freedom, and peace by pursuing tzedek (righteousness), mishpat (justice), and chesed (loving deeds). 7. Jews who celebrate Shabbat and the festivals, and observe the Jewish ceremonies marking the significant occasions in their lives. 8. Jews who have esteem for themselves and others; their own family and the family of others; and their own community and the community of others. 9. Jews who express their kinship with K lal Yisrael by actively seeking the welfare of Jews throughout the world. 10. Jews who support and participate in Temple life. Such Jews will strengthen the fabric of Jewish life, ensure the future of Judaism and the Jewish people and approach the realization of their divine potential. 4

5 Standards & Requirements for The Temple Educational Program The Temple school program maintains educational standards and requirements to assure the high quality of learning we all want for our children. TIME: Nursery - 10 th Grade Sundays 9:30-11:30 A.M. 4 th /5 th Hebrew Tuesdays 4:15-5:15 P.M. 6 th /7 th Hebrew Wednesdays 4:15-5:15 P.M. IT IS VITAL THAT ALL STUDENTS ARRIVE AT RELIGIOUS SCHOOL ON TIME! ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS: When a student is absent or excused (for whatever reason), make-up work will be expected in accordance with the requirements of the teacher and the administration. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain the required make-up work from the teacher. By unanimous approval of the Religious School Committee on August 21, 1975, the following policy regarding extended and/or frequent absences from classes was adopted. Grade 10 Grade 9 Grade 8 Grades N - 7 Attendance is monitored and requirements are determined by the Senior Rabbi. A maximum of six (6) absences during the school year for weekend classes. After six (6) absences, additional make-up assignments will be required for each absence before the student can be promoted to the Confirmation Class the following year. A maximum of five (5) absences during the school year for weekend classes. After five (5) absences, additional make-up assignments will be required for each absence before the student can be promoted to the next grade the following year. A maximum of ten (10) absences (which includes mid-week Hebrew), at which time a special assignment may need to be completed before promotion can take place. 5

6 TZEDAKAH: In addition to attendance, each student is expected to bring Tzedakah money and non-perishable food for the Second Harvest Food Bank. The righteous act of Tzedakah is part of our Jewish responsibility and our privilege. SHABBAT SERVICE ATTENDANCE: Students in grades six (6) through ten (10) are expected to attend Shabbat Services as part of their Religious School educational program. The Religious School Committee adopted the following policy in 1990: Grades 6, 7, 8, 9, & Services Students will be expected to sign the "sign-in sheet" each time they attend services. "Sign-in" information can be found in front of the Sanctuary. STUDENT EVALUATIONS: Students in grades Kindergarten through third (3) will be evaluated by their Religious School teachers twice yearly. Hebrew School students in grades four (4) through seven (7) will be evaluated twice during the school year at the close of each semester by their Hebrew instructor and their Judaic Studies teacher. Students in grades eight (8), and nine (9) will be evaluated by their instructors through written comment. Grade ten (10) does not receive evaluations. These evaluations will be mailed home for the parents information. They reflect the progress of the individual student. In no way does the evaluation reflect the student s ability as compared with his or her peers. DRESS CODE: Nursery - Fourth Fifth - Tenth Comfortable yet "Temple-like" clothing is appropriate. (Please consider that students will be participating in arts and crafts projects and cooking activities at times.) Read your lesson plans to avoid clothing being damaged. Appropriate Temple attire is required, which includes suitable pants* and shirts for the boys, and dresses, skirts or suitable pants and shirts* for the girls. *To make this policy more specific, the Religious School Committee has stipulated that "suitable" means: No torn or patched jeans No short shorts No tee shirts without collars, halter tops, rubber thongs 6

