25 Year ince Lama Yehe' Paing: Intimate Reflection on the Early Day of FPMT 2009 mark the 25th year of Lama Yehe paing. A the FPMT celebrate the life and time of thi great mater, we thought it very appropriate to introduce Lama Yehe, the founding father of FPMT, root guru to our beloved guru and without whoe viion, the FPMT mandala and LDC would not have exited today. ama Yehe wa born cloe to Lhaa in 1935 in Tibet. Clearly a pecial child, he wa oon recognized a the incarnation of great Lyogini, Ache Jampa, the learned abbe of Rakor Gompa, a popular pilgrimage pot and home to about hundred nun of the Gelug tradition. A a young boy, Lama Yehe pent many day at the nunnery attending variou ceremonie and from an early age, Lama had expreed hi deire to lead a religiou life. When he wa 6 year old, he joined Sera Je and wa ordained at the age of 8 and received piritual intruction from Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, then Junior Tutor to HH Dalai Lama. Song Rinpoche, Dragi Dorje Chang Rinpoche, Lhatzun Rinpoche and many prominent great guru and lineage mater. Thi phae of hi education ended in 1959 when a Lama Yehe put it, The Chinee kindly told u that it wa time to leave Tibet and meet the outide world. Ecaping through Bhutan, he ended up in the Tibetan ettlement camp in Buxa Duar. It wa here in Buxa in 1962 that Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche meet Lama Yehe. Thi pecial guru-diciple relationhip would grow between thee two lama and play a great role in fulfilling the prophecy of the 8th century Tibetan mater, Guru Padmaambhava who aid that when iron bird fly (airplane) and hore run on wheel (car), Tibetan people will be cattered like ant acro the face of earth and the Dharma will come to the land of the redkin. 4 2 5 y e a r i n c Lama Yehe Photo ourced from Lama Yehe ucce with the early Wetern tudent wa due, in part to hi keen undertanding of the enitive, trong tendencie of the Wetern mind and the uper amaric Wetern world. He taught that the eence of i a univeral teaching of non duality that truck a chord with young weterner coming of age in the 60, grappling with the realitie of the US-Vietnam war and ocial dichord navigating in a world of tranition. Lama Yehe himelf explain how he began teaching the Dharma to the Weterner, in thi ummarized excerpt taken from the recent iue of Mandala magazine e L a m a Ye h e ' I began teaching Weterner in the late At that time I wa baed at the Tibetan refugee camp of Buxa Duar, Wet Bengal, India where I had lived, following the Chinee invaion of Tibet. Lama Zopa wa one of my tudent there and from hi time in Tibet, had a connection with monk of Samten Choling Monatery at Ghoom, near Darjeeling. They invited u to go there for a holiday, which wa the firt one I d had ince arriving at the Buxa Duar concentration camp. P a i n g So there we were, and one morning, a monk knocked at out door and aid, Lama Zopa friend ha come to ee him It wa Zina Rachevky, a Ruian American woman, who wa uppoed to be a prince or omething. She aid that he d come to the Eat eeking peace and liberation and aked me how they could be found. I wa kind of hocked becaue I d never expected Weterner to be intereted in liberation or enlightenment. For me, that wa a firt. I thought, Thi i omething trange but very pecial. Of coure I did have ome idea of what Weterner were, but obviouly it wa a Tibetan projection! So, depite my urprie, I thought I hould check to ee if he wa incere or not. I tarted to anwer her quetion a bet I could, according to my ability, but after an hour, he aid he had to go back to where he wa taying in Darjeeling, about 30 minute away by jeep. However, a he wa leaving, he aked, Can I come back tomorrow? I aid, All right. Zina Rachevky at Kopan Retreat circa 1971 Photo ourced from In fact that wa the beginning of many requet that Zina requeted of Lama Yehe and oon he invited both lama to tay with her in a eparate cottage cloe to her own o he could continuouly receive Dharma teaching. Over time, Zina decided he wanted to be a nun and wa ordained by Lati Rinpoche at what i now Tuhita Meditation Centre. However, when Zina had to leave India, he continued to maintain contact and an arrangement wa made to meet in Nepal a Lama felt it ha the mot conducive environment to help her adjut to life a a nun. After awhile, her friend joined her and the firt Kopan coure wa given by Lama Zopa Rinpoche in March With each ubequent coure, the number of participant grew and tabilize to around 200 per coure. Eventually, both lama were traveling extenively in 1975 abroad to give teaching. A a reult, 4 new center were created, bringing to the total of 12 then and that wa how FPMT mandala wa eventually founded to coheively keep the organization together! 3

