He did no mean his as a criical remark, jus as an observaion abou he very naure of our Order. I menioned his remark o anoher long-ime Member, observing ha I cerainly realized he difficuly in describing our Order o hose unfamiliar wih i. Our dual naure as a chivalric order designed from is incepion o provide a Chrisian mission of service o mankind makes he Order difficul o explain, I noed. Yes, she responded, I ell someone I am a member of he English-Speaking Union, and my lisener immediaely undersands wha I am alking abou. I can do ha when I am describing he Order! As a resul, one of my prioriies will be o ry and develop effecive ways of communicaing who we are and wha our mission of service is. To ha end, we plan o redesign he Priory s websie so ha visiors o i will immediaely be sruck by boh he chivalric elemen of he Order and is mission of service o mankind. Boh elemens are essenial. We are differen han a hospial auxiliary, and ye we are no a group given only o romanicized riuals. Yes, we are a chivalric order (as opposed o some groups falsely claiming hey are), ye our raison d êre has ever been our Chrisian mission of service. And unlike oher organizaions we have an acual beloved Monarch as he Sovereign Head of our Order, and a dedicaed member of he Royal Family as our Grand Prior. These facs mus be cenral o he image on our websie. Visi our new websie when i goes up in he near fuure and give us your houghs and suggesions. Our decision o revamp and improve our websie is suppored by saisics indicaing a shor viewer aenion span, and a low Palmer C. Hamilon, KSJ rae of reurning users. By creaing more updaed, userfriendly echnology (paricularly for mobile devices), we wan o encourage Members o visi regularly and o draw more viewers in general. To ha end, we will be including imely videos and aricles on he Order s work, boh in he Holy Land and around he world, as well as updaes on he work of our own Priory s aciviies. Whaever challenges we face in explaining o he world wha our Order is and does, Priory Members are clearly excied by he work of he Priory and he Order. In he firs five monhs of 2015, our Oblaions have nearly doubled. I is my ferven hope ha we as Members will increasingly hink of our Oblaions no as obligaions we acceped on becoming members of he Order, bu insead as reflecions of our desire o be good sewards. We mus move away from he idea ha Oblaions are some sor of dues, and see hem an opporuniy for us o manifes our suppor for wha makes us ruly differen from oher organizaions he Order s Chrisian mission of service. I know each of us will give prayerful hough and consideraion o wha we give each year. In response, our Priory should and will honor ha decision. Judging from he generosiy shown so far in 2015, our Members are responding jus as I hough hey would o his message. Pro Fide, Pro Uiliae Hominum.

SURPRISING DALLAS: THE 2015 INVESTITURE COMES TO BIG D The Dallas of he 1980 s conjures up visions of cowboys, barbecues, J.R. Ewing, Souh Fork, gliz and glamor. Bu he Dallas of 2015 is much, much more. Dallas is now economically and culurally one of he mos booming, cuing-edge ciies in he US. According o he Visi Dallas websie, Big D is a modern Wild Wes meropolis ha is all abou giving you opions. I is only fiing hen ha he Priory in he USA, experiencing an upsurge in enhusiasm and expansion, should hold is 2015 Invesiure in Dallas in he presence of he Order s Grand Prior, HRH The Duke of Glouceser, KG, GCVO. The 2015 Invesiure is he firs held in he Souhwes Region, (Arkansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas). Chaired by he Region s Chair Joseph M. (Joe) Dealey Jr., CSJ, Invesiure Weekend will begin on Friday, Ocober 30h and coninue o Sunday, November 1s. The Weekend holds pleny of possibiliies for Confrères and guess o discover why Dallas ranked high on Forbes Magazine s 2014 lis of America s Cooles Ciies, which also included he ciies of Ausin, Houson, and San Anonio. The many opions o discover Dallas begin wih he Hilon Anaole Hoel, home base for he Invesiure. Locaed on 45 lush acres in he Design Disric and five minues from downown Dallas, he Anaole is a ciy in iself, a luxury showplace wih 1,606 rooms. Wih an Asian-designed arium lobby and a sculpure garden, he Anaole has reflecing pools, greenery, four ballrooms, a 24-hour business cener, a large healh club (including an indoor baskeball cour), spa and quie seaing pavilions scaered hroughou, as well as four resaurans and a Gossip Bar (for nigh owl Confrères) ha says open unil 2 am. No enough opions? The Hoel also houses 1,000 pieces of Asian ar and aniques from all over he world, he larges collecion ever assembled in an American hoel, in addiion o wo 12-foo high secions of he Berlin Wall. All meeings including he Saurday morning breakfass, he Membership Meeing and he Sunday morning Chivalry Breakfas will be a he Anaole, along wih a Tex-Mex seaed buffe afer he Membership Meeing. Also a he Anaole is he Saurday recepion, which will ake place in he Wedgwood ballroom, (wih is impressive collecion of wha else Wedgwood china) and he gala, in he Coronado Room. There will be pleny of elbow room for all! The hear of his and any Invesiure Weekend is he Service of Rededicaion, his year he 55h in he Priory s hisory. I will ake place a Sain Michael and All Angels Church. Founded in 1945, Sain Michael Parish is home o over 30 Confrères in Dallas and neighboring Park Ciies communiies of Highland Park and Universiy Park. Sain Michael, a beauiful conemporary Episcopal church, hoss one of he larges