2 From the rabbi s Desk I have a confession to make I bought a lottery ticket for the New York Mega Millions. After all, you ve got to be in it to win it and Friday night, winning it means winning more than half a billion dollars. True, the lump sum payout after taxes comes to only $257,000,000 but I think my family can make do with that amount. A Dollar and a Dream Now, I am not foolish, I know that I am not going to win. After all, the odds of winning the lottery is 1 in 175,711,536. There is a greater likelihood of being hit by lightning twice in the same day as there is of winning the lottery. So why play it at all? Moreover, is it halachicly appropriate to play or is it tantamount to throwing out money? Interestingly, some Rabbis have suggested that there is nothing wrong with playing the lottery, but one should not buy more than one ticket. You see, buying one ticket represents human initiative to have a chance at scoring millions. However, the likelihood of winning only grows at a negligible, statistically insignificant rate when buying more tickets. Therefore, say some Rabbis, if you buy more than one ticket you lack emunah, faith, for if God wants you to win, you can win with the one ticket. I agree that only one ticket should be purchased, but for an altogether different reason. The hope of winning is only a small fraction of why I bought a ticket. The real reason to play, is because that ticket gives me license to dream, to ask myself important questions and to reflect in a meaningful way. If you are playing the lottery, you cannot avoid asking yourself what you would do if you won. Would you continue to work? Would you move to Israel? Would you give a meaningful amount to charity and if so where would you direct your philanthropic dollars? How would you spend your newfound time? What luxuries, if any, would you indulge in? What would you change about your life? These questions are not easy to answer and require some serious soul searching. If you won the lottery and you stopped working immediately, what does that say about what you do? Is it a profession or a calling, just for the money or also for the contribution to society? If you won the lottery and remain living outside of Israel, is money the real reason you aren t making aliyah right now? If winning the lottery meant quitting your job and having more time, how would you spend it with your family, exercising, learning Torah, volunteering? What really matters to you and if it is truly important, why not find the time to do it now? Without that ticket in your hand, these questions remain too theoretical to be contemplated seriously and so the way I see it, a dollar is a small amount to pay for the license to dream. However, since the likelihood is that the license to dream is all the dollar will get you, buying more tickets won t expand your license and won t meaningfully increase your chances and therefore, would be a waste of money. So far my dollar has been well spent as Yocheved and I are having fun figuring out the answers to those questions. But, don t get me wrong, we haven t given up hope that our dreams can become a reality. Good Shabbos, Follow the Rabbi at twitter.com/ rabbigoldberg Friend the Rabbi on facebook Efrem Goldberg Share the Rabbi s blog on Rabbi Efrem Goldberg brs Outreach Revolution Just last week, Rabbi Yonatan Sandler and his two sons, Aryeh and Gavriel, were waiting outside the Ozar HaTorah Jewish school in Toulouse, France for a bus to take the children to pre-school. Eight-year-old Miriam Monsonego was just inside the gate of the school. Sadly, their lives were torn away from their families by a lone gunman because they are Jews and none of them will be coming home to remember Passover. While the pain rips at our hearts for these four sweet and holy souls, we can remember them and transform that sorrow into a Mitzvah a spiritual act or deed of kindness. Every good deed has a ripple-effect which builds into waves of goodness that never stop washing across the seas of time and space. Every good deed sets off a chain reaction that ultimately impacts humankind for good. As Maimonides instructs us, one should constantly imagine that the world stands equally balanced between good and evil and that one s very next action will be the one to tip the scale toward good. Several years after the Holocaust, an activist approached the Lubavitcher Rebbe of blessed memory. This idealistic volunteer wanted the Rebbe to endorse a campaign for leaving a chair empty at every Seder table to remember our brothers and sisters that perished in the Holocaust. The Rebbe replied, If you want to do something in their honor, then don t have a token empty chair at the table, but rather fill that chair with a Jew who otherwise wouldn t be attending a Seder. To mourn is a so natural, necessary, and even an obligatory response to tragedy, but consider honoring a direct request from Rabbi Sandler s widow, Mrs. Chava (Eva) Sandler, and celebrate the birth of our people and our survival by inviting another person into your home to share at your Seder table. The ultimate guest at the Seder isn t an illustrious sage or a beloved grandparent, but another Jew who would otherwise not be coming to a Seder or doesn t even know what Passover is. If possible, consider inviting four guests as an opportunity to remember each of the victims who were martyred in Toulouse, France and to extend warmth and friendship to those who need it most. The Shmurah Matzah we eat on Passover is identical to the Matzah our ancestors took with them on their journey through the desert and that sustained them. As we sit together, as Jews have done all throughout the ages, to celebrate the wondrous freedom we were given, let us all share with our friends and family the eternal message of faith that these simple Matzah bring to us. When we eat this Matzah, we are all part of an unbroken chain of Jewish continuity and faith that reaches back thousands of years. Page 2