2 5 y e a r i n c e L a m a Ye h e ' What wa it like in the 1970 to be in the midt of a great teacher like Lama Yehe? In thi iue, Shabda aim to give a glimpe into the variou manifetation of Lama Yehe charimatic, widom and big love through the intimate reflection of hi devout tudent. Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche ha on many occaion praied the inetimatiable qualitie of Lama Yehe, whom he decribe a kinder than all the Buddha of the three time! Excerpt were taken, with permiion, from April-June 2009 Mandala. Even the flower I preented to Lama Yehe melled bad. But when it wa my turn to tand in front of him, omething remarkable happened my awful hangover diappeared and I felt incredibly clean and freh. People told me I even looked younger. I will never forget that one mile he gave me and felt I really have taken refuge A tudent taking refuge vow from Lama Yehe on July in Autralia who had partied hard before the refuge ceremony. On the flight back to Hong Kong, Lama Yehe wa itting in the row behind me. At one point, he leaned forward and aid omething I didn t hear properly o I aked him to repeat it. He leaned forward again and aid, Ladie and gentlemen, faten your eat belt. I thought it mildly amuing and feigned laughter, but a couple of minute later the plane began haking violently. People were creaming, cabin attendant lot their tray, it wa probably the wort turbulence I have ever experienced. It wa clear too that Lama wa already aware of what had not hown up on the weather radar Peter Kedge, leaving Autralia with Lama Yehe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche on Augut 4,

In the clear country air, the roaring and grinding gear provided a backdrop to Lama Zopa RInpoche teaching on the lam rim. Much to Yehe Khadro horror, Lama often took both hand off the wheel while bowling along, turning to her with a huge grin. Jhampa Zangpo, too, wa beide himelf. Lama aid I got too hyterical, but hi antic were hair-raiing. He had o much guto and abolutely no interet in taking thing lowly - From Big Love, the forthcoming biography of Lama Yehe. I can t viualize! Someone yelled out during a teaching. Of coure you can! Lama replied. Pizza! From Big Love, the forthcoming biography of Lama Yehe. Lama Yehe Photo ourced from Life with Lama Yehe wa never dull. Peter Stripe, whom Lama had recently (in 1976) helped to find a Tara tatue in Delhi, wihed to return the favour. He bought a little red Fiat 500 car for him and ent it up to Chenrezig by train. Yehe Khadro and Canadian monk, Jhampa Zangpo, had the uneviable tak of teaching Lama to drive, but what he Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Ven. For the benefit of a tudent, Lama pointed toward himelf and aid, Dorje Chang indicating that Rinpoche wa eeing him in the apect of Dorje Chang. ( Who i Dorje Chang? a tudent once aked him. The bigget Buddha, dear, Lama replied.) Rinpoche wa often een making offering to Lama Yehe with tear running down hi face. At other time, he would not look up at Lama at all. Lama Yehe often addreed Lama Zopa a kuho, meaning monk. From Big Love, the forthcoming biography of Lama Yehe. 5

2 5 y e a r i n c People tended to compete with one another to it next to Lama Yehe at meal time. Lama Zopa wa o thin and acetic. He ate o lowly it made him eem tern but Lama Yehe wa heaven. He d put hi arm around you and enfold you in thi ma of red material, and he had thi incredibly clean, lightly aromatic incene-y mell. All you wanted to do wa cuddle up and get cloer to him. He d hold your hand, roar with laughter and kick hi leg in the air, which delighted u all enormouly. There wa Lama, towel around hi wait and laughing loudly, with every aucepan I poeed on the table, under the table, on the tove, the me wa indecribable. 