A Hope for the Future; Fieldtrip to Museum of Tolerance This past Tuesday, 42 middle school students traveled to Los Angeles together with 3 chaperones. The trip was filled with laughter, memories, but most importantly meaning. After studying the history of the Holocaust in school, these students had the privilege of touring the Museum of tolerance at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a museum center built on the idea and hope of educating others to a more tolerant and peaceful existence in the world. Some of our middle schoolers were lucky enough to be led around by a docent who attended the trial of Oskar Groening, an SS Sargeant who was the bookkeeper at Auschwitz, who was tried last year in Germany. As we began our tour we were shown a quote on the wall by Elie Wiesel, a famous Holocaust survivor, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and author. The quote read, "When you listen to a witness, you become a witness." Entering the halls, taking in all the images, information, and stories, that charge, to become a witness was evident on the intense faces of each child. The students were moved by the stories and history, which brought to light so many important lessons. The students expressed dismay and sadness at the amount of prejudice there is in the world and came to terms with the.continued on page Afton Road San Diego, CA Shown above is Jordena Leibowitz, docent to our girls on their trip to LA, who attended SS Sargeant Oskar Groeings trial in Germany in Elisha Klein found a picture of his great grandparents at the Museum of Tolerance. 3 Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School Kolenu April 1, Adar II 5776 Parshat Shemini OVERVIEW: Parshat Shemini (Lev. 9:1 11:47) On the eighth day of the dedication of the Mishkan, Aharon, his sons, and the entire nation bring various korbanot (offerings) as commanded by Moshe. Aharon and Moshe bless the nation. G-d allows the Jewish People to sense His Presence after they complete the Mishkan. Aharon's sons, Nadav and Avihu, innovate an offering not commanded by G-d. A fire comes from before G-d and consumes them, stressing the need to perform the commandments only as Moshe directs. Moshe consoles Aharon, who grieves in silence. Moshe directs the kohanim as to their behavior during the mourning period, and warns them that they must not drink intoxicating beverages before serving in the Mishkan. The Torah lists the two characteristics of a kosher animal: It has split hooves, and it chews, regurgitates, and re-chews its food. The Torah specifies by name those non-kosher animals that have only one of these two signs. A kosher fish has fins and easily removable scales. All birds not included in the list of forbidden families are permitted. The Torah forbids all types of insects except for four species of locusts. Details are given of the purification process after coming in contact with ritually impure species. BneiYisrael are commanded to be separate and holy - like G-d. (C) 2016 Ohr Somayach International DRASHA: The temptations of power are great. When one achieves notoriety, success and exalted public service there is always a danger that hubris and unnecessary behavior will take over. This is true even regarding great, noble and holy people. The adage that power corrupts has remained one of the truisms of all of human behavior throughout the ages. When the Torah describes the death of the two sons of Aaron because they substituted their own judgment for G- d's explicit commandment, we should not be overly surprised at the incident. Granted the privilege of the priesthood, a privilege that at that time was restricted to only five individuals, Nadav and Avihu followed their natural human instinct to improve on G-d's word and to fashion a service more in line with their own desires and values. As the Torah points out to us, their sin was that they brought a strange fire on G-d's altar, which they were not commanded to do. The age-old question of whether the Temple service, and in our times the prayer service, is meant to fashion G-d or humans is brought into sharp focus by the events described in this week's Torah reading. In bringing this strange fire on G-d's altar, Nadav and Avihu may have thought that they were making the service in the Mishkan/Tabernacle more attractive and appealing. The nature of humans always is that we second-guess our Creator, mostly to our detriment if not even disaster. Judaism has always found itself in constant struggle and tension regarding the nature of its ordained, ritual service on one hand and its relevance and appeal to the masses of Jews on the other. This is certainly true in our time with the pressures of modernity, rapidly changing social mores and conventional correctness. Traditional Judaism has always been wary of change, especially sudden, culturally driven radical change to its prayer structure and value system. It is obvious to all that over the centuries the modes of prayer service that have evolved would enable a Jew of the eleventh century, were he to be alive today, to recognize the basic prayer structure, but he would certainly notice changes in content and form that developed in the Jewish world over the past millennia. The decisions to accept, modify or reject any changes in