The Kohanim were given the Mitzvah of T rumat Hadeshen -- lifting the ashes of the daily Korban Olah (Consumed Offerings). They were also told to keep the fire on the altar burning continuously. The Kohanim s Duties. Additional laws were given specifying the Kohanim s duties and the portions of the offerings they were to receive as their due. Installation Ceremony. In an impressive ceremony conducted in the Court of the Sanctuary, Aharon and his sons were installed in their offices by Moshe, with the people watching. After the Kohanim had bathed, Moshe dressed Aharon in his distinctive garments, and anointed the Mishkan and its contents. He then poured the anointing oil upon Aharon s head. Finally, the regular Kohanim were invested with their garments. These rites were repeated for seven days, during which Aharon and the sons remained within the Court. MITZVAH OF THE WEEK: Eating the Korbon Pesach: Hashem told Bnei Yisrael that, on the first night of Pesach, people should get together and eat a portion of The Korban Pesach, a Korban that was offered that afternoon in the Beit Hamikdash. The whole animal had to be eaten so people got into big groups to eat it together. Page 3

9 shomrei olam Blessing everyone with peaceful Passover preparations! Many people use excess aluminum foil this holiday, on the counters or around food. Here are some interesting facts about aluminum, and aluminum can and aluminum foil recycling. Aluminum is made from a natural resource called Bauxite Ore. Making products from recycled aluminum saves energy and Bauxite Ore. There is no limit to the number of times aluminum can be melted down and reused. For aluminum foil to be readily recycled, please fold in flat and not crumbled into a ball. Also, try to keep it free from food contamination. Then place it in the blue bin with other metals and glass. A sweet Passover to all from Shomrei Olam! Bikur Cholim You are invited! Next time that you are at the Boca Raton Regional Hospital, visit the new Jewish Hospitality Suite and Shabbat Room. See what all the excitement is about. Nourish your body and spirit. The NCJA has taken the lead in opposing today s Global March to Jerusalem by terror organizations Hamas and Hezbollah, the Iranian regime, and other anti-semites and Israel haters who want to reverse what they call the Judaization of Jerusalem. Iran s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, along with the revolutionary guards and Basij commanders, are directing the Global March on Quds Jerusalem, to divert attention from Syria, thereby providing time to Assad to put down the unrest, solidify power, and create a diversion from the world s focus on the Iranian nuclear program to Israel. musical chevra The Musical Chevra meets monthly to listen and enjoy classical and popular music. 10 -BRS KIDS & TEENS- Celebrating Our Teens by Rabbi Uri Pilichowski Stepping up is what defines the teenager who understands what responsibility is all about. Teenagers can find many opportunities to step up when needed. At home, stepping up is cleaning up after dinner or helping a younger sibling study and do his/her homework. At school, teens can step up by cleaning up a spill or taking the lead at an activity. On a communal level we ve seen the BRS teens step up in all different ways. Our teens volunteer in all different Chesed projects from adopting a bubby and zaide to Yachad. This past week saw two young teens truly step up. At the BRS Teen Minyan, our regular Gabbai team of Andrew Wald and Michael Krasna were split up. Filling the vacuum for these stupendous Gabbaim were Yitzchak Kaminetsky and Tani Kay. They stood up, assigned Chazzanim, got people to lain, and ensured that on one of the longest Shabbatot of the year Shabbat Rosh Chodesh- Hachodesh Davening was as efficient as always, with a delicious Kiddush to finish us off. This week we celebrate Yitzchak and Tani, two teens who we can celebrate for stepping up. Page 10 Great Event! NO PARENTS ALLOWED! It's Pesach time...what are your children doing this Sunday? Rabbi Uri Pilichowski will be giving a TEEN SHABBAT HAGADOL DRASHA on Korech or Korach: When Compromise Becomes an Art This Shabbat afternoon 5:45 PM Group leader since: 2009 School: Senior at WYHS Rebecca loves being a BRS Group leader because she loves coming to groups on Shabbat morning Davening and playing games with the kids. Our group also loves having a Weekly Dvar Torah from Rabbi Eisenberger. Pro-Israel Teens Policy Conference Reunion Shabbaton this Shabbat. This Shabbat is called Shabbat Hagadol for a number of reasons, none of them because the teens who attended Policy Conference wanted to have a reunion Shabbaton this Shabbat. But our teens enthusiasm is truly great and admirable. Special Invitation by Avigayil Broide For my Bat Mitzvah, I have decided to try to raise money for people who are less fortunate than me. I have always enjoyed children so I have chosen to coordinate a kids program with my friends with the BRS pre-pesach kids program on Sunday, April 1. This will accomplish two goals - Parents of the children that we will watch will be able to prepare for Pesach AND my friends and I will be able to raise much needed funds for Tomchei Shabbat. So, please send your children and I'm sure they will have a great time! KIDS HASHKAMA CHABURA Rabbi Gershon Eisenberger, Boca s new star Rebbe, will be conducting a post Hashkama Minyan Chabura for boys. We will be beginning a new Masechet this Shabbat. This is a great time to join! The Chabura will begin this week at about 9:30 am in Room 102 in the Jacobs and Rubin Youth and Senior Center. Make sure to come on time for the special kids Kiddush! GEMARA FOR BEGINNERS WITH RABBI YAAKOV DRANG Rabbi Yaakov Drang will be giving a Shiur for beginners in Gemara Brachot between Mincha and Maariv on Shabbat afternoon for boys in grades 5-7. JUNIOR CONGREGATION Make sure to come on time this week to Junior Congregation (JuCo)! JuCo begins every Shabbat morning at 10:00 am. Get ready for amazing Davening, Parsha, guest speakers, games, talent, and of course great prizes. BRS Pro-Israel Teens with Rep. Allen West