8 Newletter of Loang Dragpa Centre Peronal & Cloe Up Up Part 2 an evening chat with Gehe Tenzin Zopa It wa over a tall, cool gla of 100 Plu drink on a warm Sunday evening, that Gehela hared with SHABDA hi thought, hope and peronal account candidly, in repone to quetion poed to him. Quetion: Quetion: Could Gehela hare with u ONE leon learned from Gehela (i) childhood (ii) day a a young monk (iii) day a a Gehe Leon from Childhood I n my young day, the relationhip between my father and I wa not good. My father had a negative mind toward me becaue he aid my face didn t look like hi (all my brother and iter looked like him). He wa ditant from me and (now looking back) he ued to give me unreaonably burdenome tak. For example, twice a year, my father would bring ware to Kathmandu to ell. The journey from our village in Tum to Kathmandu took 10 day on foot there and 10 day back. I had to accompany him and wa made to carry a ack weighing about 10kg and I wa then only 7 year old and I wa a very thin child. The ack wa mounted on my back and ecured by a gunny-trap over my head. It wa very heavy and difficult to manage. The journey began from 6am to 6pm. It wa difficult not only becaue of the load and the hour long but I had to keep up with the pace of my father walk. The ack that wa trapped to my back and head wa o heavy that I couldn t even lift my head to ee who the paer-by were when they aw me and uttered Poor Tenzin, poor Tenzin. Thoe were hard day and thee journey were made in winter and a we were poor, my clothe conited of patchwork hort and leevele top and no hoe. We walked in the now. For 2 year, I did thi and the ack-trap over my head, over time, caued a car, a dent on my calp. I only realied thi when my teacher, the late Gehela Lama Konchog cut my hair and we all aw it. It took 2-3 year to heal. A for the leon I learned from that childhood when facing people young or old who are in difficult ituation, be careful of your word. Rather than give pity, intead either give help or give encouragement; never give pity. You ee, during that time, when I didn t hear word of pity, I could jut about bear my ituation but when I heard people pity me, it made me feel that I wa indeed a pitiful creature and that made me feel wore. Similar ituation till exit today over there. I really feel orry for thoe kid and I when I go to Tum, I uually bring a bag of weet and when I come acro uch mall boy carrying burdenome load, I try to give ome word of encouragement like Oh what a trong boy you are and then give them a weet. Thi lift up their pirit. 7

Up Cloe & Peronal Leon from the time a a young monk an evening chat with Gehe Tenzin Zopa Gehe Tenzin Zopa The late Gehe Lama Konchog he late Gehela Lama Konchog wa known to my family a I had 2 aunt who erved Gehela. A a Tchild, I ued to call Gehela my grand uncle even though he wan t. I felt cloe to Gehela even then. When I reached the end of 8 year old, I made up my mind that I wanted to be a monk and I aid o to my father. My father wa not at all pleaed. I inited I wanted to ee Gehela to ak one lat quetion and that wa whether he d accept me a a monk if Gehela accepted, I would traightaway be a monk; if Gehela aid no, I d never again ak thi quetion and remain in the ervice of my father for the ret of my life. Although father wa dipleaed at my plea, he had much repect for Gehela and thu contacted Gehela. I raied my quetion to Gehela and perhap to my father diappointment, Gehela agreed to accept me a a monk. Thereon I went to Kopan Monatery. For one year, I didn t ee my father. Then, my father unexpectedly came to Kopan. I aw him approaching the gompa from a ditance and I quickly ruhed to the room I hared with Gehela to place big Dharma text on my table and began reciting the text loudly, o that my father would hear me Part 2 upon arrival and be impreed. I knew when my father arrived outide the room and wa watching me ilently from there. I continued my loud recitation. After ome time, he came into the room, at quietly next to me and then turned to me, gave me a big hug and aid I m very proud of you. I cried and he cried and he left. Two hour later, he returned with a new, yellow, made-in-china blanket (which would have been very cotly for him to buy) and gave it to me aying Thi i my preent. Be a good boy and I love you. I erved him tea and continued to act a if I wa in deep tudy. Even though it wa out of my michief that I acted out my recitation to impre my father, the point i, it made him happy. He finally left and for 3 year, no new about my father wa received. One day, Ven Marcel and Ven Shenpen came to ee me and Ven Shenpen pulled me aide and told me that my father had paed away. My mind went into a blank. Then, intead of going to cla, I ran to the gompa and aw Lama Yehe tupa. I had no money at all but wanted to offer a light which cot 1 rupee. I went to the gompa keeper and aked him to pleae light a candle for my father even though I had no money to pay for the candle and that I d pay him back when I had the money. Until today, who I am, my trong determination to be a monk and a table monk, i due to my remembering the kindne of my father. A for the leon I learned from thoe day a a young monk wa the importance of giving delight to one parent. No matter how tough they are with u, deep inide they cherih u. If we don t get a chance to pleae our parent, it might be a ource of regret later on. That why I have no regret at all in repect of my relationhip with my father. 8