congregaions in he Episcopal Church of he Unied Saes. The Women of Sain Michael and Mission Oureach Minisry, respecively, coninue heir longsanding pracice of conribuing significanly o S John Eye Hospial Group and hey follow he Hospial s progress hrough meeings wih parishioners Karen K. Pardoe, DSJ, and Joe Dealey. Visi Dallas promises ha Big Things Happen Here. Amid Dallas s beauiful surroundings and sacred spaces wih emperaures in he upper 60 s, and a palee of culural and culinary choices Confrères aending he Invesiure will have pleny of Members of he Invesiure Service Team on a planning visi o Dallas, capured a he Anaole s secion of he Berlin Wall (l. o r.): Andrew D. Brooks, KSJ; Joe Dealey; The Rev d William Hague, DMin, OSJ; Anhony C. Coe, OSJ, and Priory Hisoriographer COL (Re) Howell C. Sasser, CSJ. chances o be surprised. Mos imporanly, hey will have he grea pleasure of supporing our Souhwes Region Confrères as hey hos heir inaugural Invesiure. Big Things are sure o happen! 3 As par of our planning for he Invesiure Service, I visied Sain Michael and All Angels. Alhough Sain Michael s conemporary syle does no mirror he usual Invesiure venue of Gohic cahedral surroundings, he soaring reredos behind he alar capures a similar sense of splendor. The reredos is made of a rare whie marble wih relief carvings of S. Michael and wo angels. These figures are surrounded by naural ghosly gray sreaks in he marble ha look like hundreds of angels ascending ino Heaven. The impression is sunning and highly appropriae for our service, which falls on he Eve of All Sains Day. Our eam was deeply moved by Sain Michael s and he music made by he majesic organ and superb choirs. We were pleased o see an abundance of space ha can easily accommodae a group of our size, easing he challenges of choreography we have experienced in oher spaces. Mos of all, we were ouched by he warm Texas hospialiy we received from our hoss as big and genuine as heir hears and he sae of Texas. Phoo by Joe Dealey. The Rev d William Hague, DMin, OSJ Direcor of Ceremonies MEADOWS MUSEUM: A SMALL PRADO IN TEXAS Afer spending long afernoons in he grea Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, Texas oil magnae Algur H. Meadows began o collec Spanish ar. His collecion, which grew o be one of he fines ouside Spain, was donaed o Souhern Mehodis Universiy in 1978, along wih funds for a museum. 4 PARTNERING WITH FOUNDATIONS: A NEW DIRECTION FOR PRIORY FUNDRAISING An exciing avenue is being explored as he Priory in he USA seeks o raise more funds for S John of Jerusalem Eye Hospial Group. Foundaions across he counry whose mission saemens align wih he work of he Hospial can be a major source of gifs, and as a Confrère you can play a key role in helping help us idenify and approach he righ ones. Hisorically, he Priory has primarily looked o membership for fundraising, and over he years Confrères have given generously, hus enabling us o play a criical role in he Hospial Group s global oureach for funds. Of his we can all be very proud! Ye as he Hospial Group has expanded is reach and buil faciliies in Gaza and he Wes Bank, he need for funds has grown. To help he Hospial Group achieve is goals, our Priory mus now look for new, creaive ways ha are over and above he radiional sources. In he pas, our Priory has had imporan foundaion parners who have made some significan gifs. Bu a much greaer effor is needed o idenify and access he hihero unapped foundaions ha I believe can be grea parners for he fuure. Once hey join heir effors o ours, hese foundaions can become allies in he war agains blindness in he Holy Land, and can help grealy expand he capaciy of he US Priory for raising funds for he Hospial Group. To discover hese poenial parners, we need Confrères across he counry o hink creaively abou heir conacs in he foundaion world. As an example, Vicoria Sheffield, DSJ, former Hospial board member and new Chaper member, recenly made an inroducion o he Lavelle Fund as a possible funder. Working ogeher, he S John offices in Washingon and London, and he Hospial in Jerusalem drew up a gran proposal and submied i. The resul was a $120,000 gran o fund he purchase of a Phaco machine, used in caarac surgery. This new machine will be used in he Gaza clinic, A a May recepion in New York Ciy (l. o r.), Jean Savage, CSJ; Prior Hamilon; Chancellor Paul, and he Rev d Deacon Rober J.A. Zio, CSJ. (Phoo by John M. Shannon, CSJ.) doubling he number of caarac operaions ha can be performed here. This referral is a perfec illusraion of how a foundaion sourced by a Confrère can furher he Hospial Group s work. Now more han ever, i is vial ha we be aler o he possibiliies of appropriae foundaions ha share he Hospial Group s commimen o healhcare and prevenive screening, eye care, and consrucive work in he Middle Eas. As Chancellor of he Priory, I ask you o please focus on idenifying board members or foundaion execuives who could help pave he way for an approach by he Priory. If you can pinpoin such an insiuion and, beer ye, provide us wih a personal conac here, he Washingon office will follow up. Foundaion giving in he firs half of 2015 is off o a very good sar, and we wan o keep his momenum going forward. Your help over and above your Oblaion and oher paricipaion can make all he difference! A Member of he Order since 1977, Douglas Paul, KSJ, served as he Priory s Developmen Chair before becoming Chancellor. He is currenly Vice Chairman-Senior Advisor a Credi Suisse, a global bank headquarered in Swizerland. A member of he Council on Foreign