For Receiving Your Siddurim This week first graders took to the stage gleefully singing songs about Tefilah and eloquently speaking to their family members about important Jewish concepts learned this year. Grandparent Faye Snyder and special friend Mrs. Evelyn Rady presented a siddur to each of the accomplished first grade students. People from around the globe joined in the celebration by viewing live streaming video. What a special milestone occasion. A big Mazel Tov to Morah Stephie and her first grade students for this accomplishment! Thank you to her assistants and co-teachers Morah Giselle, Morah Noga and Morah Devon -, Mordy Estersohn who provided musical accompaniment and all the volunteer parents who helped make it such a wonderful celebration. 3 Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School Kolenu February 17, Shevat 5777 Parshat Yitro OVERVIEW: Parshat Yitro (Ex. 18:1 20:23) Hearing of the miracles G-d performed for Bnei Yisrael, Moshe's father-in-law Yitro arrives with Moshe's wife and sons, reuniting the family in the wilderness. Yitro is so impressed by Moshe's detailing of the Exodus from Egypt that he converts to Judaism. Seeing that the only judicial authority for the entire Jewish nation is Moshe himself, Yitro suggests that subsidiary judges be appointed to adjudicate smaller matters, leaving Moshe free to attend to larger issues. Moshe accepts his advice. Bnei Yisrael arrive at Mt. Sinai where G-d offers them the Torah. After they accept, G-d charges Moshe to instruct the people not to approach the mountain, and to prepare for three days. On the third day, amidst thunder and lightning, G-d's voice emanates from the smoke-enshrouded mountain and He speaks to the Jewish People, giving them the Ten Commandments: 1. Believe in G-d; 2. Don't worship other "G-ds"; 3. Don't use G-d's name in vain; 4. Observe Shabbat; 5. Honor your parents; 6. Don't murder; 7. Don't commit adultery; 8. Don't kidnap; 9. Don't testify falsely; 10. Don't covet. After receiving the first two commandments, the Jewish People, overwhelmed by this experience of the Divine, request that Moshe relay G-d's word to them. G-d instructs Moshe to caution the Jewish People regarding their responsibility to be faithful to the One who spoke to them. (C) 2017 Ohr Somayach International Drasha: The idea of a multilayered judicial system is advanced in this week's Torah reading by Yitro, the father-in-law of Moshe. As it appears in the Torah, Moshe originally envisioned himself as being the sole judge of the Jewish people and that all matters, great and petty, should be brought before him for judgment and decision. Yitro advises him that neither he nor the people would survive under such a system. The Jewish people by nature are argumentative and litigative. It is impossible for one human being to bear such a burden, by one's self. Therefore the result was that tens of thousands of judges and administrators were chosen to service the judicial needs of the people of Israel. Almost one sixth of the entire adult male population of the Jewish people at that time was engaged in a type of judicial civil service. Because of this inordinate ratio of judges to people, every ten Jews had their own local judge, so to speak. Even in later times when this ratio of judges to people was no longer maintained, it seems from the Mishna and the Talmud that there were many local courts present even in villages and towns of rather limited population. Resolving disputes and rendering justice was always seen as a basic requirement for any Jewish community, even for those that had a very small population base. In later times throughout the Exile the local rabbi served as the arbiter of disputes and the dispenser of justice, oftentimes suffering insult and injury thereby. A Jewish community that does not have some sort of court system based on Torah law is a complete rarity in the Jewish world. satisfactorily handle were brought to higher courts and eventually to the great Sanhedrin. In the desert of Sinai during most of their forty years of wandering, the Jewish people recognized Moshe, by himself, as being the great Sanhedrin. It was only at the end of his life and mission that Moshe created the great Sanhedrin of seventy elders. This court and system of justice persisted in Jewish life throughout First and Second Temple times and even for centuries after the destruction of the Second Temple. It only lapsed in about the fifth century of the Common Era when the ordination necessary to be a member of the Sanhedrin was no longer exercised and granted. There have been attempts in Jewish history to somehow renew that ordination and create a Sanhedrin to solve outstanding judicial and halachic issues. All such attempts have failed, none of them having been able to pass the test of time. Because of this lack of central authority that would be binding on all sections of Jewry, many difficult and basic issues are still unresolved in our time. It seems that we need another Yitro to step forward and suggest an approach to restore the essential judicial system that would operate for the benefit of all of Israel. Let us hope that such a bold and wisely charismatic person will yet emerge in our days. Shabbat shalom Rabbi Berel Wein Unresolved matters that the lower courts were not able to 3

7 Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School Kolenu February 17, Shevat 5777 Hebrew Day Staff Spotlight This week s Staff Spotlight: Lucy Narvaez Morah Lucy has worked with our Ladybugs (toddlers) for the past two years. She can usually be found in a quiet corner with four little ones doing an art project or reading a book. Lucy is a ballerina and modern dancer as well as a preschool teacher. The children gravitate toward her calm demeanor and warm smile. Her colleagues appreciate how easy-going and flexible she is and parents love her soft way with the children. Lucy is a beloved member of the Hebrew Day team! What is your role at Hebrew Day? My name is Lucy Narvaez and I'm a preschool assistant in the Ladybugs room. Tell us a little bit about your history such as where you grew up, brothers and sisters... I grew up in Vista North County San Diego and have five sisters. I'm 29 years old and was born in Tri- City Hospital. What/who made the most impact on you during your school years? Who made the most impact on me during my school years was the teacher for believing in me and pushing me to succeed. What are some of your talents, activities or hobbies that occupy your time when not at work? I have a nine year old son and expecting another child and love to spend quality time with my family from watching a movie, going to the park or going out for dinner. I have a passion for dance/ballet and love training to improve my techniques. Who is someone you look up to and why? I look up to my mom because even dealing with epilepsy and kidney failure she still keeps working hard and won't let this stop her from doing what she wants to do. What do you like most about working at Hebrew Day? I mostly enjoy working with the children at Hebrew Day School and learning more about the Jewish holidays and tradition. It's a blessing to work here. What does Jewish Learning for Successful Living mean to you? Jewish Learning for successful living mean to me is that this school really puts their heart into teaching these children not only to succeed but to live a happy and fulfilled life. Tell us about a moment you had a great impact on students during your time as a teacher. I have a happy moment when I see the children really engaging into what I'm trying to reach out to them and it shows me how they are developing and growing up too fast. It makes me want to continue to teach for a long time. 7