the prayer service lay not so much in the hands of the rabbinic scholars as it did in the general consensus of the masses of Jews who prayed daily in the synagogues. This is certainly true regarding the changes in prayer content, form and behavior brought about by the rise of the Chasidic movement in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. However, all adjustments and changes were always within the framework of halacha and never meant to be a departure from tradition and/or a new Judaism. The motivation for all of the current discussion regarding prayer services, women's issues and other societal factors should be closely examined. We should never again make the mistake that the Torah records for us in this week's reading regarding the sons of Aaron. Shabat shalom. Rabbi Berel Wein

4 Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School Kolenu April 1, Adar II 5776 The Soille Scene Isaac Broudy Wins San Diego Zoo Global Award Isaac Broudy attended an award ceremony for the San Diego Zoo Global Award he won at the San Diego County Science and Engineering Fair. He was one of 2 junior division winners, along with 2 senior division winners. The zoo honored the students at a ceremony on Tuesday night, where they presented their work to community members and zoo scientists. Isaac did great and represented Soille with pride! Congratulations! A Walk through the Past... A Hope for the Future (Continued from front page) prejudice they possess. They expressed shock about stories and information they were exposed to about the Holocaust. Some were shocked by the amount of media bias out there. Others didn't realize the extent that people revolted. They assumed everyone lost hope. But then there were those that found it comforting to hear stories of faith and bravery even in their final moments of life. To end our experience the students were privileged to listen to a Holocaust survivor. Mr. Amram Deutsch was a Romanian Jew who was one of eleven children. He was 17 when the Nazis finally reached his hometown. Amongst all of his stories, perhaps the part that spoke mostly to our students was when he described what he missed out on. He told the children that his Jewish education was stolen from him and with that his identity. He expressed that every morning he wakes up at 5 AM to study Torah so he can try and get back the Jewish education that was taken from him. As he recounted these ideas he told the students that they should cherish their Jewish education for it is what is most precious and will give them an identity, which is something no one can take from them. As we left the museum, an air of unity and pride was felt by the students of Soille. Heading then to dinner and Munchies candy shop, we ended the day with a sense of levity and purpose, so apropos as we finish up the month of Adar, happiness, and head into the month of redemption, Nissan, next week! We thank the Lou Dunst Foundation Fund, for their transportation grant. 4

5 Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School Kolenu April 1, Adar II 5776 The Soille Scene Huskies Vs Encinitas It was a typical sunny day in San Diego. The girls team played with all their heart. Nothing was left on the court. There was sweat, broken fingernails, smeared mascara and even hair got messed up. The girls showed courage and made this a day to go down in history. The memory of the last game still lingered in their mouths like sour milk. They lost by one point with a missed final shot. Will those memories haunt them today. Led by a "tenacious D" and an unlikely hero of a daughter father combination. What? fathers are not allowed to play, you may ask. We will get back to that a little later. The first half was going well, score tied at five with some razzle dazzle play by the girls. And a strong rebounding effort. The girl were running pick and rolls and high screens. But then Encinitas ran off a couple of buckets and put our girls down 15-7 going into the half. After a spirited halftime speech by Coach Cox and Ray drawing up some great plays, the girls were faced with a challenge of epic proportions. With a HUGE defensive effort the girls stopped the other team from scoring during the second half. However, with a minute to go we were still down by 4. Gooey W. bought the ball down the court after passing back and forth twice to Hadassah. She found her sister Kayla open for a shot that went in putting them down by 2. After a quick defensive turnover we bought the ball down again, with time ticking down and Ray calling out five four three, there were three missed shots by our girls. The ball was pulled down for a rebound by Kayla W. and as Ray called out one she throws up the ball and it goes in. The girls go crazy, BUT the ref says the time ran out. They were dejected and about to walk off the court, until the official ESPN sideline video taker ( Dr Philip Wrotslavsky) ran out on the court and showed the ref the video, which conclusively showed the ball was in the air before the buzzer. The ref counted the shot! The crowd went crazy. They played double overtime at which the score remained tied. The game was called as a tie. It was a Victorious tie. Kudos to all the girls and to Ms. Cox and Ray. ~Reporting from San Diego Huskies outdoor arena P. Wrotslavsky. 5
