2 From the rabbi s Desk This week, I received an from one of the many Jewish organizations who have me on their list. The subject line was the usual Rosh Hashana salutation and well wishes. Indeed, the began in the familiar fashion as the year comes to a close, it is natural for each of us to take stock However, as I kept reading I was very surprised. Normally, that sentence would end with a call for introspection, self-reflection and an analysis of where we went wrong, how we failed, and how we can improve. We should be focused on lifting ourselves up instead of knocking ourselves dow n. Instead, in this particular , the author concludes the sentence by saying, it is natural for each of us to take stock of our accomplishments. The message continued by listing a series of achievements and milestones the organization celebrated this past year. At first, I reacted cynically and thought to myself, of course, it is much more convenient to focus on success rather than on failure, but what a distortion of the essence of this time of year. However, after thinking about it for a moment it occurred to me, that maybe they are on to something. Of course Elul, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur are a time to consider our shortcomings and how we can grow, but should that necessarily translate into guilt, negativity and a feeling of failure. Perhaps we would do better to identify our successes, our achievements and with pride, reflect on what went right this past year, so that it can be repeated and expanded to other areas of our lives. Our main task on Rosh Hashana is to be mamlich Hashem, to coronate God as King. In the process, we should recognize how fortunate and blessed we are, not only to be His loyal servants, but as His children to be princes and princesses, members of the royal family. Indeed, we preface Avinu before Malkeinu in our prayers. We should be focused on lifting ourselves up instead of knocking ourselves down. Spend time these two days thinking about what went wrong, why did it go wrong and how can we prevent it from going wrong again. But don t forget to take as much time to focus on what went right and feel pride in the accomplishments and achievements of the past year. I believe giving ourselves positive reinforcement will propel us forward to have an evening greater year ahead. Shanah Tova, Follow the Rabbi at twitter.com/rabbigoldberg Rabbi Efrem Goldberg Parsha summary Moshe s discourse. Moshe commenced this poetic discourse to the people by invoking the heavens and the earth as eternal witnesses to his warnings. Moshe ascends Mt. Nevo. After completing this address, Moshe was told to ascend Mt. Nevo so that he would be able to see the Promised Land before he dies. Page 2 HaftoraH Insight by Rabbi Uri Pilichowski At the end of the Haftorah read on Rosh Hashana, Hannah brings her son Shmuel to the place of her prayers and presents him to Eli. She thanks Hashem for the salvation He provided in giving her the son she longed for greatly. With as much vigor as her first prayers, Hannah thanks Hashem for the wonderful son she was given. Salvation is an interesting concept. It is central to so many religions, yet each one uses it in a different way. We pray for salvation three times a day in our Shemoneh Esrei. Commonly, salvation is a solution to a terrible tragedy. In Hannah s use of the term, we find a connotation completely different than ultimate salvation. While Hannah s pain was very real, it doesn t seem to make the list of national tragedies that require Divine Salvation. Rather, Hannah presents a novel idea; salvation according to the Torah is not an answer to national tragedy, but rather to personal pain. Divine salvation comes to the individual just as much as to the nation. As we look forward to the coming year, let us take a moment to look back at the past year. Let us recognize all the great things, the great privileges, and the personal salvation that we ve enjoyed this year. With as much fervor that we pray for a good year to come, let us thank Hashem for a great year past. brs Outreach Revolution Just imagine for a moment that, among the seven Minyanim that are being run over Rosh Hashana on the Hahn Judaic Campus of Boca Raton Synagogue, there is a real special treasure. Over 200 people have signed up and are ready to attend an inspiring Beginner Service led by Chazan Daniel Adler, I know that all of our hard work and preparation will pay off. I also want to thank Rick Andron who will be blowing the Shofar and has also helped me prepare for this year s service. A lot of people ask me if it is worth running a program for unaffiliated Jews that will be inspired, will then head back home, and we won t hear from then until the Yamim Noraim next year. So I always answer two things. First, something is always better than nothing. If this is all they connect with the entire year, it s certainly better to come to this program than sit at home watching television in the living room. But, more importantly, that has NOT been our experience. Almost all of our participants do return for a number of the programs. Here at BRS and the BRJE, we do everything we can to, not only connect them with our next program, but also with YOU. On Rosh Hashana, we will be handing out appeal cards with all of the participant s names and contact information printed on the cards. They will look the same and even have fold down tabs, but instead of asking for money, I ll be asking them to sign up for one of our twelve classes that the BRJE will be offering in November. Each class is five weeks in length and will culminate with a huge Chanukah party. We are also letting everyone know that they can sign up for our BRS/BRJE Sukkot dinner on the first night of Sukkot in the Shul Sukkah. It s a great way for the members of our community to meet and connect with our special guests. I always make sure that our guests know and are well informed about the next great program so that they can continue their Jewish journey. Shana Tova, and I want to wish you a happy and healthy sweet new year!! Inspire yourself to inspire others Rabbi Josh Broide VL Days Hours Minutes Seconds

SHECHET FAMILY STAINED GLASS WINDOW This week, BRS is especially pleased to celebrate the installation of the magnificent Jerusalem window above the Aron Kodesh in the Rand Sanctuary. The window was donated by Mr. and Mrs. David Shechet in honor of the Shechet Family several years ago. The stained glass was designed and produced by Crys Soderholm, who has done many other beautiful synagogue windows in the area. This project was truly a labor of love and it is difficult to find adequate words to express our appreciation to Crys for her inspiration, dedication, and artisanal ability that went into the creation of this spectacular work of art that now graces our sanctuary. We are sure that it will serve to inspire us all and we thank the committee members who worked on this project over the past year, including Rabbi Efrem Goldberg, President Daniel J. Katz, Helen Cohan, Lynn W. Hahn, and committee chairman Jonathan Charm. eruv tavshilin If you forgot to make an Eruv Tavshilin, you can rely on the Eruv made by Rabbi Goldberg on behalf of the community. first aid information The following is information on first aid available at BRS. 5 KOL NIDRE APPEAL Dear Congregants, I know the economy is still bad. Everyone is struggling but, if we want the greatness of this community to continue, we need everyone to support the Kol Nidre Appeal. During these hard times, we don t need less programming from the Shul - we need more. Every month, the Shul s bills come and they have to be paid. I ask that you join in supporting this year s appeal. Membership dues only cover a portion of the funds it takes to run BRS. Rest assured that your money will be spent wisely and conservatively. Your donation will be for our, for our children s, and for our grandchildren s benefit. We thank and bless you for your generosity and kindness, and pray that Hashem rewards you in consideration of your goodness.