Relaions and a board member of he Foreign Policy Associaion, Doug resides in New York Ciy. His wife, Elizabeh, and son, Nicholas, are also Members of he Order. GIVING APPRECIATED PROPERTY: GETTING THE MOST OUT OF IT The Order of S John is blessed o have many generous, savvy donors supporing is mission wih heir gifs. As someone who advises individuals on esae and asse proecion I d like o share wih you insighs ha may help you plan even more cos-efficienly your giving o he Order. R. Donavon Munford Jr., MSJ As many donors know, smar gif planning combines chariable inen wih cos-efficien planning echniques. The kind of asse given is of criical imporance. Here are wo ideas o consider: Idea #1: Appreciaed Securiies and Real Esae. Securiies are he mos common asses given o he Priory. Gifs of long-erm appreciaed propery can generae he mos favorable ax benefis. Why? Such gifs can provide a double benefi for he donor: an income ax chariable deducion for he full Fair Marke Value (FMV) of he propery plus avoidance of any poenial capial gains ax on he appreciaion. A donor who conribues such propery earns a chariable deducion equal o he propery s FMV, and can hen deduc he gif s full FMV, subjec o a limi of 30% of his or her Adjused Gross Income (AGI) on Form Any excess chariable deducion ha canno be used in he year GIVING APPRECIATED PROPERTY CONTINUED ON PAGE 9 Eyes on he Fuure Vol. 6, No. 2 4 THE ORDER OF ST JOHN

SPACES OF THE HEART: KAZIE METZGER HARVEY, CSTJ The disance beween Bee Giyorgis (Church of Sain George) in Lalibela, Ehiopia, and Sain Thomas Fifh Avenue in New York Ciy is 6,824 miles. One is a UNESCO World Heriage sie carved from a single rock in a ciy ofen described as a 13hcenury New Jerusalem. The oher is an early 20h-cenury French High Gohic Revival church known for an elaborae reredos, and gorgeous deail. The wo are oally differen, ye on a recen rip o Lalibela, Kazie Mezger Harvey fel a profound connecion beween Sain Thomas, her own spiriual home, and Bee Giyorgis. Of Lalibela she says, For Chrisians, i s a rip no o be missed: The aliude is quie high and he rek o he church is srenuous, bu worh i. You can really feel he deep roos of Chrisianiy. Tackling exoic places is nohing ou of he ordinary for Priory Chaper member Kazie Harvey. Her own life s rek has aken her from her roos in Louisiana around he globe o Africa, he Middle Eas and Asia. Growing up in Corpus Chrisi, Texas, hen a segregaed ciy, Kazie had a childhood ha was beer in memory han in fac, bu her parens, who were broadminded, egaliarian and generous o he church and ohers around hem, helped expand her horizons. Afer earning a BA in economics from Duke Universiy, where amazing female professors had a major impac on her, she was on o Harvard Business School. Boh gave her he confidence o pursue and realize her dreams. Focusing on he rapidly growing field of cable elevision and advanced communicaions, Kazie found her calling. She shared her parens egaliarian views, and saw a way o help people in rural communiies and no jus ciy folk o be included in curren evens. The educaional, culural and diverse programing ha would soon become available o all was highly graifying. Maybe we ge oo much news wih he 24-hour news cycle, she says, bu 20 minues a day was no enough! Kazie sared her career as Manager of Business Operaions for RCA American Communicaions, where she was insrumenal in developing he firs saellie delivery of programming o cable. She wen on o serve as Vice Presiden of Business Developmen and Marke Analysis for Group W Cable Inc., a $2 billion cable elevision subsidiary of Wesinghouse Elecric Corporaion. Responsible for developmen of new services, Kazie was a pioneer in pay-per-view programming, sereo audio services, high-speed daa services, home securiy and eleex. She co-founded and became Presiden and CEO of PrimeTime 24, which broadcas saellie signals of ABC, CBS and NBC nework-affiliae elevision o C-band home saellie dish owners. Early on, Kazie me John Harvey, KSJ, a a dinner pary in Manhaan, and, as she says, Lucky us! The couple have wo daughers, Alexandra Beale Harvey, MSJ, and Kaherine S. John Harvey (Kiy), OSJ. Alex is pursuing a Maser s degree in Public Healh Nuriion, and Kiy a PhD in Middle Eas Sudies. In Lalibela, Kazie (3rd from righ) and John (far righ) wih heir our group. Kazie is now CEO of he company founded by her husband John in Personalized Media Communicaions (PMC) is headquarered in Sugarland, Texas. PMC owns a fundamenal paen porfolio relaing o he conrol of neworked equipmen. A self-described big reader and a passionae supporer of Duke Universiy ahleics (noe he Duke blue shir in he phoo), Kazie ypically selecs her non-work aciviies wih care, expecing a reurn on my invesmen of ime and money. She is an angel invesor for Golden Seeds, a for-profi organizaion of primarily female invesors who inves in female-led sarups, which are nooriously hard o fund. Remembering her Louisiana roos, she is also on he board of he French Heriage Sociey and ravels o France regularly wih husband John. Kazie became a member of he Order hanks o her associaion wih he lae Rev d Canon John GB Andrew, OBE, DD, Hon Sub-PrelSJ, and former recor of Sain Thomas Church. Now a Warden a Sain Thomas, he hird woman o hold he pos in he Church s hisory, Kazie is in he mids of spearheading a major renovaion here. The church s 100-year-old organ is being replaced, and he sained glass windows are being resored o heir previous glory. As he sie of several Invesiures and he parish home of many Members, Sain Thomas is dear