2 FROM THE RABBI S DESK TWO WAYS TO LIVE LIFE WHICH BEST DESCRIBES YOU? Page 2 In 1966 Time magazine ran a now-famous cover story asking: Is God Dead? Nearly 50 years later, a Wall Street Journal article entitled, Science Increasingly Makes the Case for God records: The fine-tuning necessary for life to exist on a planet is nothing compared with the finetuning required for the universe to exist at all. For example, astrophysicists now know that the values of the four fundamental forces gravity, the electromagnetic force, and the strong and weak nuclear forces were determined less than one millionth of a second after the big bang. Alter any one value and the universe could not exist. For instance, if the ratio between the nuclear strong force and the electromagnetic force had been off by the tiniest fraction of the tiniest fraction by even one part in 100,000,000,000,000,000 then no stars could have ever formed at all Fred Hoyle, the astronomer who coined the term big bang, said that his atheism was greatly shaken at these developments. He later wrote that a common-sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a super-intellect has monkeyed with the physics, as well as with chemistry and biology.... The numbers one calculates from the facts seem to me so overwhelming as to put this conclusion almost beyond question. Even science now realizes that the Universe proclaims testimony to God, making the only question whether we are listening. Our Parsha begins by describing how Balak saw all that the Jewish people had done to the Emori and his response was to become very frightened. We have another Parsha named for a non-jew who is described as experiencing through a different one of the senses. Vayar Balak, Balak saw, and Va yishma Yisro, Yisro heard. Not only are they described as employing different senses, but their reactions are completely opposite to one another. Yisro saw the hand of God guiding the Jewish destiny and was moved to join them on their journey. Balak saw what Yisro had heard, but he had the opposite reaction. He didn t see the hand of God, he saw a strong Jewish people and set out to eliminate them. Two people looking at the same phenomenon and story. One sees Hashem and the other sees nothing. We have a choice to be like Yisro or like Balak. We can live our lives looking for the hand of the Almighty or we can peer out and see nothing. When Bilaam is recruited by Balak to curse the Jews and he is traveling on that mission, his donkey suddenly stops when seeing an angel. Bilaam doesn t see the angel and so he strikes the donkey. When Bilaam finally sees the angel he says, chatasi ki lo yadati ki atah nitzav likrasi ba derech, forgive me for my sin for I did not know you were there. The Seforno and Shelah wonder, why does Bilaam say chatasi? What cheit, what sin did he violate, if in fact he simply didn t see the angel? They answer that the sin was not having looked at what was right in front of him, not seeing beneath the surface. We each are recipients of incredible blessings daily in our lives. Hashem is orchestrating things from above. Yesterday, literally and figuratively, we prayed with all of our hearts for good health or livelihood or many other things. Then, we get what we prayed for and often forget that they come from Hashem because we are distracted by praying for tomorrow s blessings. We need to pause to recognize that today s blessings are the result of yesterday s prayers and we owe a huge expression of gratitude and of thanks for the hand of Hashem in our lives. But it is not only when things are going our way and are what we prayed for that we should see the hand of Hashem. Rashi describes the angel that blocks Bilaam s path as Mal ach shel rachamim haya v haya rotzeh l man o mi lachto, he was an angel of compassion and he was blocking the path to prevent Bilaam from making a mistake. When our path seems blocked or we run into an obstruction, that, too, is an angel or the hand of Hashem acting for our benefit, even when we don t understand it. Albert Einstein said, There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle. God is calling all around us. You can look like Balak or you can listen like Yisro, the choice is up to you. Good Shabbos, Rabbi Efrem Goldberg Subscribe to receive the Rabbi's blog via at rabbisblog.brsonline.org

3 BRS YOUNG LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE PRESENTS NETWORKING, PROFESSIONAL INSPIRATION AND WINE TASTING Wednesday, July 25, :00 PM - 9:30PM in the BRS Sephardic Beit Midrash 8:00 PM - 8:45 PM Networking and Wine Tas ng 8:45 PM - 9:30 PM Murray Goldberg: Career Successes RSVP via Facebook (YLC FB Page) Thank you to the Grove for sponsoring the Wine Tasting Evening sponsored by TD Bank BOCA RATON SYNAGOGUE DERECH ERETZ STATEMENT In the spirit of our mission Valuing Diversity and Celebrating Unity, we believe that a community is built on the collective engagement of individuals representing differing perspectives, whether religious, political, or social. As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L Shem Shamayim, for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we. Page 3 Derech Eretz, good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a safe place for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue.

