2 FROM THE RABBI S DESK I am immensely gratified from the outpouring of s, texts and phone calls I received about how beautiful the Yamim Noraim were at BRS. Participants of all six minyanim have described the inspiration they drew from the Davening led by the wonderful Ba alei Tefilla in their particular minyan. Most people come to Shul and take for granted all of the hard work, organization and preparation necessary to get things in order. But the truth is, it takes an army of volunteers, lay leaders, children and adults, men and women to pull off the High Holidays for the 1,750 people who were seated and the hundreds of children who attend babysitting. Time to Confess and Say Thank You experience. On Yom Kippur we recited the viduy, confession, numerous times. The word viduy has the same root as the word todah or thanks. Indeed, one can use the same word, modeh to express appreciation or to express an admission. One can be modeh l which means grateful to, or can be modeh al, which means admit about. What is the connection between gratitude and admission? Rav Hutner explains that implicit in every expression of gratitude is the admission that you did something for me. When we say thank you we are implicitly admitting you helped me and enriched me in some way. When I say todah I am saying both thanks, and I confess that I needed you. Now that we have said the modeh al, the viduy, the confession of Yom Kippur it is time to say the modeh l, the thank you to the people without whom we could not have had such an amazing and inspiring Please join us in thanking the following people for their hard work and selflessness on behalf of our community during this time of the year. If we unintentionally omitted anyone, please gently let us know by ing Matthew at mjh@brsonline.org and we will be sure to add them. 3 HALACHIC QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK Q: What can be eaten outside of the Sukka on Sukkot? A: Food made from the five grains (wheat, barley, rye, oats and spelt) or bread must be eaten in the Sukka. If one drinks wine or similar beverages in a social gathering or company, it must be done in the Sukka, but without making the beracha leishev basukka first. Fruits, vegetables and water may be eaten outside of the Sukka however, one fulfills a mitzvah by eating any and all food in the Sukka. Women are exempt from eating all foods in the Sukka but certainly receive a mitzvah if they volunteer to do so. Please submit your question of the week on any topic to Rabbi Efrem Goldberg at reg@brsonline.org PARSHA Q & A QUESTIONS - PARASHAT HA AZINU 1. Why were heaven and earth specifically chosen as witnesses? 2. How is G-d faithful without injustice? 3. How does the idea of Chillul Hashem prevent the nations from destroying the Jewish People? 4. What will happen to the nations that conquer the Jewish People? 5. How will G-d s punishment change the way the nations view the Jewish People? 6. On what day was Ha azinu taught to the Jewish People? 7. Verse 32:44 calls Yehoshua Hoshea. Why? 8. In verse 32:47, what does it is not empty from you mean? 9. Why did G-d tell Moshe that he would die a similar death to that of Aharon? 10. If Moshe had spoken to the rock rather than striking it, what would the Jewish People have learned? PARSHA SUMMARY HA AZINU Moshe s discourse. Moshe commenced this poetic discourse to the people by invoking the heavens and the earth as eternal witnesses to his warnings. Moshe ascends Mt. Nevo. After completing this address, Moshe was told to ascend Mt. Nevo so that he would be able to see the Promised Land before he dies. ANSWERS - HA AZINU 1. 32:1 - They endure forever :4 - He is faithful by rewarding the righteous, and without injustice by rewarding even the wicked for any good deeds :27 - The nations would attribute their success to their might and the might of their gods. G-d would not let His name be desecrated like this :35 - They will eventually be punished :43 - They will view the Jewish People as praiseworthy for cleaving to G-d :44 - The Shabbat upon which Moshe died :44 - To indicate that, although he was the Jewish People s leader, he still maintained a humble bearing :47 - That you will receive reward for studying Torah and that there is nothing meaningless in the Torah :50 - Because Moshe wanted this :51 - The Jewish People would have reasoned as follows: If a rock, which receives neither reward nor punishment, obeys G-d s commands, all the more so should they. Questions and Answers are courtesy of Ohr Somayach. BRS OUTREACH REVOLUTION Now that we have just spent a month doing teshuva and hopefully, received Divine forgiveness, it is time to sit back and relax... Just kidding! It is time to celebrate! Just four days after Yom Kippur, the festival of Sukkot begins and we are all looking forward to hosting people that haven t had the benefit of sitting in a Sukkah. If you were inspired by the High Holiday experience, especially if you witnessed the more than 200 people that participated in the BRJE Explanatory Service, go out and invite someone to share the magic of your Sukkah. There were so many people visiting BRS over the holidays and I am sure that there will be more people visiting our campus, so here are two more suggestions about how to handle your interaction. 