o he Order s hear. Consecraed in 1916, Sain Thomas has been described as very grand, bu very comforing, wih a solidiy and inegriy of hough. On he oher hand, he 11 celebraed bu simple rock churches of Ehiopia, of which Bee Giyorgis is hough o be he mos finely execued, are said o be living legacies ha picure a world apar, frozen in ime, aracing 80,000 o 100,000 pilgrims a year. I is no difficul o see why Kazie Harvey, wih her appreciaion of he radiional and her nononsense approach o invesing ime and money could love and learn from boh. 6 SOMETHING MORE FOR ALL In 1999 Charlie Hickox, KSJ, and oher Dallas Members of he Order of S John approached me as Chairman of he Deparmen of Ophhalmology a he Universiy of Texas Souhwesern Medical School (UTSW) wih a saed desire of waning o do somehing more for S John of Jerusalem Eye Hospial. They found a very recepive audience. I had learned abou he Hospial while I was a Harvard in he early 1970s. A colleague reurning from a year a he Hospial, described he experience as ruly incredible, having done 10 imes he number of corneal ransplans a cornea fellow usually does in a year. I was very impressed wih ha and he esimony of oher colleagues. I also knew abou he Order s goals vis à vis he Hospial. Boh made me a very enhusiasic paricipan in he ensuing discussions abou somehing more. Also, in a shor period of ime, I was proposed for membership in he Order, so I became more personally involved. Charlie and I worked diligenly o develop a proposal for our ophhalmologiss o paricipae a he Hospial. Charlie raised funds for he proposal s suppor and i came o fruiion as he Dallas Surgeons Fund. Before he plan was finalized, I spen 10 days a he Hospial, finding i a rewarding, DR. JAMES LEHMANN, OSTJ I fell in love wih he Hospial and Jerusalem during my firs visi 10 years ago, in he summer of I was encouraged by Dr. McCulley o visi he Hospial, so afer finishing my residency and beginning he nex phase of my raining, I lived and worked here for wo monhs. The friendships I formed have kep me coming back. Those young residens I me here are now he consulans, or aending physicians, as we call hem in he US. Spring 2015 seemed he righ ime o go back, as i had been wo years since my las visi. There were some newer corneal ransplan echniques ha would be beneficial o share wih Drs. Iyad and Abdallah, he cornea docors a S John. As I planned my fifh rip, I corresponded wih Dr. McCulley, and he said ha Drs. Yu-Guang He and David Kennedy were ineresed in joining me. Boh work wih him a UT Souhwesern. Thus, he Three Amigos, or raher (pu less colorfully) he Three Ophhalmologiss, descended on Jerusalem. The firs morning a he Hospial was spen in clinic, examining paiens for surgery. Immediaely, I was reminded of he severe pahology I remembered. Paiens presen wih eye problems a a much more advanced sage han hey do back in he US. There are also some serious eye condiions ha are much more prevalen in he Middle Eas. Many are he causes for he unique condiions and advanced sage a presenaion, chiefly consanguiniy, povery, poliical barriers, and culural facors. One sory illusraes how posiively he Hospial can impac lives. I involves a 38-year-old woman from Gaza, an ampuee in a wheel chair wih profound blindness in boh eyes she could see only hand movemen. We did a corneal ransplan o correc her hinning cornea. The nex day o her deligh she could see way beer han she saw before, an unusually quick improvemen. Now, she will be able o see faces and move around on her own. Over he las 10 years, here have been many improvemens a he Hospial. There are now home-grown, fellowship-rained sub-specialiss. In he pas, he Palesinian docors would do pediaric and general ophhalmology, bu The Hospial, a quie oasis of peace. (Phoo by Dr. James Lehmann.) specialiss in cornea, reina, glaucoma, and oculoplasics were lacking. Surgeons from he UK and he US would visi and ake on he more difficul cases. However, hanks o Medical Direcor Dr. Jeanne Garh and former CEO Rod Bull, here is a cadre of Palesinian docs who are well rained, ehical, and dedicaed o working a he Hospial. Over ime, my visis have changed from eaching he local docors o more of an exchange of skills and ideas. Drs. Iyad and Abdullah are fanasic surgeons, and hey each me as much as I each hem. If I could clone myself I would make anoher me, go back, and work full ime! Dr. Lehmann is an eye surgeon a Focal Poin Vision in San Anonio, Texas. He compleed his residency and fellowship a UT Souhwesern. He is Assisan Faculy a he UT Healh Science Cener a San Anonio, and performs voluneer clinical and surgical duies in he US and inernaionally. DR. YU-GUANG HE I was inspired o make he rip by ha grea guy James Lehmann! Whenever he reurned from service here, I heard all abou S John of Jerusalem Eye Hospial. I also knew of he Hospial from associaes like Dr. McCulley as well as my Eyes on he Fuure Vol. 6, No. 2 6 THE ORDER OF ST JOHN

