3 FROM THE RABBI S DESK Among the truly sweet things about the New Year are the heartwarming greetings and salutations being exchanged everywhere. It is heartening to have our mailboxes filled with Rosh Hashana cards, our inboxes filled with Rosh Hashana s, and our Facebook timelines filled with Rosh Hashana wishes and blessings, even if they are not as personal and direct as when offered face to face. Using Subtlety in our Rosh Hashana Greetings The typical greeting includes a prayer that the year ahead be better than the previous one and that, in the words of our Rabbis, tichle ha shana v kileloseha, may the past year and its misfortune be behind us. Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt l makes a critically important point. While there are aspects and events of the past year for each of us that we wish didn t happen, it is simply ungrateful and unappreciative to the Almighty to suggest in the slightest that there was nothing good about the previous year. Instead, he suggests, we should be careful in our greeting to specifically thank Hashem for the blessings of the past year and only then pray that the year ahead be even better. Rav Shlomo Zalman s insight is subtle, but yet so important in reminding us that while Rosh Hashana is a time to identify what went wrong the previous year and look ahead to a wonderful year to come, it is also a time to recognize the goodness and kindness Hashem has shown us and express our endless gratitude for it. With that in mind, I want to thank the Ribono Shel Olam for all the kindness He has shown us this past year and wish all of us a year ahead of even greater heath, happiness, prosperity, personal growth, and peace in our homes, Israel and around the world. Moshe commenced this poetic discourse to the people by invoking the heavens and the earth as eternal witnesses to his warnings. Moshe ascends Mt. Nevo. After completing this address, Moshe was told to ascend Mt. Nevo so that he would be able to see the Promised Land before he dies. BOCA RATON SYNAGOGUE DERECH ERETZ STATEMENT In the spirit of our mission Valuing Diversity and Celebrating Unity, we believe that a community is built on the collective engagement of individuals representing differing perspectives, whether religious, political, or social. As is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L Shem Shamayim, for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we. Derech Eretz, good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a safe place for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the. In line with our recently published Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive towards others and create an even better community. Please remember to shut off the ringtones on your cell phone when entering the building for Minyanim. Whenever a class is in session in the ; please refrain from walking through or into the. Please refrain from parking on the swales on Montoya Circle; it causes damage to those areas. Use the overflow parking area instead. Michael & Merna Matilsky, Gene & Georgina Rice, Michael & Jill Rose, Daniel & Yael Toledano.. MACHZORIM FOR HIGH HOLIDAYS We highly encourage everyone to bring their own Machzor to Shul for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, as we do not have enough to service the entire community. Please make sure to put your name on the inside. HIGH HOLIDAY FAMILY MINYAN Due to the tremendous growth of the shul, we have changed the Teen Minyan to a Family Minyan. The Minyan is still being predominately attended by Teens and will be led in a similar fashion to our Shabbat Morning Teen Minyan. The Family Minyan will not be held on the first or second night of Rosh Hashana or for Neilah. These services will be taking place at the Montoya Estates Clubhouse. Please note that the Family Minyan will be saying Yizkor on Yom Kippur. The Shul does not have enough Artscroll Machzorim to accommodate everyone for the High Holidays, we highly encourage everyone to bring their own machzorim, and to put your name in it. We thank our Anonymous sponsor for ensuring there will be a Kiddush both days of Rosh Hashana and Michael & Esther Lupin for co-sponsoring the Kiddush on the Second Day of Rosh Hashana. For more information about this minyan, please Rabbi Eli Zians at rez@brsonline.org. MEN S MIKVAH Private appointments are available for the Men s Mikvah on Erev Yom Kippur from 6:00 am through 10:45 am. The cost is $50 per private appointment. IMPORTANT: HIGH HOLIDAY BABYSITTING LIMITED SPACE AVAILABLE In order to provide a safe and secure environment for our children we have had to close the High Holiday Babysitting for both days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Day due to the space restrictions. We still have space for the Shabbat Shuva Derasha, Kol Nidrei, and Neilah. Please understand that we will not be able to accommodate any walk-ins. We apologize in advance for all requests that we will not be able to accommodate. We are looking forward to wonderful and meaningful High Holidays. Hospital Tip. *The best Bikur Cholim visits are the shortest. A good rule of thumb-the sicker the patient, the shorter the visit. This is especially true of critical care areas (ICUs, SICUs) where the presence of visitors often impacts the ability to provide necessary medical and nursing care. In a nutshell, never overstay your welcome. COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS COMMUNITY WIDE FOOD DRIVE BRS is participating in the FEED MY COMMUNITY food drive that is being sponsored by Jewish Family Services. 8 ISRAEL UPDATE SOCIAL ACTION 5774 was a year filled with challenges, which the Jewish people faced with unity and resolve. The kidnapping of three Israeli teenagers, who were then brutally murdered, proved, at least for a short period of time, that Am Yisrael Chai; we are all part of a true family. Jews from all over the world and every walk of life united in prayer and in efforts to Bring Back Our Boys. Operation Protective Edge uncovered a large number of underground tunnels built by Hamas with the intention of kidnapping Jews and wreaking havoc at kindergartens, schools, hospitals and civic centers. Israeli ingenuity together with American financing produced the Iron Dome, which served to protect Israelis from barrages of enemy rocket attacks. Unfortunately, the rate of intermarriage continued to increase both in Europe (80%) and America (60%). But, Israel s population grew by nearly 200,000 in the past 12 months and now stands at 8,904,373. The figures include 24,801 new immigrants whom Israel welcomed in the past 12 months, and more than 176,000 new babies were born, according to the Ministry of Population and Immigration. May 5775 be a year of peace, continued growth, and unity. K Tiva V Chatima Tova PLEASE KEEP IN YOUR PRAYERS ALAN GROSS Alan Gross has been in prison for over 1400 days. Now you are able to write to him via his website Aba Chonah ben Hava Chana - Alan Gross American Jew Alan Gross has been wrongly held in a Cuban prison since December Since that time, Alan s physical and emotional state has deteriorated. He has lost over one hundred pounds and has suffered partial paralysis. Join us to call upon the Cuban government and the international community for the immediate release of Alan on humanitarian grounds. Jonathan Pollard has been imprisoned in the United States since While working as an American civilian intelligence analyst, Pollard has admitted to passing classified information to Israel. Although even his most ardent supporters agree that he was in the wrong and guilty, the nature and length of his imprisonment is disproportionate and unparalleled. Join a multitude of prominent politicians, officials from the national intelligence world, and the legal world who have called for Pollard s sentence to be commuted.