Leon a a Gehe Up Cloe & Peronal an evening chat with Gehe Tenzin Zopa pleaed becaue even though Gehela never aw me graduate a Gehe, Phuntok Rinpoche did. I know my Guru are happy with me. Whatever mall ervice I can offer to people here, without my original motivation and effort to tudy, I wouldn t be able to be of any help. Part 2 Graduation - 20th March 2007 During my Gehe tudie, there were tremendou obtacle even though I wa inglepointed in wanting to become a Gehe o that I could erve my Guru. The obtacle were in the form of Gehe Lama Konchog having cancer and being hopitalied requiring contant care and cloe attention; hi eventual paing away, building of the Buddha, 40 foot memorial tupa to Gehela at Kopan, all thee happened during my tudie. However, I tuck to my motivation and reolved to continue tudying until I received my Gehe degree, all of which were approved by all my Guru. The leon learned from thi: Make ure one motivation i 100% pure and correct. Then when obtacle come, it won t caue you to give up and you will achieve your aim. So now, I feel I can do a bit of ervice to my Guru and to Phuntok Rinpoche, the late Gehe Lama Konchog reincarnation. If I didn t put effort in tudying to completion, I would only be able to make tea and thukpa (Tibetan noodle). Wherea now, I can take reponibility for Phuntok Rinpoche. I am confident that Gehe Lama Konchog would have been Gehe Tenzin Zopa Lat Quetion: Gehela, would you pleae participate in thi word aociation game - I will give Gehela ome word and Gehela can repond by telling me what immediately come to Gehela mind upon hearing each word: Lama Zopa Rinpoche Gehela reply = The greatet inpiration for my life. Worry = Think poitive No time to tudy Dharma = Excue LDC member = Great Potential Gehe Tenzin Zopa = I am very happy. It wa 11.30pm by the time the interview finihed. Much wa hared, moving torie told and uplifting apiration expreed With deep gratitude and joy, thank You, our mot kind Gehe Tenzin Zopa. May Gehela remain with u until the end of amara, to guide u and be our piritual friend. 9

Dharma for Kid DfK a it i popularly called i an early ucce tory, which growing participation of children and parent alike on Sunday at LDC. Shabda approached thi pioneering team of mom, child educator and child enthuiat to hare omething of themelve with reader - From Kim - A dyfunctional mother with now 2 grown up children, it never ever croed my mind to volunteer for DfK. A converation with Huei on it and the 16G reulted in my requet to take a look at the 16G and inadvertently got me involved. I wa wowed. My ubequent thought were my children needed thee or wa it I who needed them! So I ed my older on the 16G and printed everal copie. One I gave to my younger on who i till taying at home, the ret I wanted to tick in on the fridge and my dreing table. I never got around doing that and left copie lying on my dining table. From Janet Volunteering to help run the D4k cla ha been extremely rewarding. There i ome preparation work to localize the programme. Firtly, I had to be the tudent, to familiarize myelf with the 16 Guideline and to tudy the Ready, Set Happy teaching guide. To thi end, the author of 16G, Alion Murdoch and Deki-Lee Olderhaw were valuable teacher and coache. I am till attempting to habituate the principle and to my own benefit, preparing for the dfk clae erve a a contant reminder to live the value! A friend from overea who tayed with me for everal day and who ha 2 children aw the 16G. He wa thoroughly impreed noting that they would be beneficial for hi children who are intelligent and doing extremely well academically. My younger on on hi own, howed the 16G decription to hi college mate. The honety and innate (ometime even uncanny) widom and directne of LDC DfK children howed me that unle I integrate thee value into my life incerely I will not be able to hare them convincingly. I am profoundly rewarded for the little effort I put in helping the dfk clae. I am alo bowled over by the adorable little guru big and mall for they are alo my teacher perhap even more than I am to them. "Each of you give me a leon" " The dfk team rotate the teaching role. I went firt with the Humility topic and wa delighted to ee the whole gompa full of children every