THREE DOCTORS GIVE AND RECEIVE pleasan and safe place o work, bu one less han ideally equipped for modern paien surgical care. Iniially, we sen young docors for six-monh roaions. However, unres in he region led us o change our approach and we decided o send for shorer periods of ime more senior ophhalmologiss, sub-specialiss wih cuing-edge medical and surgical capabiliies who could boh educae Hospial docors in more advanced echniques and provide direc paien care. While he Fund s iniial goal was o educae, our effors along wih hose of ohers and he visionary leadership of Dr. Jeanne Garh have resuled in a very modern Hospial wih up-o-dae operaing rooms, he laes surgical capabiliies, and a permanen saff of sub-specialy surgeons on sie year round. As you will see from he following sories, hese sponsored visis have now become an exchange of houghs, ideas and surgical echniques. This is somehing more for all. Dr. James P. McCulley, MD, FACS, FRC Ophh (UK), CSJ, coninues as Chair of he Deparmen of Ophhalmology a UTSW. paiens who are Members of he Order of S John. Tha hese kinds of people were giving of heir resources, experise and ime o he Hospial made me wan o see i for myself. Wha I found was a sae-of-he-ar Hospial serving hose who need i mos. Locaed in a very nice area, in a nes of consulaes and hospials, he Hospial is so well mainained, looking as beauiful and peaceful as a privae garden. The inpaien ward is very clean, quie and well organized. Wha sruck me was he eamwork and excellen skills of he saff; mos are local and have worked here a long ime. They respec docors, paiens and wha hey are doing. Two of he Three Amigos: Dr. Yu-Guang He and Dr. David P. Kennedy (Phoo by Dr. James Lehmann.) I was lucky enough o winess he oureach effor, and was amazed ha he saff could ransform a simple room ino a grea eye exam lane in jus a few minues. The firs day we examined 72 persons, he second day 80. The Hospial has wo vans, each loaded wih wo nurses, wo echnicians, and very good equipmen. They screen a lo of Palesinian people! Professionally, I learned a lo, including a few new ricks. Operaing rooms were firs rae, wih sophisicaed equipmen. I was very impressed wih he surgical level of Dr. Omar, a reinal specialis and former Hospial residen who had done a very ough privae fellowship in India. Having learned from differen reinal surgeons who had visied he Hospial from all over he world, he is a skilled, smar vireo-reinal surgeon. I worked wih him on eigh cases, some very challenging, and he is world class. In he end, i is all abou reaing paiens, such as he 24-yearold man from Gaza who suffered a peneraing eye injury several years ago and was recenly diagnosed wih a deached reina. As wo of he Hospial reinal surgeons were in Jordan a a conference, I piched in and did he surgery. We preserved his vision, and ha means a lo o him and his sociey. The chance o help make his happen only made me wan o paricipae more in he Hospial s work. The rip far exceeded my expecaions and imaginaion. Dr. Yu-Guang He, MD, has been a UTSW since An Associae Professor, he specializes in vireo-reinal diseases, including agerelaed macular degeneraion, diabeic reinopahy, and oher disorders of he reina. A graduae of Tongji Medical Universiy in Wuhan, China, he came o he US in DR. DAVID P. KENNEDY When Dr. Lehmann invied me o make he rip o S John of Jerusalem Eye Hospial, I had hree objecives in mind. One was o expand my professional knowledge by seeing he differen ypes of pahologies ha presen hemselves in he Middle Eas. The second was o learn abou he barriers o medical care here, and he hird was o ge a good general sense of Palesinian culure. All hree objecives were realized. One condiion I winessed is very common among Palesinians: Vernal Keraoconjunciviis, a recurring seasonal disorder seen mainly in ho, dry climaes and characerized by ocular surface inflammaion. Also of value o me in my fuure pracice was exposure o he DALK surgical procedure. This parial hickness corneal ransplan reas keraoconus, a non-inflammaory eye condiion ofen resuling in significan visual impairmen. The normally round, dome-shaped cornea progressively hins, causing a cone-like bulge. DALK surgery is especially good for young paiens, who make up he bulk of he Palesinian populaion wih keraoconus. DALK does no SOMETHING MORE FOR ALL CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE THE ORDER OF ST JOHN 7 Eyes on he Fuure Vol. 6, No. 2

SOMETHING MORE FOR ALL CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE replace he porion of he cornea commonly responsible for ransplan rejecion, so he ransplan lass longer and obviaes he need for addiional ransplans. I was especially sruck by he excellen care he Hospial saff delivers, from surgeons o nurses o scrub echs. Everyone is involved and ruly cares abou he paiens, who range from babies o he elderly. One, for example, was an old man wih a corneal perforaion caused by fungal keraiis, an infecion of he cornea. We diagnosed his and sared he appropriae reamen. Wih he excellen care he received, he sared o improve, and his eye may be saved by he Hospial s good work. Lasly, I learned ha Palesinians are a warm, generous group of people, wih a respec for heir elders regardless of socioeconomic class. (This is, unforunaely, all oo rare in he US.) They have persevered hrough a grea deal of adversiy and many need help o mee heir basic needs, paricularly healh care. The docors ha I encounered were enhusiasic abou heir paiens care and have an urge o serve heir own people. As much as he echniques I learned, his was one of he rip s lasing impressions. This young man s sigh and hope will be saved. David P. Kennedy received a BA from he Universiy of Texas a Ausin, and a Docor of Medicine from Louisiana Sae Universiy School of Medicine in New Orleans. Afer his residency raining a UTSW, he is now a fellow of Cornea and Exernal Disease here. In he fall of 2015, he will join a privae pracice in Meairie, Louisiana, his birhplace. HOLY LAND, HOLY WORK: THE 2016 PRIORY PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND AND THE HOSPITAL For housands of years, pilgrimage o Jerusalem has been an inspiring, life-changing