3 Parshat Vayakhel-Pekude Vayakhel: Moshe Rabbeinu exhorts Bnei Yisrael to keep Shabbat, and requests donations for the materials for making the Mishkan. He collects gold, silver, precious stones, skins and yarn, as well as incense and olive oil for the menorah and for anointing. The princes of each tribe bring the precious stones for the Kohen Gadol's breastplate and ephod. G-d appoints Betzalel and Oholiav as the master craftsmen. Bnei Yisrael contribute so much that Moshe begins to refuse donations. Special curtains with two different covers were designed for the Mishkan's roof and door. Gold-covered boards in silver bases were connected, forming the Mishkan's walls. Betzalel made the Holy Ark (which contained the Tablets) from wood covered with gold. On the Ark's cover were two figures facing each other. The menorah and the table with the showbreads were also of gold. Two altars were made:a small incense altar of wood overlaid with gold, and a larger altar for sacrifices made of wood covered with copper. (C) 2016 Ohr Somayach OVERVIEW: Pekudei (Ex. Ch. 38:21 40:38) Moshe Rabbeinu exhorts Bnei Yisrael to keep Shabbat, and requests donations for the materials for making the Mishkan. On the Ark's cover were two figures facing each other. The menorah and the table with the showbreads were also of gold. Two altars were made:a small incense altar of wood overlaid with gold, and a larger altar for sacrifices made of wood covered with copper. Chazak Chazak! (C) 2016 Ohr Somayach DRASHA: The end of the book of Shemot describes the culmination of the events of the exodus from Egypt, the revelation at Sinai and the construction of the Mishkan/Tabernacle. All of these events are certainly on the positive side of the historical ledger. On the other side of that historical ledger sheet that the book of Shemot represents there is the sin of the Golden Calf and the constant carping and complaining of the Jewish people against Moshe and against the God of Israel. In effect, this sets the template for all further Jewish history. There are always ups and downs, plus and minuses in the national behavior of the Jewish people. The book of Shemot ends on a triumphant note the spirit of God, so to speak, invests and dwells within the Jewish people and the Mishkan/Tabernacle that they so lovingly built promises an eternal relationship. Jewish tradition teaches us that this is the ultimate result of the long story of our existence. It will end triumphantly but there will be many serious bumps on the road before we arrive at our ultimate destination. And therefore it seems especially appropriate that at the conclusion of this holy book, the entire congregation rises to proclaim that we will be strengthened in our lives and experiences. We will attempt to strengthen the positive side of our ledger and minimize the entries on the other side. The Torah expended much detail and space to the construction of the Mishkan/Tabernacle. Part of the reason for the need to adhere to the laws in this regard is that the devil lies in the details. In studying history, we see often that seemingly unimportant details shape great events, with unexpected results. For example, the ineptness of Archduke Ferdinand s chauffer, who drove the car back into the teeth of the assassins ambush after first escaping from it, helped bring about the cataclysmic events that led to World War I. In our People s history, it was the Jewish people questioning why Moshe was late on returning from his ascent on Mount Sinai, miscalculating the timing, which caused the panic and uncertainty which led to the construction of the Golden Calf. Somehow great twists and turns result from seemingly small details. All of Jewish law and halachic decisions are built upon recognizing and analyzing the details of the issues involved. It is the small detail that builds the general rule, not the other way around. We are all aware how in architecture, manufacturing and construction for example, it is the smallest detail that is the difference between success and failure, achievement or disaster. This is in line with the details regarding the Mishkan/Tabernacle, which in turn reflect the Torah itself, which in its turn reflects and represents all of human life. Today s parsha teaches us the requirement of accountability in all aspects of our lives, the need to pay attention to detail and to look into every transaction. All of these ideas are taught to us to help us form a proper ledger book on the basis of whose entries we will be eventually judged. This book of Shemot stands as the book of human judgment and understanding. May we find the strength of character to think carefully and choose wisely. DRASHA: This week s parsha deals at its onset with the holiness of Shabbat. The Torah also emphasizes that this subject and concept was dealt with b hakhel publicly and nationally. We may derive an instructive lesson from this a lesson that has much current relevance in our present society. There are two aspects of Shabbat one public and one private. The private Shabbat has a more active, positive nature attached to it. It is more in the nature ofzachor the remembrances of Shabbat: of kiddush wine, sumptuous meals and the leisurely rest combined with Torah study. But there is also a public aspect of Shabbat that the opening words of this week s parsha represent. It is the concept of a public day of rest - a day of shamor a time of restraint and the absence of the everyday hustle and bustle of commercial and daily life. It is meant to mark what is absent on this day from what we are accustomed to seeing and experiencing. The blessings of public quiet, of shuttered shops and the serenity of Friday nights and Saturday afternoons are the hallmarks of the public Shabbat. 3 The public Shabbat the shamor Shabbat, if you will stands guard to protect the private Shabbat, safeguarding its observance and guaranteeing its survival and holiness. It is not for naught that the Talmud states that zachor and shamor were uttered at Sinai, so to speak, simultaneously in one sound breath. The success of Shabbat can only be realized when both the public and private Shabbat are present together. For various reasons and differing causes, the public Shabbat has been drastically weakened in much of the Jewish world over the past century. Even those who claim to wish to preserve the private Shabbat, often desecrate the public Shabbat. The result of that error is clear to see today, for where there is no presence of a public Shabbat there will eventually be no private one either. The fact that the stores in Jerusalem are closed on Shabbat and that the public busses and trains do not operate on that day is admittedly inconvenient to some or even to many. But the mere absence of these usual everyday factors in our lives creates for us at least the semblance of a public Shabbat and therefore has facilitated the slow but steady growth and strength of the private Shabbat. The absence of the ordinary always reminds us of the extraordinary. A non-jewish tourist asked for a freshly brewed cup of coffee at the Jerusalem hotel where she was staying on Shabbat morning. The solicitous Arab waiter explained to her that he could not comply with her wishes since it was Shabbat. She persisted in her request until the waiter told her in exasperation: Madam, this is the holy city! It is the Shabbat, both public and private that reminds us where we are and what type of life we are bidden to follow while being privileged to live here. The Shabbat will continue to protect Jerusalem just as Jerusalem will continue to protect the Shabbat.

