Kol Nidre Security Team and Yom Kippur Security Team. MISSING SIDDUR AND CHUMASH A Siddur and Chumash, both with tremendous sentimental value, have gone missing from a box in the Main Shul. They are both inscribed on the front in Hebrew with the name Mordechai ben Gavriel. If you know where these are, please notify the Gabbaim or the shul office. Many thanks. 3 Dear All, KINLOSS YOUTH Yom Kippur & Succot After a fantastic start to the year the Youth Minyan continues with Yom Kippur this Shabbat. Starting at 9.45am we will be running a full service for Shacharit and Musaph led by Kobi Weiner and Zack Benarroch, with our fourth guest speaker of the Yamim Noraim, Rabbi Heller. Next week the Youth Minyan will continue with services for Succot and Shabbat Chol Hamoed. Thank you to the Mendelsohn, Clinton-Davis and Garbacz families for sponsoring the Kiddushim as their daughters Gabi, Eli and Natasha are honoured with being Eishet Chayil. All three girls will be addressing the Youth with Divrei Torah over Chag. Simchat Torah Dinner, Thursday 26th September, Years 7 13 This year s social programme launches with our annual Simchat Torah Dinner, the biggest event of the night in North-West London for Youth. With Israeli themed food, entertainment and all your friends there is no other place to be. Tickets cost 12 per person and must be purchased in advance. To purchase your ticket please contact us. Introducing... Kinloss Club - Succah Party, Sunday 22nd September, Years 5 & 6 This Succot we are launching Kinloss Club for Youth in Years 5 & 6 with a Succah Party. From 6: pm come and join your Youth Directors in the Shul Succah and Deal hall where we will be feasting on hot dogs and nosh and partying with an inflatable assault course, over-sized sumo suits and giant activity games. 4 Some thoughts on Yom Kippur BY RABBI MICHAEL LAITNER Yizkor and Yom Kippur Yizkor is a prayer which originated in medieval times amongst the communities of Ashkenaz (Germany), perhaps in the aftermath of the Crusades. The contemporary American scholar, Rabbi Macy Nulman, suggests the Siddur of Rashi (d. 1105) as an early source of Yizkor prayers. Originally, Yizkor appears to have been said on Yom Kippur only, rather than on other Chagim as has been our practice from the eighteenth century. Why may it have started on Yom Kippur? The 15th century Rabbi Yaakov Weil (known also by the acronym Mahari Veil ), in developing our appreciation of Yizkor noted that the Torah refers to Yom Kippur in the plural Yom Kippurim, Vayikra 23:28 and expounded that it was a day of atonement for both those living and those deceased. Kol Bo, a work whose author is not conclusively identified, wrote that reciting Yizkor on Yom Kippur helps to soften our hearts as we recall departed relatives, stirring us to make the most of Yom Kippur and to restore our relationship with G-d. Both of the above sources are cited by the great 16th century halachist, Rabbi Moses Iserles ( Rema ) in Darchei Moshe and his comments on the Shulchan Aruch (OC 621:8). We might also suggest that reciting Yizkor on Yom Kippur, as we carry out our own personal audits and pray through the dramatic Yom Kippur liturgy, prompts us to value every day and to consider what we must achieve as Jews in the year ahead. The custom of giving tzedakah to memorialise deceased relatives and to perform a mitzvah on their behalf is part of the process of atonement noted above by Mahari Veil. It is based on Devarim 21:8, Atone for your people Israel that You [G-d] have redeemed... The context of this verse is the laws dealing with who takes responsibility for an unidentified corpse. Giving tzedakah is, building on Mahari Veil, a way of continuing the redemption of a deceased relative by performing a mitzvah on the relative s behalf. Yehi zichram baruch, may their memory be for a blessing. May we all merit the atonement of Yom Kippur and a blessed year ahead.