experience. I is no less so oday. From his ciy, God has chosen o heal he world, and from his ciy, he Order of S John operaes one of he Middle Eas s grea eye hospials. From April 7-17, 2016, he Priory in he USA will hos a pilgrimage o Jerusalem, S John of Jerusalem Eye Hospial and he Holy Land. The pilgrimage also includes ime in Behlehem, he Jordan River Valley, Jericho, Nazareh, he Sea of Galilee and he Crusader ciy of S. Jean d Acre. This will be a rich ime spiriually, emoionally and inellecually for all who paricipae. And while we will receive much, we will offer he same. The mission of he Order in he Holy Land is a courageous one ha draws srengh from every visi, every prayer, every gif ha we Confrères can offer. Our pilgrimage shows he dedicaed saff and paiens of he Hospial and he peoples of he Holy Land ha hey are neiher forgoen nor alone. Comforable accommodaions will provide us wih he res and hospialiy we need o open our hears and minds o he living presence of God in he peoples and evens of his unique land. Space is limied and several Confrères have already enrolled. The Priory s pilgrimage o Jearusalem and he Hospial offers a pracical, life-changing way o connec wih our God and he inspiring work of he Hospial. 9 AN EYE-OPENING EXPERIENCE Having been invesed o he Order in 2013, I knew before joining ha he Order of S John did criical work and was a worhy cause. As a Member, I have gained a greaer undersanding of he specific mission and inegral naure of he Eye Hospial, ye nohing gave me a fuller appreciaion of he Order s lifechanging services han ime spen a he Hospial. On my firs visi in Augus 2014, I me Brigadier Tom Ogilvie- Graham, OSJ, and was reaed o he Order s hospialiy. I is no exaggeraion o say ha he experience moved me and deepened my connecion o he Priory. In March 2015, my wife Roxana and I raveled ogeher o Jerusalem for a full our of he Eye Hospial. I would be an undersaemen o say ha he geopoliical siuaion in he region is difficul. Ye he Eye Hospial is regarded by all as an agen for posiive change. I sunned me o see such universal reverence for he Order in a climae where ensions run high. Tha paiens receive world-class eye care wihou regard o race, naionaliy, religion, or abiliy o pay is nohing shor of miraculous, especially when considering he lack of an alernaive. Seeing wih our own eyes he apoliical work of he Eye Hospial was jus he sar. Touring he faciliies during operaing hours, he professionalism and efficiency of he saff was exremely clear. Operaing in accordance wih culural norms, we oured wings of he Hospial designed o provide exra accommodaions o women and children. I could sense genuine appreciaion from he paiens waiing for heir urn, and he children clearly knew Jackson and Roxana in a selfie aken a Damascus Gae. hey were in good hands a he Hospial an impressive fea, o say he leas. The Hospial saff was generous in he ime hey gave o me and very sincere in heir work. Seeing he Hospial give new life o is needy paiens opened my eyes o is ruly righeous purpose and renewed my appreciaion for he role he US Priory plays. I would urge my fellow Confrères o visi he Hospial o gain a greaer connecion o he work on he ground. I guaranee i will redouble your graefulness for and commimen o he honorable cause. Jackson Howard, MSJ, holds degrees from Vassar College and American Universiy, and sudied a he Peruvian Diplomaic Academy. Having sudied Inernaional Peace and Conflic Resoluion, he works a a diplomaic nonprofi. Jackson and his wife Roxana married in 2013 and he was invesed ino he Order less han one week laer. They live in Washingon, DC. GIVING APPRECIATED PROPERTY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 of he gif can be carried forward for up o five years. An example of how his works in pracice: John owns securiies wih a FMV of $30,000 ha he purchased several years ago for $10,000. He is in a combined federal and sae income ax bracke of 40%. If John conribues hese securiies o he Order of S John, he will receive a chariable income ax deducion of $30,000, saving him approximaely $12,000 (40% x $30,000) in federal and sae income axes. The income ax savings reduce he cos of his gif o $18,000 ($30,000 minus $12,000). John, who has an AGI of $80,000, can deduc $24,000 in he curren year ($80,000 x 30%). The remaining $6,000 can be carried over and deduced in he following year. Idea #2: Capial Gain Avoidance. A donor who makes an ourigh gif of long-erm capial gain securiies or real esae avoids paying capial gains ax on he appreciaion. Capial gains are axed by he IRS in he 15% o 20% range, plus are subjec o sae income ax. As a resul, a donor can realize subsanial savings by conribuing propery raher han selling i and conribuing he afer-ax proceeds. Again aking John as our donor: John is in a combined federal and sae capial gains ax bracke of 25%. If John sells he sock for $30,000 FMV, he will have o pay capial gains ax of $5,000 on he $20,000 in appreciaion (25% x $20,000). He would hen only have $25,000 in sales proceeds o give o he Order. If insead he elecs o conribue he sock, John s chariable income ax deducion will be he full FMV of $30,000, saving him $12,000 in income axes as described in Idea #1. In addiion, he avoids paying he $5,000 capial gains ax on he appreciaion. The combined ax savings are $17,000 ($12,000 + $5,000) on a gif of $30,000! If you would like o make a gif of appreciaed propery o he Order or have quesions abou he process, please conac Execuive Direcor Ruh Ann Skaff a o learn more. This will be a win/win siuaion