Parents are invited to PARK THEIR CARS and escort their child/ren into the building up stairs. 3. 8 EARLY DISMISSAL: If you need to pick up your child before our regular dismissal time, you must go to the front office. The receptionist will contact your child's teacher. No student will be allowed to leave class on their own. BEHAVIOR CODE: Appropriate behavior and conduct is expected at all times at The Temple. If for any reason a student has difficulty with his or her behavior, the following procedure will be implemented. First: Second: Next: The teacher will remind the student about appropriate behavior. SUNDAY EMERGENCY/SNOW INFORMATION: The Religious School has contacted the following T.V. stations concerning cancellation of classes due to an emergency or inclement weather: T.V. Channels 2, 4 & 5 Snow Reports Additionally, the websites for these stations are continuously updated and extremely accurate. Channel 2: Channel 4: Channel 5: Our Senior Rabbi and Educational Director will use these stations to announce any cancellations as early as possible. In addition, a faculty phone tree is in place which will allow every family to be called. s will also be sent. We will make every effort to call out-of-town families as early as possible when classes are cancelled. MID-WEEK HEBREW EMERGENCY/SNOW INFORMATION: Please call The Temple if you have any questions as to whether or not Hebrew classes will be in session. We will make every effort to our Hebrew School families as soon as possible, should classes need to be cancelled for any reason. 8

10 General Subject Matter HOLIDAY CELEBRATION Our Religious School celebrates the Jewish holidays which occur throughout the year with the entire Congregation through special Congregational and Family Programs. Within each grade level curriculum, the lessons of each Holiday are provided. PRAYERS Each student will learn the basic prayers used for Shabbat, in holiday celebrations, and in life cycle events. ASSEMBLIES Grades Nursery through 3 rd will have an Assembly every Sunday with the Educational Director and Music Teacher. The purpose of this weekly gathering is to establish a sense of community among our students and to foster relationships between our students and our staff. The assembly will begin at 9:30 A.M. All students are to report to assembly on time each Sunday morning. The assembly will consist of a mini prayer service including music, basic prayers, and a story centering on lessons from the Torah, holidays, life cycles, and God. MUSIC The Sunday music curriculum for grades N-4 th consists of songs centered around each grade level's curriculum. The Cantor will supervise this program. A Junior Choir from grades 1 st and up, overseen by the Cantor and directed by our music teacher, will rehearse each Sunday and perform at family services and special holiday celebrations. ART The Sunday art program consists of arts and crafts which follow the individual grade curriculum. At specific times during the school year our Art Specialist will come to the individual rooms to facilitate special projects. The Temple Religious School Family Involvement Programs The Temple has established strong Family Involvement Educational Programs. This year we will offer individual Grade-Level Family Participation Programs that include: The P.A.G.E. (Parents Are Good Examples) Program for Nursery families. The S.T.A.R.(Sitting Together And Reading) Program for Kindergarten families. The J.E.T. (Jewish Experiences Together) Program for 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd & 5 th Planned Parenthood Workshops Grade families. Program for 4 th Grade Parents. Bar/Bat Mitzvah Workshops Program for 6 th Grade Students and Parents. 10

14 Primary Department Pre-Kindergarten THEME: "Parents Are Good Examples" as each student discovers "Myself - My Family - My Home - My Shabbat" GOALS: To make the child aware of himself or herself as a Jewish person and as part of a Jewish family. To introduce each child to Judaism through the study of the family and The Temple with emphasis placed on songs, prayers, symbols and observance. PARENT INVOLVEMENT: Our P.A.G.E. (Parents Are Good Examples) Program will meet on: October 6th November 17th January 12th February 23rd April 20th May 18th (Pamphlets with the details about this program are sent to eligible families.) Parents must make a commitment to attend Religious School with their child on six (6) different occasions during the school year in order to enroll in this unique program. Kindergarten THEME: Jewish Holidays and Holiday Symbols GOALS: To provide the child with an exposure to each holiday, the specific symbols used for that holiday, and the way in which the holiday is observed. The child begins the study of early prophets and writings, which is the 2 nd & 3 rd sections of our Hebrew Bible and explores how the ethical lessons apply to his or her everyday life. 18 General Hebrew School Goals THE TEMPLE HEBREW SCHOOL AIMS TO IMPART TO EACH STUDENT: Familiarity with reading and writing the Hebrew language for the purpose of reading and understanding our Prayerbook and participating in worship services. Familiarity with functional Hebrew words and expressions utilized in the home and in The Temple. Familiarity with important prayers and customs associated with the home, Temple, festivals, and holidays, including the background and significance of those prayers and customs as they apply to our everyday lives. Concern for the importance of Hebrew as part of Jewish life in America. Appreciation of the special importance of the Hebrew language in Jewish life and thought. A positive attitude toward Jewish study and observance, a greater valuing of personal Jewish identity, and a strengthening sense of identity with the Jewish Community. Educational Objectives We encourage each student to reach his or her highest potential of proficiency in the Hebrew language. This includes: The ability to read liturgical Hebrew. The ability to write the Hebrew language. The ability to understand the meaning of individual prayers through knowledge of vocabulary and of general concepts reflected in the prayers. The ability to recognize the structure and basic elements within any Jewish Prayer Service. 18

