3 Parshat Ti Kisa OVERVIEW: Ki Tisa (Ex. 30:11 34:35) Moshe conducts a census by counting each silver half-shekel donated by all men age twenty and over. Moshe is commanded to make a copper laver for the Mishkan. The women donate the necessary metal. The formula of the anointing oil is specified, and G-d instructs Moshe to use this oil only for dedicating the Mishkan, its vessels, Aharon and his sons. G-d selects Bezalel and Oholiav as master craftsmen for the Mishkan and its vessels. The Jewish People are commanded to keep the Sabbath as an eternal sign that G-d made the world. Moshe receives the two Tablets of Testimony on which are written the Ten Commandments. The mixed multitude who left Egypt with the Jewish People panic when Moshe's descent seems delayed, and force Aharon to make a golden calf for them to worship. Aharon stalls, trying to delay them. G-d tells Moshe to return to the people immediately, threatening to destroy everyone and build a new nation from Moshe. When Moshe sees the camp of idol-worship he smashes the tablets and he destroys the golden calf. The sons of Levi volunteer to punish the transgressors, executing 3,000 men. Moshe ascends the mountain to pray for forgiveness for the people, and G-d accepts his prayer. Moshe sets up the Mishkan and G-d's cloud of glory returns. Moshe asks G-d to show him the rules by which he conducts the world, but is granted only a small portion of this request. G-d tells Moshe to hew new tablets and reveals to him the text of the prayer that will invoke Divine mercy. Idol worship, intermarriage and the combination of milk and meat are prohibited. The laws of Pesach, the first-born, the firstfruits, Shabbat, Shavuot and Succot are taught. When Moshe descends with the second set of tablets, his face is luminous as a result of contact with the Divine. (C) 2017 Ohr Somayach International DRASHA: One of the most important, albeit only subtly presented, messages in this week s Torah reading is recognition of the enormous influence that current culture fads and beliefs have upon society. I do not believe that there is any other way for us to review the events of the creation and the worship of the Golden Calf by the Jewish people. Amazing in its brazenness and brainlessness, a people witness to a plethora of miracles and G-dly revelation itself, in a moment of crisis, resorts to paganism and idolatry in response to fear of abandonment. The very idea of worshiping images and statues as though they had life and powers is completely foreign to our society. It is not part of our current culture and by simply applying basic logic, we are able to see it for the empty falsehood that it is. However, were we to live in a culture of paganism and idolatry as did our ancestors when they left Egypt there is no doubt that the Golden Calf could and would speak to us, and enlist our thoughtful consideration, if not even our allegiance. The Talmud tells us that Menashe, a king of Judah in First Temple times, when in a dream, was questioned by a leading rabbi who lived many centuries after the death of the king as to how he could believe and worship statues and idols. Menashe responded: Had you lived in my generation you also would have raised your garment in order to run more quickly to worship those statues and idols. Menashe was a creature of his times and a captive of its prevailing culture. The rabbi who questioned him had other cultural challenges but could no longer relate to the culture that prevailed when Menashe was the king of Judah. We see many cultural battles on challenges that are present in today s current Jewish world. These cultural battles raise passionate feelings on both sides of the questions that they raise. Nevertheless, I feel that even a few generations from now our descendants will look back at these cultural challenges and battles in amazement and wonder. They will say about us what we say about the generation that created the Golden Calf How could they have been so wrong? The answer to that lies in the recognition of the enormous influence that the prevailing culture plays in our lives and thoughts. The culture of liberalism, tolerance for wickedness and basic immoral behavior has so corroded our judgment and our view of the purpose of our lives that we see everything through a distorted mirror. Jewish survival, moral growth and the preservation of the Jewish people and the Jewish State are the actions that should dominate our thoughts and behavior. Passing fads, which so occupy our current media, will be obsolete as we move on to newer fads and a different type of culture. The Torah attempted and attempts to raise us above temporary, passing fads. Only by constructing a moral context rooted in a traditional lifestyle based on Jewish core values and Torah principles will we be spared the mockery of later generations. Certainly when it comes to instructing our children, who will live beyond us and within a future, as yet undefined culture, must we push aside the surface smoke and mirrors which define current mores, and connect them to a value system which they can carry within them, and which will be of benefit for them. Shabbat shalom. Rabbi Berel Wein

5 The Soille Scene 5 The 7th graders took a trip to Balboa Park on Thursday. They started the day at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park where they got to experience the IMAX film Dream Big. With its inspiring stories of human grit and aspiration, Dream Big reveals the compassion and creativity that drive engineers to create better lives for people and a more sustainable future for us all. They were then given the opportunity to explore the science center, where they learned about physics and tried to solve a murder mystery. After lunch, the students headed over to look at all of the science fair projects that were accepted into the county competition. Their eyes were opened to all of the possibilities. It's never too early to start thinking about project ideas for next year!!
6 The Soille Scene Middle school math students celebrated Pi Day (3.14) early this year. They measured and calculated pi, played games, and of course ate pie! First grade is practicing adding U.S. coins by playing a game of "I have...who has...?" 6
