1 These are good days at First Baptist Church - spirit is high, participation is high, and the giving at the end of the year was outstanding. Thank you, each and every one of you, for what the Apostle Paul called your partnership in the gospel. There are a few good changes to announce to you. First, Jerry Rodgers, our church administrator, has agreed to let us add to his duties the role of Minister to Senior Adults. Jerry has been filling this role on an interim basis since last April when Andrew Lewis moved away. He has enjoyed the interaction with our seniors, and they report that they have enjoyed Jerry. In January, the Personnel Committee and I, with the approval of the Senior Adult Committee, have asked him to drop the tag interim and continue this ministry on a permanent basis. So welcome, Jerry, formally, to our church staff in your new and expanded role. I know Jerry and the senior adults will have a lot of fun and continue to grow and serve together. Also, Rendell Hipps role will change, at least for awhile. Rendell is a gifted contemporary worship leader and the Personnel Committee and I have again asked him to lead our 8:30am service. AJ Herrick will continue to assist in 8:30am worship leadership and play the guitar. This will be a temporary assignment for Rendell until we are able to call a new Minister of Music and Worship to our church. I would like for every member of First Baptist to pray daily for our search for a Minister of Music and Worship. God has just the right person for us, and the Music Search Advisory Committee and I are making every effort to be patient and obedient as we follow God s leading. The ministerial staff here is truly outstanding, the best I have ever worked with. The Music Search Advisory Committee and I have pledged to keep it that way by not rushing this process and taking the time for God to bring us together with someone with the same ability, character, commitment, and joy in serving the Lord that we see in Jerry Rodgers, Rendell Hipps, and Chris Gillespie. We are moving forward, led by God into the future that He has for us. This is a wonderful and exciting journey to be on, and I thank God that I am on this journey with you. Phillip Dr. Phillip Reynolds, Senior Pastor DO YOU KNOW WHO YOUR DEACON IS? The Committee of Deacons just received their new family ministry assignments at the first meeting of the year in January and should be contacting their family shortly to introduce themselves. In the meantime, please call the office if you need to know which Deacon or Deacon Family Minister will be serving your family. 2 MUSICAL NOTES First Baptist Handbells to Festival On February 24-25, our First Baptist Bells will be attending the North Carolina Baptist Adult Handbell Festival West at the Gateway Center in Hickory. They will be one of 32 handbell choirs participating in this event. The clinician will be Mr. Ed Tompkins from Charlotte. Our ringers will be ringing all Friday evening and Saturday morning and afternoon. There will be a worship/concert on Saturday at 2:15 which is open to the public. Come to support our ringers and experience the awesome sound of 32 handbell choirs ringing together. The North Carolina Baptist Singers and Orchestra at FBC It has been quite a while since the North Carolina Baptist Singers and Orchestra has performed in the western part of the state. On Monday, March 5, First Baptist will be hosting this group of over 100 Baptist musicians from across our state. They gather together only six times a year to rehearse all day and give a worship concert in the evening. The prelude (by the 30-plus piece orchestra) begins at 6:45pm. The concert begins at 7:00pm and lasts about seventy-five minutes. These musicians travel at their own expense and give of their own personal time to make music together to the glory of God. Joining the Singers during the concert will be members from four area Baptist church choirs and our own children's choirs. This will be a glorious evening of musical worship. You will not want to miss it! In fact, bring your friends and neighbors to this great outreach opportunity. Arrive early as we anticipate a packed house (some churches will be bringing bus loads). Sanctuary doors will open at 5:30pm. 3 MINISTRY NEWS Adopt-a-CityKid (a.k.a. CityKids Partnership Ministry) is a ministry designed to allow FBC members to develop a personal relationship with a specific child and family in our neighborhood who participate in our CityKids ministry. These neighbors are just a few blocks away from FBC and live in the Hillside Gardens, Terrace Hills or Blue Ridge Heights communities. There is a great need for many FBC individuals and families to participate in this ministry. Simple actions (throwing a ball, sitting down to chat, playing a board game, etc.) and encouraging words can impact a child in ways we may never even know. By reaching out to those in our community on a personal level, we share the love of Christ with our words and with our actions. Colossians 3:17 says, And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. "Adopt-a-CityKid" Informational Meeting Sunday, February 5, 4:00-5:00pm Parlor (Room 179). Are you interested in learning more about the "Adopt-a-CityKid" ministry? Come to this informational meeting to hear more and ask questions. (Your attendance at this meeting does not obligate you to participate in the ministry.) If you have already agreed to adopt a CityKid, you will receive information about your adopted child/family at the meeting. CityKids Valentine "LoveFun" Event Thursday, February 9, 2:00-4:00pm, held at the Brown-Penn Recreation Center (near Ridgeview library). Be a child's valentine! Our CityKids children will meet us at the Rec center for an afternoon of valentine fun and relationship building. Be a part of this event by contacting Christy Greene. Volunteers are needed to help with games and crafts, but most of all, spreading Christ's love! CityKids Summer Camp - June 18-22, 2012 Monday - Thursday, 12:30-3:00pm and Friday, 10:30am - 1:15pm Mark your calendars now! SENIOR ADULT MINISTRY We welcome Rev. Jerry Rodgers as the Minister to Senior Adults. The senior adult ministry will continue its second Tuesday Fellowships on Tuesday, February 14, at noon. The guest speaker will be Steve Chandler, CEO Diabetes Free Zone. UPCOMING EVENTS - Mark your calendar for these events. Friday, March 16 - Lazy 5 Ranch, Mooresville, April 14 - Senior Adult Cook-out, and April 15 - Senior Adult Sunday. CALLED CHURCH CONFERENCE On Wednesday, January 25, the church voted to change the method of releasing funds for projects proposed by the Missions Council. As a result there will be a called church conference on Sunday, February 12 at 10:45am in the sanctuary for the matter of voting on the Missions Council motion for allotting up to $60,000 for a Habitat House and up to $30,000 for two shower trailers. There will be a question and answering session about both of these proposed projects from 5:00-6:30pm in the parlor on Wednesday, February 8. Discipline God's Way Human nature is complex. We are created in God's very image, yet we are broken and in need of being remade into the likeness of Christ. Children and adults alike are in need of God's re-creative power in our lives. From time to time, our loving heavenly Father must discipline us. Often, our behaviors, patterns, and ways of thinking must be changed. Hebrews 12:6 says "... the Lord disciplines those whom He loves..." Like our heavenly Father, parents must also discipline children. Our model for disciplining children should be the way in which God disciplines us: firmly, but lovingly. Discipline should never involve yelling, belittling, threatening, or any other type of emotional abuse. "Do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." - Ephesians 6:4 Parents should, in a spirit of love, soundness, and clarity, set life-preserving boundaries for their children and then follow-up when those boundaries are broken. Discipline is a necessary part of what it means to be a parent. Take that responsibility seriously, and when you discipline, do it God's way. RA's to Hickory Dickory Dock & Lock-in Friday, February 17 GA's to Sterling House Sunday, February 26, 2:30-5:00pm CALLING ALL RACERS! RA Race - Wednesday, March 7, at 6:00pm in the fellowship hall.
