2 FROM THE RABBI S DESK Don t Put Off Having the Talk When I was a kid, the most difficult and awkward conversation between parents and children was the talk about the birds and the bees. Due to the Internet, increasingly graphic pop culture and explicit billboards and ads, today s children can be considered precocious in this area and likely know a great deal about the topic before the talk ever even occurs. Instead, the most difficult talk today between parents and children is one that is unfortunately not taking place enough. While the world is generally a safe place and the people our children are exposed to are almost always appropriate and safe, sadly the threat of abuse is real. Research has consistently shown that the most important and effective tool to protect our children is education. As loving and trusted parents, we have the capacity to safeguard our children, but it means having a difficult and uncomfortable conversation. Rabbi Yakov Horowitz, a respected voice on the topic of child safety education, identifies four points to communicate to our children in order to empower them to protect themselves and to transform them into difficult targets for predators. 1. No secrets from parents In a non-anxious, calm conversation we must remind our children that we love them beyond words and that they can feel confident confiding in us about absolutely anything. We must make them recognize that we take them seriously, we will honor their concerns and fears, and we will always do everything in our power to serve their best interests. 2. Your body belongs to you It is crucial for children to understand the concept of personal space and that our bodies belong to us, and us alone. Our private parts are ours and absolutely nobody, not a friend, family member, or person in any position of authority can have access to them. 3. Good touch/bad touch Not every touch is bad and qualifies as abuse. However, there is touch that is categorically wrong and should set off an alarm for our children. They must understand the difference so that they can be aware and respond appropriately. 4. No one should make you feel uncomfortable Lastly, we must communicate to our children that no one should make them feel uncomfortable. If they do, they have a right to walk away and tell someone they trust. Too many parents are avoiding this talk because they think they will introduce their children to a topic that will make them fear adults and worry excessively. However, the experts explain that rather than fear adults, children will feel safer knowing they can trust their parents and they will feel empowered to protect themselves going forward. While it is never comfortable to broach this subject, good opportunities for bringing it up can be bath times for young children, clothes shopping for older children, or at the time of a doctor s appointment. Should God forbid an issue arise, the best way to respond to our children is to tell them that we believe them and that we will react swiftly and appropriately. Halacha (Jewish law) is clear that safety concerns must be reported to the appropriate authorities and all mandated reporting laws must be observed. Remaining silent, covering up, or excusing inexcusable behavior leaves other children vulnerable to abuse and trauma that will haunt them their entire lives and do what can be irreparable damage. With our children off from school, many of them heading off to camp and others having more leisure time roaming the neighborhood, there is no better time to rededicate ourselves to best practices for safety for our family and community in general. Review stranger danger. Have proper and working smoke detectors & carbon monoxide detectors in appropriate locations (If anyone cannot afford them, please contact me). Lock the doors to your car and home, no matter how safe you feel. Make sure your pool fence is sturdy and closed. Don t let children swim unsupervised or alone. Be vigilant with reviewing with your children where they are going, what they are doing, who is driving them, who else will be there, what movie they are seeing, etc. May our children remain safe and may Hashem grant us the courage and strength to be vigilant in protecting them. Good Shabbos, Rabbi Efrem Goldberg Subscribe to receive the Rabbi's blog via at rabbisblog.brsonline.org Page 2

As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L Shem Shamayim, for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we. Derech Eretz, good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a safe place for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue. In line with our Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. We learn from differing opinions and diverse sources of information. In arriving at our opinions, we should be open to listening to a broad range of perspectives, even those with which we may ultimately disagree.. Please refrain from interpersonal conversations in the sanctuary during davening, so as not to disturb the sanctity of others' conversations with the Almighty. If you must have a conversation at that time, please feel free to use other areas of the Shul, including the hall and Social Hall. All of these Mensch Messages have been submitted to the office. If you have a Mensch Message you would like us to promote, please us at office@brsonline.org Page 3

7 ISRAEL UPDATE SOCIAL ACTION In honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem The U.S. Senate voted unanimously on a measure marking the 50th year of the reunification of Jerusalem and calling on President Donald Trump to abide by the 1995 law mandating the relocation of the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The resolution states in part, Jerusalem should be recognized as the capital of the State of Israel and a united city in which all religious faiths are respected and protected. Jerusalem is a holy city and the home for people of the Jewish, Muslim and Christian faiths. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, chief sponsor of the resolution, said in a statement, While we know that Israel continues to face a number of threats, bipartisan passage of this resolution will serve as yet another indication of the United States commitment to standing by our Israeli friends. The Czech Chamber of Deputies called on the government to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and to stop paying dues to UNESCO, the cultural organization of the United Nations, as long as it continued its anti-israel bias. In early May, UNESCO passed a resolution denying Israel s claims over Jerusalem. Last year, UNESCO passed two resolutions denying the Jewish connection to the Temple Mount. He first noted, that our overarching goal should indeed be to take care of as many people as possible and we should make conscious choices that promote that ideal. In acute settings or when faced with limited resources, Halakhah must contend with two conflicting principles - do we maximize the number of mitzvot performed (defined by saving as many people as possible) or maximize the quality of individual mitzvot (prioritizing the hopes of a full recovery, even at the expense of saving fewer people). Rabbi Bleich argued that Halakhah prefers the second approach. Parshah Thought Rashi wonders why the story of Miriam speaking lashon ha-ra about Moshe is juxtaposed to the story of the Meraglim (in next week s Parshah) and answers that the Meraglim should have learned the seriousness of lashon ha-ra from Miriam and not have spoken ill of the Land of Israel. Many of the supercommentaries challenge the premise of the question. Perhaps the stories are juxtaposed because they occurred one after another, with no particular thematic connection. What then is Rashi really asking? Tiferet Yehonatan explains that Rashi means to ask, Why did Bnei Yisrael wait until now to send the Meraglim? He explains that Bnei Yisrael were indeed concerned that the Meraglim might in fact speak ill of the Land of Israel and were therefore hesitant to send them altogether. However, after everybody witnessed the severity of the punishment for lashon hara that Miriam suffered, Bnei Yisrael were confident that the Meraglim would take this message to heart. After the story of Miriam, Bnei Yisrael were willing to send Meraglim because they were confident in receiving an accurate and faithful report. The Meraglim however, failed this very test. The idea that the Torah is perhaps trying to teach us is that there are lessons for each of us to learn from that which occurs around us. Hashem may arrange for us to witness particular events to be able to learn from and grow from them. Perhaps the sin of the Meraglim is considered so very great - even beyond mere lashon ha-ra - is because they seemingly denied Hashem s hand and intention in the everyday occurrences around them. Second Annual Medical Halakhah Seminar Thank you to our more than 60 participants who joined us this past Sunday to learn from one of the foremost experts in the field!