4 The Soille Scene Celebrate San Diego! The History & Heritage of San Diego s Jewish Community. Go see the exhibition at the San Diego History Center in Balboa Park which chronicles the history of the Jewish Community in San Diego. Hebrew Day is represented a few times! Legacy Donor Appreciation Event by Joyce Arovas Thursday night, the Jewish Community Foundation held an inspiring event around the new exhibit at the San Diego History Center, The History & Heritage of San Diego s Jewish Community. I attended the event as did a number of our Legacy Circle members. Many people approached me and told me of their connection with Hebrew Day. Mr. Jerry Hermes told me his children attended Hebrew Day 30 years ago and his wife s aunt was our dear friend, Mrs. Edith Wiseman (z l). Mr. Victor Mizrachi s nieces and nephews attended Hebrew Day. The new President and CEO of the Jewish Community Foundation, Beth Sirull already heard that Rabbi Weiser leads great Lunch and Learn programs. Also in attendance were Dr. Dan and Emily Einhorn (this year s Gala honoree) and Honorary Co-Chair, Selwyn Isakow. Our school has been around for 54 years and continues to make an impact on the San Diego Jewish Community. Hebrew Day Alum Brings Robotics Team to Regional Championship Congratulations to Jacob Lerner (HDS Class of 2015) and his team for winning the Regional Championship at the San Diego Regional FIRST Robotics Competition! As a member of the Patrick Henry High School robotics team, The Patribots, Jacob and his team took home its first regional championship after a three-day long competition at The Del Mar Fairgrounds. This year s game, STEAMWORKS, challenged teams to work together in alliances to gather gears, collect fuel, and climb four feet high. As one of the Design Leads and Build Leads, Jacob and the team did the math as they designed, prototyped, and modified their robot s design. The robot stands 30 tall and can lift its 120 lbs four feet high by deploying its onboard winch. The Patribots will represent Patrick Henry High School in the 2017 For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST ) Robotics STEAMWORKSSM Championships. 4

7 The Soille Scene 7 The 7th graders took a trip to Balboa Park on Thursday. They started the day at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park where they got to experience the IMAX film Dream Big. With its inspiring stories of human grit and aspiration, Dream Big reveals the compassion and creativity that drive engineers to create better lives for people and a more sustainable future for us all. They were then given the opportunity to explore the science center, where they learned about physics and tried to solve a murder mystery. After lunch, the students headed over to look at all of the science fair projects that were accepted into the county competition. Their eyes were opened to all of the possibilities. It's never too early to start thinking about project ideas for next year!!

8 The Soille Scene Middle school math students celebrated Pi Day (3.14) early this year. They measured and calculated pi, played games, and of course ate pie! First grade is practicing adding U.S. coins by playing a game of "I have...who has...?" 8
