1 Is it just me, or is something wonderful, something of the movement of God s Spirit, going on among us here at First Baptist Church? I sense a level of enthusiasm, joy, and commitment in this congregation that I have never felt in a church. I have sensed it among our children, youth, adults, and mature adults. It has been present on Sunday mornings and even on Wednesday nights, right on through the dog-days of summer. It has been present during VBS and CityKids weeks. It has been present at the beach where several youth made decisions for Christ and where so many others grew in their relationship with Jesus. It has been present with our youth and adult leaders on John s Island as homes and hearts were repaired in Christ s name. It is present in our attendance, our giving, and our response. God is moving among us. This is the Lord s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes to behold. (Matthew 21:42) Let s enjoy this and give credit where credit is due: to the LORD! God held this fellowship together during an interim period that became anything but an interim period. It became a period of progress and growth and renewed commitment. When I arrived here last April, I found a church on the brink of Greater Things, and not just financially speaking. Of course, Greater Things is the name adopted for the debt retirement campaign, but let s use it in the broadest sense you intended when you adopted that title. Greater Things are still to come because you allowed God to hold you together, strengthen your love for Him and for one another, and call you to new and renewed energy to serve Him in this city. As a result, God found a willing people among whom to pour out His Spirit. To preach here, to teach here, to walk down these halls and be greeted by your smiles, and hugs, and words of encouragement is a wonderful experience. No, it s not just me. God is moving among us and I am thankful to Him. And even with all the good that is happening in our midst these days, I know that Greater Things are still to come as we Reach Up, Reach In, and Reach Out together. 3 MINISTERING THROUGH SONG The FBC gospel choir was started by former Minister of Music, Jim Bailiff, in He was the director until his resignation, at which time Carolyn Gray became the director. The gospel choir sings old southern gospel music. Each one of the 24 members of the group is dedicated to ministering to the residents of Pinecrest Retirement Community. On the first Thursday night of each month, the choir offers a 45 minute devotional service for the residents at Pinecrest. This service includes prayer, a devotional speaker, musical offerings by the choir, and hymn singing by the residents and the choir. Jean Lambert accompanies the group on the piano. The gospel choir has rehearsal on the last Thursday night of each month in the choir room from 6:30-7:30pm. Anyone who is interested in singing gospel music is welcome with open arms to this ministry, so please come and join us. SERVING OTHERS We fed 134 at Sabbath Soup on July 31st. We had twenty-eight FBC members who helped with serving. Our Red Cross Blood Drive goal was 30 pints and we collected 48! This is the largest number ever from FBC. A FAMILY BLESSING The David Eggers family has felt led by God to adopt a child from China. They are now in the process of making an adorable four-year-old girl of their own! There are several ways that we, as their church family, can help with this. First and foremost, pray for them throughout this formidable process! We can also alleviate some of their tremendous financial obligations. There is a required orphanage donation of around $5600 that the Eggers family will take with them when they go to China. This money will be used to help support the children still living in the Bao an Orphanage. CityKids say THANK YOU! Thanks to all of our adult Bible Study classes for collecting school supplies for our CityKids children. Enough supplies were collected to fill 80 totes for children. To help with this orphanage donation the L.I.F.E. Bible Study class is sponsoring a yard sale / bake sale at the gray building on September 24. We will accept donations of yard sale items (no clothes, please), craft items and baked goods to sell. More information about collecting these items will come later, but, please start looking for those no longer needed or wanted (gently used) items you have that you can donate to make this sale successful. Financial contributions will also be accepted and frequent flyer miles can be donated to help with travel expenses. Please contact Ginger Smith ( ) or Dona Cowan ( ) with any questions. Thank you for being part of this exciting process to bring the Eggers daughter home! Children and the Cross "In proclaiming the death of Jesus to children, the desired response is one of gratitude that God accepts us by this act of his suffering love. This response will include an awareness that our own worst acts and attitudes are of the same kind that brought about this act of God's suffering love. The cross is a symbol children should learn to love because it is a promise. It is a promise of forgiveness, or continuing concern, and of God's care for us. Since the Bible represents the cross as the highest act that God has done for us, we can only conclude that it is the necessary way in which God is taking care of what is wrong with the world. Tell children the positive word about the cross. The cross is God's way of making things right. Help children figure out and apply the negative implications of the cross, namely that the wrong and sinful things we as individuals do make this cosmic event of suffering love necessary." - William L. Hendricks, A Theology for Children, p. 171 A new year is underway! It is "Back-to- School" time, and that means new Bible study classes and new teachers for many of our preschoolers and children! Each week, children in the first through sixth grade will be bringing home a sheet which summarizes the lesson for the week and includes activities for the whole family. Please review this sheet with your child and try some of the ideas it suggests. We pray that your family will grow together in the Lord over the coming year!
