1 Volume 9 Number 3 T H E N E W S L E T T E R O F T H E B U C K E Y E H O U S E R A B B I T S O C I E T Y Fall 2005 The Gif of Life By Krisi Cole One July morning I go a call from my long-ime veerinarian Dr. Gary Riggs office, asking if I would be willing o have one of my rabbis donae blood for a criically ill rabbi who needed a blood ransfusion righ away. My husband and I give blood regularly so we hough i was only naural o have our pes help save a life, oo. I alked wih he ve and we decided I would ake wo large rabbis since hey have more blood volume han small rabbis. I was also a benefi having wo donors available if more blood was needed han could safely be aken from a single rabbi. I gahered up our wo larges rabbis Sylveser, a gian chinchilla, and Louis, a checkered gian and we headed o Meropolian Veerinary Hospial (nicknamed Mero Ve) in Akron, where he ill rabbi was waiing. When I dropped off my guys I asked Dr. Sewar, a colleague of Dr. Riggs, wha was wrong wih he ill rabbi. She said he only had 20% of his blood volume lef, likely due o a laceraion o he mouh, and was in criical condiion. They had sared him earlier on medicaion o build his volume of blood back Buerball and his pal Heaher. up, bu he needed addiional blood as well, herefore a ransfusion was he soluion. 3 3 Our Readers Wrie Dear Buckeye HRS: Paul and I adoped Fores back in 2000 or 2001 (i s been a few years) as a companion o our oher rabbi, Maddie. Unforunaely, Maddie passed away of a severe sinus infecion. I was no Paseurella as we feared, bu i was sill faal. She died suddenly afer her las surgery. We all grieved Maddie s passing. Poor Fores laid on he floor of his playpen and pu his head down. I peed him and he didn shy away from me like he usually did. Afer ha, Fores sared becoming much more friendly wih us humans. He s sill healhy as ever, and eas his hay and salads. His favorie place o hang ou and ake a nap is in Paul s office. He s a big floppy rag doll and les us pick him up and hold him any way we wan, bu his favorie way o inerac is on he floor. If I si down, he ll come up and nudge me unil I give him some aenion. He definiely has his favorie people and avoids hose who don give him respec. He seems mos in une wih me, and lisens inenly o every sound I make, especially when I chirp a him. I know exacly how o ge one or boh ears o sand sraigh up. A friend of mine wached me do his and said Radio Fores is on he air. He comes when called, or whenever he hears he hay bag rusling. He sill has o sleep in his playpen when we re no a home, because he s noorious for geing ino mischief and I don wan him o hur himself. He s a climber and I ve caugh him skidding across he end ables, knocking remoe conrols and knick-knacks in all direcions. Bu forunaely, Paul and I work saggered shifs so someone is usually here all day and he can run around and sprawl on he carpe, nibble my books, and seal he mail o his hear s conen. He also knows when i s bedime. He goes ino his pen wihou being old and wais for me o say good nigh, pe him, and close he door. I hink he likes his pen. I s a carpeed enclosure ha akes up par of he living room. He d probably like o sleep wih us, bu unforunaely I can le him he d jus be up chewing he box spring all nigh. He can resis cords, which resuled in us building elaborae bunny barriers and he sill manages o ge around hem from ime o ime. He knows ha here s somehing irresisible jus on he oher side. Paul and I are boh quie handy wih he soldering iron and elecrical ape. Forunaely, unlike Maddie, Fores doesn care much for geing suck behind he dryer. The nex day I go a message from Marlayne ha Buerball had seadily improved during he nigh and was making good progress. The day afer ha, he go o go home! I has been nice o be able o keep rack of Buerball s progress as he coninued o gain srengh. Buerball is doing fine now and his family is happy o have him healhy again. Cleveland-Massillon Rd Akron, OH or RABBIT BLOOD FACTS The average blood volume of mos rabbis is 6-8% of he body weigh in kilograms and i is safe o wihdraw 6-10% of ha blood volume in milliliers for blood esing. The mos common sies o wihdraw blood from a rabbi are he veins on he side of he back leg (saphenous), he neck (jugular), or he fron leg in larger rabbis (cephalic), and marginal ear veins (he leas preferred). The area is swabbed wih alcohol o disinfec and par he fur, he vein is held off, and a small needle is quickly insered. There is no reason o anesheize he rabbi for his procedure; as long as i is performed genly and slowly, rabbis olerae i well. Rabbis do no have blood ypes like humans do. However, cross-maching can be done. The firs ime a rabbi ges a ransfusion, no maching has o be done. If ha rabbi needs a subsequen ransfusion, hen a sample of he donor s blood as well as a sample of he recipien s blood is combined o see if here is a cloing reacion. If no, he recipien is safe o receive from ha donor. For a ransfusion, firs he blood is drawn from he donor, hen mixed wih an ani-coagulan. Nex i is run hrough a filer and hen given o he rabbi in need of blood.

8 Somebunny Needs YOU! Midas someimes goes by anoher name Swee Boy because of his swee and genle naure. He s easygoing and calm and adaps well o new environmens. Midas doesn have any ineres in chewing excep for nibbling on his imohy hay. He likes o lie in his lierbox, so make sure you provide him wih a large one! His fur is silvery-gray wih a whie spo on his ches, one whie paw, and a whie spo on he ip of his nose. Midas weighs roughly four pounds, was born someime in he fall of 2004, and would be a very good choice for children. Please conac Krisen Dohery Binky Boy is an adorable, lovable English Spo who is approximaely 6 monhs old (as of Sep 05). He has six adorable brown spos in a verical line on his back. He is a real advenurer who loves o explore. He is a lile hesian abou being held, bu his favorie game is o jump on his foser mom s back wheher she is lying on he floor or siing! Someimes he even kisses her ears and buries his head in her hair. He also loves o jump in her lap and follow her around. He loves his veggies, and ges very excied when he hears he refrigeraor door and he salad conainers being opened! He also does a lo of binkies, hence his name. Please conac Krisen Dohery Elsie is a swee young girl, whie wih black spos, weighing roughly 4 lbs. She's happy and calm, and easy o please by giving her los of nose pes. She doesn' mind being held; in fac, she loves o snuggle. Please conac Krisen Dohery Puff is a beauiful and friendly whie rex, approx 6 lbs, wih an markings. If you si on he floor, he will come and si in your lap and he enjoys being peed. Puff is very idy wih his area and his lierbox, is a good eaer, and also enjoys being around oher animals cas in paricular. He loves his willow unnel and chewing on his apple ree wigs. Puff is a very genle rabbi and would be very good wih children. Please conac Krisen Dohery Sadie is an adorable lile Holland lop girl who is very spiried. She s acive and loves o run around franically o ge her exercise, ye she is calm and cuddling when held. In fac, she loves o be held and will snuggle righ ino your arms o fall asleep. There is one cauion abou Sadie, however: she someimes bies unexpecedly and we re no sure why. I s mosly when we ry o remove her bowls from her pen, so we use echniques such as disracion o grab hem. For his reason, Sadie mus go o a home in which he family members have a lo of paience and won ake her biing personally. Therefore, a household wih kids probably wouldn work. If you hink you can provide Sadie wih his special kind of loving home, please conac Krisen Dohery Alfonso, a lile mini-rex, ges so excied for his meals ha he runs round and round franically unil he is fed. If you pick him up however, he mels in your arms and nuzzles his face under your chin. He weighs abou 3.5 lbs, is perfec wih his lierbox, and eas a on of hay for such a lile guy.