19 Hebrew Class Descriptions Any Child in our Religious School is welcomed and encouraged to take Hebrew, whether or not he or she is becoming Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Grades One & Two GOALS: TIME: Students will be exposed to Hebrew letters and simple words. This will be an oral experience. Sundays only Grade Three GOALS: TIME: To provide each child with his or her first exposure to the Hebrew language through the introduction of each Hebrew letter and the sound of that letter, along with the introduction of basic Hebrew words. This introduction is a visual and oral experience. Sundays only Grade Four GOALS: TEXT: TIME: Students will learn to read and print the Hebrew alphabet with the vowels. Along with the reading skills, the student is introduced to basic Hebrew grammar (i.e. gender and number), along with the acquisition of a basic Hebrew vocabulary. Sundays during Religious School hours Grade Six GOALS: Students continue their studies learning advanced prayers used in the home and The Temple. Sundays during Religious School hours GOALS: This year represents the highest level of Hebrew achievement in our school. The students go through the entire service, learning to read each prayer, to recognize selected vocabulary and to understand the meaning of each prayer along with its place within the structure of the Jewish worship service. 22 Grade Five THEME: Jewish Ethics, Comparative Judaism and Israel GOALS: To discuss Jewish ethics as they relate to the child s everyday experiences and through Jewish sources. To provide each student with an understanding of the different segments of Jewish beliefs, and to provide each child with a knowledge of Israel; its creation, history, lifestyle and people. 23 Grade Seven THEME: GOALS: Portions of the Week, Anti-Semitism and Holocaust To provide each student with a clear view of the Torah by looking at the different weekly portions as presented by the students themselves; To provide an awareness and a more expanded Jewish perspective through the study of how anti-semitism began and what it can lead to, both locally and worldwide; and To provide an overview of the events of the Holocaust using the backdrop of the history of anti-semitism. Grade Eight THEME: GOALS: Jewish Ethics and Values To explore with our students the challenging moral and ethical decisions they must make continually as Reform Jews today. Emphasis will be placed on medical, legal, sexual and personal ethics. 26 CONFIRMATION CURRICULUM OVERVIEW THEME: GOALS: Jewish Identity, Reform Jewish Theology and Making the Torah Relevant Students will develop a relationship with each other and with the senior staff of The Temple through meeting together each Sunday morning designated on the Sunday schedule. In addition, students will have the opportunity to meet with the Senior Rabbi outside of the designated Sunday classes twice during the year. Students will develop an understanding and gain specific knowledge in three areas: (1) Why God chose Moses, (2) The Book of Ruth and (3) Reform Jewish Theology and History. Joining the above will be an appreciation of literature and a survey of Jewish history. The Confirmands will be prepared to discuss the fundamentals of Judaism and its cultural and spiritual values. 27 Shofar Post Confirmation Program THEME: GOALS: Current Social Issues and Their Jewish Sources To create an awareness of current social issues and link them to our Jewish sources. This special program encourages all 11 th & 12 th graders, following their Confirmation, to continue their Jewish studies. Classes are informal. Students will enjoy dinner, along with discussions of current event issues and how our texts connect to those issues. Those students that complete this two (2) year program will be given their own Shofar during a special Friday evening Shabbat Service and will be eligible to receive a scholarship towards a trip to Israel provided by the Estelle S. Small Post Confirmation Enrichment Fund & The Kuhn Fund. TIME: Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:00 P.M. beginning September 25, 2013 PLACE: Meeting Rooms (dinner will be served) POST-CONFIRMATION GRADUATION: Friday, April 25th, 2014 Service at 6:00 PM, Dinner at 7:30 PM 27