for boh you and for he Order, which grealy needs your conribuion! Chair of he Murisan Sociey, R. Donavon Munford Jr., MSJ, is a CPA and pracicing lawyer in Raleigh, NC. 10 TRUE OR FALSE: PROTECTING THE ORDER OF ST JOHN As members of he Order of S John we are par of a 900-year chivalric radiion. Sadly, his illusrious hisory has someimes araced copycas or even fraudsers. Some of hese false flag organizaions perform laudable chariable works; ohers have perfuncory chariable aciviies. Sill ohers are merely pockeing money while selling wha hey claim is membership in a valid chivalric order. All are rading on he good repuaion of legiimae Orders of S John, and as a resul he resources for he chariable works of hese Orders are reduced. Ye elling a false order from a legiimae order is no always easy. Several years ago, an Arabian Gulf monarchy was confused and ried o donae o a false order, hinking i was making a gran o our Order. More recenly, he Holy See graned a group believed o be he Order of Mala permission o use a church in Rome for an invesiure. I wasn, and he permission was quickly wihdrawn when he ruh was discovered. So wha is a legiimae Order and how are false ones idenified? Some counries deermine legiimae orders by law, and regulae chivalric ones. France oulaws wearing decoraions no approved by he governmen. Ialy has also adoped legislaion, and even issued a lis of orders no considered legiimae. Wihin he Commonwealh, HM The Queen is he Founain of Honour for her realms graning honors. In he USA, he governmen grans some decoraions bu no iles, and does no regulae orders of chivalry. Consequenly, we canno look o he law o idenify a legiimae order. However, he Inernaional Commission of Orders of Chivalry (ICOC), a privae group of disinguished expers, can guide us. Is curren crieria for deermining a legiimae chivalric order includes hese guidelines: (i) Privae individuals may have had he auhoriy o esablish chivalric orders in he disan pas, bu no currenly, (ii) Every independen counry has he righ o esablish orders, and (iii) Dynasic orders esablished by sovereign houses (ruling houses a he ime of he 1814 Congress of Vienna or laer) reain heir validiy regardless of laer poliical changes. The Mos Venerable Order of he Hospial of S John of Jerusalem, is herefore, legiimae as a Crown Order of HM Queen Elizabeh II, a reigning sovereign. Oher legiimae Orders of S John include: (i) The Johannierorden, which is regulaed and recognized by Germany, and has semi-auonomous commanderies in Finland, France, Hungary, and Swizerland, (ii) Johannier Orde in he Neherlands, which since 1948 has been under he Duch Crown and (iii) Johannierorden i Sverige in Sweden, since 1946 under he Crown of Sweden. These four orders have cooperaed since 1961 as The Alliance of he Orders of Sain John of Jerusalem, based in Basel, Swizerland. They work alongside The Sovereign Miliary Order of S John of Jerusalem, also known as The Order of Mala, a Roman Caholic religious order and sovereign naion ha has diplomaic relaions wih over 120 counries. (I is lised by he ICOC as he world s sole remaining independen order of chivalry.) Andrew Brooks a he 2014 Invesiure, wih fellow Californian and new Member Barbara Joyce La Mair. Wha is being done by he Alliance and he Order of Mala o preven he creaion and spread of false orders of S John? Togeher, hey have esablished a commiee o couner he misuse of he names, emblems and official documens of he legiimae orders, and o foresall unlawful acs arising from he imiaion of hose names and emblems. This commiee also ries o preven confusion in he minds of he public, who may be receiving misinformaion ha would impede he welfare and aciviies of he naional and inernaional bodies of he Order of Mala and of he Alliance Orders. The Alliance and Order of Mala have each regisered rade and service marks in a number of counries. They have also reached an agreemen beween hemselves on which owns he righs o several specific marks and names. In he US, our Order and he Order of Mala have each regisered various names and marks wih he US Paen and Trademark Office. Our own regisraions include our badge of he eigh-poined sar wih he Queen s beass, various forms of our name, he whie cross on he red field wih he royal cres in he upper lef quadran (he Arms of our Order), and he Arms of he Priory in he USA. How o preven he growh of false orders is somehing every Confrère should ake seriously. Firs of all, as par of he nominaion package, each candidae for our Order mus submi an underaking ha he or she is no (and will no in he fuure become) a member of any order purporing o be an Order of S John. Once Members, Confrères should assis our Order by educaing he public abou he legiimae hisory and basis of our Order, he fellow Alliance Orders, and he Order of Mala. Members should also inform he Priory office if hey become aware of any groups suspeced of represening hemselves as a legiimae Order of S John. By remaining vigilan, Members perform a valuable service o he Order, ensuring ha he honor of he name of he Order of S John is proeced. The money raised in heir communiies will go o help achieve our own Order s mission o help and proec he sick and he poor, and he Hospial Group s resources will be proeced. Andrew Brooks, KSJ, is an aorney wih The Trademark Group, a Selzer Caplan McMahon Viek pracice group, in San Diego, California. One way is hrough he S John Voluneer Corps, founded in Here is one Confrère s moving esimony o is value. NO VET DIES ALONE There was a new paien in he Hospice Ward a McGuire