8 ISRAEL UPDATE SOCIAL ACTION The United States has quietly frozen its aid to the Palestinian Authority pending review. The move comes two months after Congress passed the Taylor Force Act, which aimed to force the PA to terminate its policies of paying stipends to convicted terrorists in Israeli jails and to the families of dead terrorists. The Taylor Force Act was was named for the US army veteran who was murdered by a Palestinian terrorist in March 2016, in an attack that injured eleven people. The act orders that US assistance to the West Bank and Gaza that directly benefits the PA be suspended unless the Secretary of State certifies that the Palestinian Authority has met four conditions: terminating these payments to terrorists, revoking laws authorizing this compensation, taking credible steps to end Palestinian terrorism, and publicly condemning and investigating such acts of violence. A Senate Foreign Relations Committee aide told i24news, Our understanding is that US funding to the West Bank and Gaza is on-hold pending an administration review. The West Bank and Gaza office of USAID -- the American international development agency -- has not received its budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The withholding of USAID s total budget as well as third-party projects means the administration is taking an expansive interpretation of what assistance directly benefits the PA, viewing humanitarian projects that would otherwise need to be paid for by the PA as constituting direct assistance to that organization. It s for that reason that it s permissible to erase the terms רחום וחנון even when referring to Hashem. There is some discussion as to the status of names of Hashem in other languages. Since a name is not subject to translation, words used in English or other languages to describe Him [not transliterations] do not qualify as one of the seven names that may not be erased, such as God or Almighty. However, since these words are used as respectful references to Hashem, they have an intermediate status. They should not be spoken in unclean locations and materials that they are written on should not enter a restroom. On the other hand, they may be.(גניזה erased and respectfully discarded (with no need for The Ahiezer argues that even in English, out of respect, the word should be written as G-d, so as to prevent a document that it s written on from being treated improperly. The consensus of other Poskim seems ot be that it s permissible to write it as is. Rabbi David Shabtai, MD Rabbi, Sephardic Minyan rds@brsonline.org Parshah Thought During the admittedly strange episode between Bil am and his donkey, the donkey sees an angel standing in its way. Bil am is unable to see the donkey and gets increasingly frustrated with his donkey s attempts to avoid the angel. In his frustration, Bil am strikes his donkey three times. Miraculously, Hashem opens the mouth of the donkey who lashes out at Bil am demanding an apology for having struck her three times. But instead of using a more commonplace usage of שלש פעמים for three times, the Torah.שלש רגלים uses the more eclectic Rashi picks up on this oddity and notes that it is a reference to the holidays of Pesach, Shavuot, and Sukkot, collectively known as the as if the donkey was conveying to Bil am that he was שלש רגלים going to curse a nation that celebrates these three holidays. But why reference the שלש רגלים as opposed to any other mitzvah in the Torah? Maharal explains that the שלש רגלים are positioned throughout the year at the beginning, middle, and end of the growing season. These are the times of year that Bnei Yisrael experience an extreme closeness to Hashem. The timing, he explains, represents the.(נצחיות) timelessness of this commitment It is perhaps this aspect of נצחיות that Bil am didn t understand. He thought that through sorcery and precisely timed incantations he could thwart Hashem s plan for the world. The lesson is that our connection to Hashem has an aspect of,נצחיות that no amount of sorcery or magic can alter. Page 9