Sunday and even happier to dicover that they were extremely perceptive and participative. I am learning all the time a well, from the children input and oberving their learning tyle. We try to apply the leon learnt from each cla, to continuouly improve our future leon plan. When I firt raied my hand to become a volunteer at LDC, I didn t fully realize the immene peronal benefit I would be receiving. I would therefore like to thank Huei for giving me thi opportunity, to the ret of the Dfk volunteer for being a great team to work with and to Gehe Zopa for hi guidance, encouragement and upport. From Leanne When I firt aw the requeting for volunteer for a dfk programme, I wa really excited. I wanted my little niece and her mum to attend a a firt thought. I took the plunge and volunteered myelf. When it wa explained that the program wa for primary chool children (my background i teaching pre-chooler), there wa a bit of heitation but I till went ahead to get involved. The children are traight forward, have a great ene of humour, produce amazing work, are artitic, have good undertanding and apply widom. I oberved ome poitive change have taken place in ome of the children, which ha been really touching. 13

From Jane Thoo To be honet, I think I am till learning in term of communication with kid, undertanding and patience toward kid at each DfK eion! Thank to my fellow DfK teacher whom I really think are aweome! From Fei Teacher, I want to go to the toilet. Teacher, I don t have colour pencil. It feel a bit awkward to be called a teacher when I feel that I am till young myelf ha ha. I never thought of volunteering in dfk a my initial plan wa to attend the dfk cla. But I wa over-aged (ha ha). An m from Huei to braintorm idea for dfk wa the tarting point that got the ball rolling. It become more and more fun and feel like I am going back in time, when I am electing cute and colorful pencil, ticker of all hape and ize, chocolate etc to be ued during the cla. In the dfk leon, I had the opportunity to facilitate the break out eion for the kid below 7. Normally we will do drawing or coloring when the older kid are having dicuion or we will do imple verion of the group activitie. You can ee what on their mind through their drawing. I really doubt that they re below 7 year old. They are totally different from how we were at their age. I think perhap they re manifetation of bodhiattva to check on u ha ha. From Mel Dharma for Kid From Mel, who though not part of the teaching team, i a regular volunteer at DfK earning him the affectionate label given by the kid a Uncle Mel - I would like to hare with you what two children told me about Patience : "it i tolerating omething irritating that make me angry; doing omething that I don't like uch a cleaning the drain, weeping the floor etc; and patience i like umbrella which will helter from the rain of anger". I almot fell off the chair when I heard Nicole remark but luckily I wa already eated on the floor and wa aved from that embarrament ha ha. I think Nicole parent would have been very proud to know of their daughter' thought on the ubject. Su Ern' mum and dad will feel the ame way if they were to hear of their daughter' view on patience: "keeping control of our mind and not to throw tantrum; to think poitively and not to ue rude or offenive word; to keep calm to help keep control of the ituation; and to think how much damage anger will caue and to tay in control with our mind. I wa atounded at the widom which I would not have been able to whip up during a 2-minute cla exercie. I know for ure that both of them poke from their heart. I think each of the children gave very revealing thought on the ubject, which mot adult like myelf, will imply bruh off. I am humbled to know that we have uch brilliant children and I am truly learning from them. Ye, the kid do liten and they do come up with the mot amazing torie and it make it o worthwhile for u to be with them jut being themelve! It all worth it for me when the kid ay they like the clae and they really enjoy all the activitie, epecially the food. J Volunteering in dfk a well a at LDC i truly wonderful and rewarding work. I have learned a lot along the way, both mentally and phyically. I have learnt from our preciou guru; our dfk teacher and mot of all, from dfk kid. After litening to my experience, anyone here intereted to join u? There are till a few vacancie available Latly, I would like to expre my heartfelt gratitude to all dfk teacher; Huei and mot importantly, our beloved guru, Gehe Tenzin Zopa. Love you all! Fei 14