1. Take initiative to stay in touch. If they are just interested in staying in touch, follow up. If it would have happened before Yom Kippur, you could have called them with tips for easy fasting before Yom Kippur or invite them to your Sukkah on Chol Hamo ed. (The latter is easy and highly recommended.) Other invitations to holiday meals, events, or celebrations are also usually appreciated. If you have specific question, please don t hesitate to ask me. 2. Learn together. If the newcomer seems to be interested in learning more about Judaism, try join our Partners in Torah program and you can try learning parsha together, having topic-based discussions, or just light talk about what it means to be Jewish. The Partners in Torah Kesher Ami series may be helpful if you are looking for a more structured setting of your study together. Just ask me what for a couple of suggestions and I am sure you will find something that you will both enjoy. I want to thank you for engaging in this important aspect of Jewish life and wish you a happy and sweet new year! Inspire yourself to inspire others Josh Page 3

Make sure to come on time for the special kids Kiddush! Boca Raton, FL - Boca Raton Synagogue is happy to announce that its popular teen minyan will be taking place on Sukkot. Generally a time for vacation, when community family members go away and others come and visit, Sukkot is a time when Synagogue programming is expected to slow down. The exact opposite is true at the. Not only will all regular programming continue, inc- New Program for High School Boys Shabbat Seudat Shlishit Join us for a brand new learning and fun program for High School boys. Morphing from David Feldan s High School Boys Mishna class, the boys will now gather each Shabbat in the BRS boardroom. Boys are invited to prepare words of Torah from what they studied that week and a guest speaker will address the students each week. Fun begins after Sukkot. luding the Friday Israel Advocacy meetings and teen minyan, but a Chol Hamoed Israel advocacy/mezuzah hanging ceremony at the local Romney for President campaign office is planned for our teens as well. Teen Minyan takes place each week in the Berdugo Beit Midrash every Shabbat and now Sukkot at 9:45 AM. CALLING ALL TEENS! Sounds pretty simple, right? It actually isn't. How do we advertise all the wonderful events for our teens? One way is through mass texting. We're asking all teens and their parents to text their names, cell #'s and grade to Thanks! Celebrating Our Teens by Rabbi Uri Pilichowski This Week We Celebrate Our Rosh Hashana & Yom Kippur Teen Minyan Simply incredible. There are no other words that describe our minyan. OK, maybe a few. Said one appreciative parent, Thank you for giving my son a wonderful and meaningful Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur experience. He was enlightened and moved by the experience. The Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur teen minyan was more than a quick, fast moving service, but one full of meaning and attractive to our teens. Not only did the teens attend the minyan, they led it. They were the gabbaim, the lainers, the chazzanim, and the olim. They sang with all their hearts and related to Hashem with all their minds. They were inspired with the meaning of the day and the significance of the times. Most of all, for many of our teens, they experienced a Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur that wasn t wholly consumed by page counting and clock watching. There were over fifty teens who participated in this first BRS teen minyan and they loved it. The highlight of the minyan was Kol Nidre night. After a beautifully sung Kol Nidre, the teens listened to a speech about what goes around comes around and the need to act properly at all times. After Maariv, the teens gathered around and studied Mishnayot Yoma for the next two hours. Until 10:00 PM the BRS teens studied the Cohen Gadol s Yom Kippur service in the Beit Hamikdash. Eight chapters of mishnayot seemed to fly by as the teens become experts in the work of the Cohen Gadol. A big yasher koach goes to Hillel Day School Rebbe and BRS youth department s own Rabbi Gershon Eisenberger. Rabbi Eisenberger davened Shacharit, Musaf, Kol Nidre and Maariv for the amud on Both Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Rabbi Eisenberger also prepared a machzor specifically for the teens and their minyan. This week we celebrate our Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur teen minyan and all of the teens who put forth their utmost effort to pray with the concentration reserved for a Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
