1 Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School Paula Tannen Preschool October 30, 2015 Parsha Vayera 17 Cheshvan 5776 Light Candles 5:40 pm Be Our Guest! How do you make someone feel truly welcome into your home? Sometimes being kind requires a bit of thought and reflection: what can I do and say to put my guest at ease and show how happy I am for the visit? In the shade of our Tent of Abraham and Sarah this week our students confronted these important topics, all the while learning how to be more sensitive to one another and the value of speaking positively about others. We look forward to these boys and girls having tents of their own, welcoming Jewish homes which guests enjoy visiting and learning from. Change your Clocks! With the changing of the clocks this Sunday morning, next week Shabbat will begin at 4:34! Please be considerate to pick up your children on time next Friday and to reinforce our shared respect for Shabbat. Please also be understanding that teachers and staff will be less available than usual once dismissal takes place. 3 Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School Kolenu October 30, Cheshvan 5776 Parshat Vayera OVERVIEW: Parshat VaYera (Gen ) Three days after performing brit mila on himself, Avraham is visited by G-d. When three angels appear in human form, Avraham rushes to show them hospitality by bringing them into his tent, despite this being the most painful time after the operation. Sarah laughs when she hears from them that she will bear a son next year. G-d reveals to Avraham that He will destroy Sodom, and Avraham pleads for Sodom to be spared. G-d agrees that if there are fifty righteous people in Sodom He will not destroy it. Avraham "bargains" G-d down to ten righteous people. However, not even ten can be found. Lot, his wife and two daughters are rescued just before sulfur and fire rain down on Sodom and her sister cities. Lot's wife looks back and is turned into a pillar of salt. Lot's daughters fear that as a result of the destruction there will be no husbands for them. They decide to get their father drunk and through him to perpetuate the human race. From the elder daughter, Moav is born, and from the younger, Ammon. Avraham moves to Gerar where Avimelech abducts Sarah. After G-d appears to Avimelech in a dream, he releases Sarah and appeases Avraham. As promised, a son, Yitzchak, is born to Sarah and Avraham. On the eighth day after the birth, Avraham circumcises him as commanded. Avraham makes a feast the day Yitzchak is weaned. Sarah tells Avraham to banish Hagar and Hagar's son Yishmael because she sees in him signs of degeneracy. Avraham is distressed at the prospect of banishing his son, but G-d tells him to listen to whatever Sarah tells him to do. After nearly dying of thirst in the desert, Yishmael is rescued by an angel and G-d promises that he will be the progenitor of a mighty nation. Avimelech enters into an alliance with Avraham when he sees that G-d is with him. In a tenth and final test, G-d instructs Avraham to take Yitzchak, who is now 37, and to offer him as a sacrifice. Avraham does this, in spite of ostensibly aborting Jewish nationhood and contradicting his life-long preaching against human sacrifice. At the last moment, G-d sends an angel to stop Avraham. Because of Avraham's unquestioning obedience, G-d promises him that even if the Jewish People sin, they will never be completely dominated by their foes. The Parsha ends with the genealogy and birth of Rivka Ohr Somayach INSIGHTS: And G-d appeared to Avraham Although we might think that this connection between G-d and Avraham is in the nature of a singular, one-off event, it is clear that for Avraham and Sarah, the presence of G-d in their daily existence and even mundane behavior was a constant reality. It is not that G-d appears to him suddenly and unexpectedly on this hot, desert day, but rather Avraham sensed the Divine Presence in his life on a constant and permanent basis. In the house of our founding ancestors the presence of G-d was always an overriding factor that influenced their behavior and their worldview. Thus the opening words of this week's Torah reading describe for us a permanent feature of the house of Avraham and Sarah. In their hearts and minds, in their behavior and attitudes, they were always dealing with the presence and appearance of G-d. The Torah is describing for us the single, most vital attribute that made Avraham the father of all nations and, together with his wife Sarah, the parents of the Jewish people. Generations later, when dealing with the construction of the mishkan/tabernacle after the Exodus, the Torah is careful to point out to us that the L-rd, so to speak, intends to dwell not in a building but rather within the hearts and souls of the people of Israel. The goal of Judaism has always been to foster and cement a permanent relationship, one that is deeply felt and viscerally experienced, between the Creator and the created. One of the most characteristic features of Jewish life and society during the long centuries of exile and persecution has been the fact that even the simplest Jew, relatively unlearned and certainly not a talmudic scholar, nevertheless experienced this deep connection with G-d. Tevye, the poor and harried dairyman of Yiddish folklore, needs no intermediaries or appointments to speak to G-d. For him, as for millions of other Jews throughout history, G-d was a member of the family, always accessible, always a player in the events at hand. He was to be found in their homes and shops, their barns and fields; He was a permanent presence in their lives. In our more sophisticated milieu, G-d has become a much more distant and less familiar figure to us. We have relegated Him to the synagogue and the study hall and even then only for certain hours of the day or for certain circumstances in our lives. The rabbis taught us that there is a demand made upon us to emulate Avraham and Sarah in our own lives. That demand is not restricted only to behavior and actions but also to the recognition that the relationship we have with G-d is constant and omnipresent - wherever we are and whatever tasks in life occupy us. As we aspire to carry forward the rich spiritual legacy of generations past, this aspect of familiarity with the Divine Presence should grow within our homes as well. Shabat Shalom.. Rabbi Berel Wein

5 Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School Kolenu October 30, Cheshvan 5776 The Soille Scene With a little help from a turtle, Mrs. Donnelly's 4th graders are learning 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication! Did you forget to order your student s square art??? Don t worry! The company gave us an extension until Thursday Nov. 5th! Go to If you need your personal code, eworkman@hebrewday.org. A huge thank you to everyone who ordered! Inclusion and Friendship This year, the third grade students are working on inclusion and friendship. Part of this is a joint Judaicsecular program every Thursday called Shalom Secrets. Since the start of the year, the third graders have formed inclusion clubs, learned lessons on how to be good friends, and seen first-hand the value of working with others. To begin with, the students formed inclusion clubs where they picked a friendly name (Friendship Gummy Bears and Kindness Kids are just a couple of the group names). They then created weekly kindness tasks as membership dues. These tasks include saying five nice things to five different people, sharing supplies, and making cards for people who have birthdays. These tasks are membership dues that need to be completed and checked off in the students' "I'm a Work in Progress" books each week. This week, the students sat under the friendship tent and read lessons about kindness from their Shalom Secrets book. Then, they welcomed the kindergarteners into the tent and listened to a story about friendship from Morah Liat. Each week, the students are growing as individuals and really learning how to treat others on a day-to-day basis. 5
