2 Kiddish Sat Sept 15: Today s Kiddish was sponsored by the shul. Rabbi Banon s Class: There will be no Rabbi s weekly class, until after the holidays. Unveiling: There will be an unveiling for Charlene Burak s mother, the late Ethel Turner, Z L tomorrow Sunday, September 16th at 11:00 AM at the YIC cemetery in Duvernay. Everyone is invited to show their respect to the Buraks, and a YASHIR KOACH to Fred, who has diligently shown up in shul for the past few months to say Kaddish for his mother-in-law. Unveiling: There will also be an unveiling next Sunday Sept 23 at 11:00 AM for the late Perry (Peretz) Silverman, who passed away last April. The unveiling will take place at Adath Israel Poale Zedek Anshei Ozeroff Congregation Cemetery, Anshei Ozeroff Section, de la Savane, at the first entrance from Victoria. Perry was a devoted family man, and married to Marilyn for fifty-five years. Perry was a founding member of the Young Israel of Chomedey, and throughout his life, he was devoted to his synagogue, as well as playing a pivotal role in the development and growth of our proud community. All YIC members are asked to pay their respects to the Silverman Family, and do their best to attend the unveiling. Birthdays: a) MAZAL TOV to the Rudys whose grandson in Israel, Yehuda turns 11 on Thursday the 20th; b) MAZAL TOV also to Diane Bresinger whose birthday is on Tuesday Sept. 18, Erev Yom Kippur. Simchat Torah: On Monday evening Oct 1, everyone is invited to attend EREV SIMCHAT TORAH SERVICES and HAKKAFOT at 5:45 PM. The shul is sponsoring a FREE HIGH KIDDISH, so please come and help make this a super SIMCHAT TORAH!!!! It is imperative that you call the office and advise how many in your family will participate so we place our order with the caterer accordingly. On Friday morning, Oct 2, SIMCHAT TORAH, Sha ar Shalom will be joining us for morning services and HAKKAFOT at 9:00 AM, and a SIMCHAT TORAH brunch following. Again, all are invited to attend. Mazal Tov: This month marks 50 years that Simmy and Beryl Grabina became members of the YIC. Being a young couple, they started off in the auxiliary service downstairs, not being able to afford the upstairs fee, but nevertheless, they felt right at home. Their son was Bar-Mitzvahed in 1989 with Rabbi Spiro. Today, Simmy can always be counted on for a Minyan, and is a regular Minyannaire every Monday morning. If he is not in Ottawa with his own family, then every Shabbat he is in shul with his YIC family, and is also a regular at the Rabbi s classes. Today, 50 years later, the YIC is still their second home. On a personal note, Beryl adds... the shul looks beautiful the people involved in turning a cold unwelcoming room into a warm sanctuary are to be commended. congratulations on a job well done. CONGRATULATIONS and MAZAL TOV to the Grabinas, and our wishes go out for both of them to be healthy, and enjoy our shul for many many years to come.

3 Elections: Please note that Quebec elections this year take place on Oct 1, which is SHMINI ATZERET, a holiday on which we cannot go out and vote. You can, however, vote on Friday Sept 21; Sunday Sept 23; Wednesday Sept 26; and Thursday Sept 27, all of which are week days or on Chol Hamoed Sukkot. The times differ each day; so do the riding office addresses. Please remember you cannot vote if your name is not on the electoral list. By now you should have receieved a postcard informing you of your eligibility to vote. You can also check if your name is on the list by going to check. You will be asked to enter your name, birthday, civic number and postal code, after which will appear a page giving you the riding addresses for each day, and the hours that you can vote. Make sure the information you enter is exact. Ladies - you may have to enter either your maiden name or married name, depending upon how you are registered on the electoral list. If you get a negative reaction, that means you are NOT on the list, in which case you have to go down to the riding office with proof of ID, and you will be looked after. Please make every effort to vote on the various pre-election dates which will be publicized in your riding. Refuah Shlemah: a) A REFUAH SHLEMA to Bella Green, who is in the hospital and still undergoing various tests to determine the cause of her continuous pain, b) a REFUAH SHLEMA to Renee Greenstein, long-time member whose late husband was president of YIC who will be undergoing surgery on Oct 24th; c) Bella Borts Silverman (wife on the late Marty Choran) is back in the hospital - She is at La Cite de Sante in Laval, we wish her a REFUAH SHLEMA; d) and a REFUAH SHLEMA to Bernie Peroff who is undergoing surgery this Monday for cataracts; e) And of course a REFUAH SHLEMA to all members who are facing health issues. 5 PARSHAT HASHAVUA - WEEKLY TORAH PORTION The Parshah in a Nutshell Parshat Ha Azinu Deuteronomy 32:1 52 The greater part of the Torah reading of Haazinu ( Listen In ) consists of a 70-line song delivered by Moses to the people of Israel on the last day of his earthly life. Calling heaven and earth as witnesses, Moses exhorts the people, Remember the days of old / Consider the years of many generations / Ask your father, and he will recount it to you / Your elders, and they will tell you how G d found them in a desert land, made them a people, chose them as His own, and bequeathed them a bountiful land. The song also warns against the pitfalls of plenty Yeshurun grew fat and kicked / You have grown fat, thick and rotund / He forsook G d who made him / And spurned the Rock of his salvation and the terrible calamities that would result, which Moses describes as G d hiding His face. Yet in the end, he promises, G d will avenge the blood of His servants, and be reconciled with His people and land. The Parshah concludes with G d s instruction to Moses to ascend the summit of Mount Nebo, from which he will behold the Promised Land before dying on the mountain. For you shall see the land opposite you; but you shall not go there, into the land which I give to the children of Israel.