Veerans Hospial las Thursday. The Korean Ve had jus had a laryngecomy operaion for he removal of his cancerous voicebox. He couldn speak, and he looked scared. Many years ago, my faher underwen ha operaion, and I recalled how he had learned esophageal speech in is afermah. I alked abou ha memory and, on my iphone, looked up he naional assisance organizaion o which such paiens urn. My new Ve friend was delighed, and he smiled profusely. He was in no doub ha (despie he operaion) he spread of his cancer limied his lifespan, bu he waned o inves every effor o enrich his remaining ime. I wen on o see his neighbor, a Vienam Ve whom I had been visiing for several weeks. He was a few days away from a reurn home for home-hospice care, and he waned me o know before he lef how much my visis had mean o him. Then i was on o my wo WWII Ves, whose fragiliy had no ye impaired heir willingness o recollec D-Day and VE Day. On ha paricular Thursday, I glanced sadly a an empy bed where, unil he had died he nigh before, my favorie paien had lain. An aged Navy Ve, he had spen decades following his service wresing a living ou of a pig farm. He discussed wih me over many weeks boh his srong religious faih and his pride ha he had amassed savings of a few housand dollars o leave o his kin. As an SJVC paricipan, I am par of a VA program called No Ve Dies Alone. Adminisered by chaplains, i is a coordinaed means of securing visiors for Veerans in VA hospice deparmens a he end of heir lives. I brings company, undersanding, and succor o mainly senile Veerans and heir families. Before my hospice visis, I spend several hours on Thursday morning in one of he hospial s several clinics. My work here is mechanical. I samp, suff and seal envelopes conaining appoinmen leers. When I began ha aciviy, I fel demeaned sor of like a copying machine or a waer cooler off in he corner. Ye I soon realized ha geing he waiing liss for appoinmens winnowed down is one of he VA s greaes challenges, and so I worked hard o esablish a rappor wih physicians and he Civil Service saff. Afer a monh or so, I was able o acfully discuss he exs and he objecives of he leers and o make successful proposals for heir conens and overall use. I like o hink I am helping he VA funcion more efficienly. Any large Civil Service environmen involves a lo of hierarchy, proecions, and lines of auhoriy, cusom, and credi. VA Hospials are big and bureaucraic, and presen precisely he kind of challenge ha we who have lived our lives in leadership posiions are inclined cynically o dismiss. For all ha our leaders declare heir deerminaion o improve hem, he hospials sill face huge resource deficiencies. A nigh, for example, he same physicians who perform ER duy are ofen on duy for an enire hospial. To do good in hese circumsances is no always easy. Ye based on my weekly experiences I believe ha our Order s decision o esablish a relaionship wih he US Deparmen of Veerans Affairs is a sound one. As I made my way hrough he somewha labyrinhine process of accrediing myself as a voluneer, I wondered wheher ha was so. Ye as I esablished human relaionships wih VA players, I became more confiden. Now, several monhs ino he enerprise, I have come o he conclusion ha, even if he Order were no he agen of my engagemen, I would wan o mainain ha engagemen anyway. I is very rewarding, and i is, in my growing experience, he very subsance of Ubi carias, ibi Chrisus es. Mos Members of he Order have only read abou hese people, whose long lives have involved no only miliary service bu, in mos cases, many disadvanages. Bringing relief o hem requires communicaion, undersanding, and humiliy. Ofen, as I go on my hospial rounds, I hink of he docors, nurses, and saff whom I encounered on my visi o S John of Jerusalem Eye Hospial. They, oo, have o cross boundaries and o persevere in order o do good. Our Priory s parnership wih he VA gives us a very real opporuniy o do he same. Ambassador (re.) Randolph M. GAIL WRIGHT GOLTRA: A CAN DO LIFE Gail Golra breaks bread wih Hospial saff on one of her many visis. Gail Wrigh Golra, DSJ, died peacefully on April 17, ending a 22-year bale wih cancer. An ar hisorian and arden sailor, Gail came o he Order hrough anoher chariable organizaion. She and my uncle, Peer Golra, KSJ, were on a cruise ha was following he movemens of he Crusaders from he Dalmaian Coas o Rhodes and on o Mala. Serendipiously, he boa was laden wih Order Members. One of hem, he lae Mary Carer Jones, DSJ, quickly saw a kindred spiri in Gail and encouraged her o join immediaely. Thus Gail began her 23-year dedicaion o he Order, giving aid and funds, and encouraging as well as enlighening hose around her of he elevaed deeds accomplished by being a Member. Over he years, Gail, wih my uncle Peer, made an impressive 10 rips o he Hospial in Jerusalem and wo visis o he clinic in Gaza, carrying equipmen, bolsering spiris, and helping fundraise while here. Her warmh, keen inelligence, wi and undersanding of he hisory and poliics of heir land won Gail many friends in hese ravels. Boh in Jerusalem and in he US, she would roll up her sleeves and ge o work helping where she could, and find ways o fund essenial programs or lifesaving medical equipmen. Gail will be grealy missed by all. She generously devoed her ime, effors and resources o all hose around her. In her desire o care for hose in need, she was an exquisie represenaion of wha he Order is abou. In addiion o her husband Peer, Gail is survived by her wo sepsons Tad and Alexis and heir children, Phoebe, Wells, Charloe and Josie.
