The fifth graders at Soille Hebrew Day School just completed their 6th Judaic Milestone Event this week with their M & M presentation. Each year, these children have reached new thresholds of learning and accomplishments; their eyes have been opened to deeper understanding and an enriched existence in the world through each of the milestones from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Congratulations on these amazing achievements Afton Road San Diego, CA In This Issue: Calendar 2 Parshat Vayikra 3 The Soille Scene 4 Preschool Pages 8-9 Community News 10

3 Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School Kolenu March 31, Nisan 5777 Parshat Vayikra OVERVIEW: Parshat Vayikra (Leviticus 1:1 5:26) The Book of Vayikra (Leviticus), also known as Torat Kohanim - the Laws of the Priests - deals largely with the korbanot (offerings) brought in the Mishkan (Tent of Meeting). The first group of offerings is called korban olah, a burnt offering. The animal is brought to the Mishkan's entrance. For cattle, the one bringing the offering sets his hands on the animal. Afterwards it is slaughtered and the kohen sprinkles its blood on the altar. The animal is skinned and cut into pieces. The pieces are arranged, washed and burned on the altar. A similar process is described involving burnt offerings of other animals and birds. The various meal offerings are described. Part of the meal offering is burned on the altar, and the remaining part is eaten by the kohanim. Mixing leaven or honey into the offerings is prohibited. The peace offering, part of which is burnt on the altar and part is eaten, can be either from cattle, sheep or goats. The Torah prohibits eating blood or chelev (certain fats in animals). The offerings that atone for inadvertent sins committed by the Kohen Gadol, by the entire community, by the prince and by the average citizen are detailed. Laws of the guilt-offering, which atones for certain verbal transgressions and for transgressing laws of ritual purity, are listed. The meal offering for those who cannot afford the normal guilt offering, the offering to atone for misusing sanctified property, laws of the "questionable guilt" offering, and offerings for dishonesty are detailed. (C) 2017 Ohr Somayach International - All rights reserved. DRASHA: The Torah emphasizes in the opening words of this week s Torah reading that G-d, so to speak, called out to Moshe to instruct him in the laws and strictures of sacrifices in the Temple service. What is the significance of calling out which always implies doing so by name, such as by parents naming their child instead of the usual verses beginning that G-d, so to speak, spoke or addressed Moshe? The answer lies in the exclusive nature of the word vayikra. It denotes a personal message, a sense of privacy and intimacy between the caller and the one who is being called. One notices that this is the same word used in describing the Heavenly voice that called out to Moshe from the burning bush at the beginning of his eternal mission. It connotes a relationship between the parties, a sense of personal uniqueness, with the absence of any possibility of randomness in the encounter between the two. Closeness to Heaven, a relationship to G-d and eternity, lies at the heart of Jewish tradition. It is what makes one feel special about being a Jew, the elusive spiritual component that we all wish to capture and experience. We are reminded that simple faith is not so simple after all. To hear the Heavenly call, other noises in our lives have to be diminished. Heaven speaks to us in a small, still voice, in the sound of our parents and ancestors voices, in the intimacy of family and purpose. are required on a constant and even grinding basis one needs to feel a personal calling. Love for another human being is such a calling. It enables us to perform immense sacrifices without a whimper of complaint. Love is really the calling out of one person to another person. It is the reflection of the constant echo of G -d, so to speak, calling out to us in our earthly lives. That calling transcends time and space, physical presence and material goods. If left to our own base, selfish nature we can never get to the point of hearing and acting on our calling. We are left to be influenced by the thunderous noises that permeate our society and social environment. We must always strain to hear the still, small voice that speaks to us individually and personally. Rashi points out that the voice that Moshe heard could only be heard in the holy place of the Tabernacle/Mishkan. Only in striving to create a holy place in our home, our workplace, our family and our society will we be privileged to realize that Heaven is calling to us. Shabat shalom. Rabbi Berel Wein 2017 Rabbi Wein The idea of sacrifice is primarily exhibited and found in the entity of the family. The relationship in a marriage, of raising children, of honoring and caring for parents and others, all entail substantial personal sacrifice. For a person to feel noble and blessed in performing these sacrifices as most 3
4 Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School Kolenu March 24, Adar 5777 The Soille Scene Our 5th grade M&M (Makkot and Midrash) Fair was a great success! They have been working over the last month and a half researching a learning about the Ten Plagues and they presented it along with an exciting fair-type game which had a connection to their plague. And if you got enough tickets, you received M&Ms! There were so many types of fun games using balls, blindfolds, mazes, nerf darts etc. The whole project was an opportunity for them to develop their researching skills, use their creativity and artistic skills and collaborate with their partner. Parents and grandparents had such a fun learning experience with our 5th graders. Our 3rd and 4th graders were invited on Thursday to come join at our M&M Fair. They also had an amazing time. Great job to our 5th graders! We are so proud of all the Hebrew Day students that participated in the taekwondo tournament Sunday 26th. They all sparred with awesome courage and integrity. On our facebook page there is a video of the demonstration they put on for the parents, 7 schools, Grand Master and Master instructors and the Mayor of Lemon Grove. Congratulations to: Eitan and Avigail Freeman. Tammy and Jaimie Chaljon, Hank and David Kostrinsky, Asher and Elie Eliemberg, Daniel Hastings, Lorenzo Sansone, Liran Harosh and a special thanks to Aidin Weissler for assisting at the tournament. 4

6 Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School Kolenu March 24, Adar 5777 The Soille Scene During the month of Nissan (which started Tuesday), it is usual to see trees blossom. There is a special Bracha which is recited only once a year to praise Hashem for giving new life to the trees that had been bare throughout the winter. Everyone should say this Bracha and it is said standing next to blossoming fruit bearing trees. There are two posters (with the Bracha and explanation) up by a pomegranate tree in the preschool playground. Students have been coming by to say the Bracha and take advantage of this unique opportunity! Fourth grade playing long division games. We make learning fun! Gala Underwriting Event at Isakow home Gala Honorary Co-Chairs Selwyn and Hilary Isakow hosted a kickoff event in advance of the June 4th Gala. Amidst the backdrop of a beautiful La Jolla sunset, guests joined the Isakows and Emily Einhorn, our Gala honoree, for an inspirational evening. Selwyn Isakow (last year s Gala honoree) spoke about his respect and admiration for Rabbi Weiser and the school. Charlene Seidle (HDS alumna) spoke about the appreciation she has for the school for giving her a broad education and strong connection to Judaism. Said Isakow, Hebrew Day is a gem in our community! 6
