2 FROM THE RABBI S DESK WHEN YOU RE 'SMILING, KEEP ON SMILING AND THE WHOLE WORLD SMILES WITH YOU Our faces are the homepage of who we are and how we are perceived. No matter what is happening in our hearts or our minds, we leave a strong impression on others based on the disposition carried on our faces. Do we project sadness, despair, worry, uncertainty and doubt? Or, are we happy, positive, optimistic and joyful? Rabbi Yisroel Salanter once said that our faces have the status of reshus ha rabim, they are public domain and we therefore need to be sensitive to the public when we decide what mood we are going to project. The gemara (Kesubos 111b) says that it is better to smile at someone warmly than to provide him with food and drink. Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe writes that just as plants require sunshine to live, converting the rays of the sun into nutrients, people too convert smiles into energy and strength, and without it they wilt and perish. Smiling is a uniquely human expression. When is the last time you saw a dog or cat smile? Indeed, Dr. Nicholas Christakis, a physician at Harvard Medical School, authored a study that concludes that happiness is contagious. The same way when one person yawns, it affects others, when one person smiles or is happy it leads to others happiness and smiling as well. Perhaps this poem by Dale Carnegie, author of How to Win Friends and Influence People, puts it best: None are so rich they can get along without it and none so poor but are richer for its benefits. It creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in a business, and is the countersign of friends. It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and nature s best antidote for trouble. Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is no earthly good to anybody till it is given away! If someone is too tired to give you a smile, leave one of yours. For, nobody needs a smile so much as those who have none to give. Good Shabbos, Rabbi Efrem Goldberg It cost nothing, but creates much. It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give. It happens in a flash and the memory of it lasts forever. Page 2

BOCA RATON SYNAGOGUE DERECH ERETZ STATEMENT In the spirit of our mission Valuing Diversity and Celebrating Unity, we believe that a community is built on the collective engagement of individuals representing differing perspectives, whether religious, political, or social. As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L Shem Shamayim, for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we. Derech Eretz, good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a safe place for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue. In line with our recently published Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. Please hold the door open for others. Try not to stand and talk in doorways where it prevents the movement of traffic. Our children are going to model their parents and their grandparents. If children are judgmental in any way toward their peers, they are almost certainly reflecting what they learn from their ultimate role models. All of these Mensch Messages have been submitted to the office. If you have a Mensch Message you would like us to promote, please us at office@brsonline.org Page 3

7 ISRAEL UPDATE SOCIAL ACTION From the Daily TIP (The Israel Project):Aboud Dandachi, a Sunni Muslim from the city of Homs now living in Istanbul, has created a website dedicated to the Israeli and Jewish organizations and people helping Syrian refugees. The website, Thank You Am Israel, highlights the humanitarian aid being given to displaced Syrians and also refutes any reasons why Israelis and Syrians should be enemies. As a Syrian, I am morally obligated to ensure that the goodwill that Israelis and Jews have displayed towards my people will not be overlooked nor forgotten... Whatever supposed reasons we may have had to be adversaries is dwarfed by the compassion shown to us during our darkest days, a time when we have nothing to give back except our gratitude,... While thousands of Syrians languish on the borders of neighboring countries, Israeli medical teams and hospitals have been tireless and unstinting in treating Syrians in need... Israeli and Jewish organizations are, despite considerable personal risk, on the ground in Greece and the Balkans, providing aid and assistance to the seemingly endless wave of refugees fleeing the mayhem of the Middle East, Dandachi wrote in a January opinion piece on his blog. From the Torah s perspective, so long that a pot was placed on a fire before Shabbat begins, the act is completely permissible. Hazal however, had two concerns about doing so: a. Leaving a pot to cook in an otherwise normal way on a fire, may appare as if somebody has indeed cooked on Shabbat in an impermissible way כמבשל) ;(מחזי b. If raw food was placed on the fire before Shabbat, a person may come to stoke the coals or otherwise raise or lower the temperature of the fire, so as to speed up or enhance the cooking שמא יחתה בגחלים).(גזרה Hazal therefore instituted the prohibition of allowing שהיה food to remain on a fire (or other heat source) onto which it was placed before Shabbat only under specific conditions. The simplest suggestion is to place the food onto a heat source whose temperature cannot be changed (thus obviating the concern of יחתה בגחלים (שמא and on which people do not - (מחזי כמבשל normally cook food (thus obviating the concern of such as on a hot plate or plata. (More to follow.) Hazzan Candidate Shabbatot For the next two Shabbatot, we are welcoming Avraham Parienti as a candidate Hazzan for our minyan. He will be leading the tefillot throughout Shabbat and reading the Torah. Please join us welcoming him to our community and hosting him for these two weeks. Your feedback is important to us. The Sephardic Committee wants to hear from you. Please share your thoughts and concerns with us. Parshah Thought Immediately after charging Moshe Rabbeinu with the myriad details concerning the building of the Mishkan, Hashem tells Moshe to instruct Bnei Yisrael as to shemirat Shabbat. Rashi (based on Gemara Rosh ha-shannah 17b) explains the juxtaposition as, even though you will be zealous in desiring to build the Mishkan, no construction may be done on Shabbat. While the commentaries disagree regarding the precise way to derive this limitation, all agree that it applies. The larger question remains however. Many mitzvot normally involve significant effort and work (such as constructing tefillin boxes or tying tzitzit) and yet the Torah does not warn us that even though we may feel so passionately about performing these particular mitzvot, that we should be careful not to do so on Shabbat. Something is clearly different about building the Mishkan. Perhaps this makes sense according to Rashi s larger approach, that (despite the simple chronological reading of the Torah) the mitzvah to build the Mishkan came after the חטא העגל (sin of the golden calf) and was to serve as a rectification for that sin. According to the Kuzari, חטא העגל was not an outright rejection of Hashem, but rather an expression of a desire to find some (albeit impermissible) way to connect to Hashem. It played to their emotions and fervor. If the Mishkan was to serve to rectify this sin, then one of its main objectives must be to both embrace that jubilant fervor but channel it appropriately. Bnei Yisrael will understandably be zealous to build the Mishkan to correct their past misdeeds. The Torah is trying to teach us that passion and zeal are so important in our Avodat Hashem, so long as they are expressed properly. To make sure that it is true spiritual intensity, we must insure that it is the Torah that dictates our priorities in expressing that zeal and not our own feelings and emotions. Page 8
