2 Some Thoughts on the Sidra By Barry Colman Rather, only at the place that Hashem, your God, will choose from among all your tribes to place His Name there, shall you seek out His Presence and come there. And there shall you bring your elevation-offerings and feast-offerings, your tithes and what you raise up with your hand, your vow offerings and your free-will offerings, and the firstborn of your cattle and your flocks Devarim 12:5-6 As we head into Elul and start to focus on ourselves in preparation for the Yomim Noraim, this week s sedra reminds us of what we must do in order to achieve the targets we have set ourselves. Within the sedra there are a number of mitzvot that will come into effect once the Jewish people have entered the Land of Israel. One area of particular focus are the various obligations that the people must bring to Yerushalayim when they travel there for the festivals. Of the offerings that the people brought to the Beit HaMikdash there were of two types obligatory offerings and personal offerings. Personal offerings were brought to fulfil pledges that people made. People would make a deal with God and in return would promise to bring an offering. Such a pledge would be either an actual sacrifice or products to help with the running of the Temple, such as wood for the altar. Although made voluntarily, such pledges would become obligations and people would have to fulfil them when they travelled to the Beit HaMikdash for the following festival. In teaching us this the Torah is warning us that those who have made a vow to bring something to the Beit HaMikdash should not come to Yerushalayim empty-handed. At each festival, we should fulfil all our obligations. Unfortunately laziness is a natural human characteristic and the Torah is telling us not to procrastinate and put off what we need to do. Throughout our lives, we are obligated to work toward perfecting our characteristics and the Torah assists us with this constant struggle. As we move towards Rosh Hashanah, the Torah is reminding us to look at the vows we have made this past year and to stop putting off the obligations we have not yet fulfilled. 3 THIS WEEK S HAFTORAH BY RABBI ANDREWS As this week s Shabbat coincides with Rosh Chodesh Ellul, we read from a special Haftorah from the 66th chapter of the book of Yishayahu (Isaiah). The reading opens with an allusion to building a new Bait Hamikdash (temple), Where is the house that you may build for me? (66:1). Thus, this nivua (prophecy) concerns a time after the Jewish people obtained the freedom to return from Bavel (Babylon) after 70 years in exile. The Bnei Yisroel are told that God does not desire improper sacrifices nor insincere sin offerings. Yeshayahu describes Tzion (Zion) as a woman in labour and God as the midwife who delivers the child. This birth is extraordinary as it is described as painless. The metaphor is that The Jewish people and the city of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) are reborn and restored. Yishayahu instructs the people to, Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad for her. Yishayahu informs us of a time when all of the peoples of the Earth will come together to recognise God s glory. The Jews spread out across the globe will be returned to Yerushalayim, on horses, in chariots and drays, on mules and dromedaries (66:20). Subsequently, Yishayahu foretells that from one new moon to another, and one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh shall come to worship before Me (66:23). This verse connects this text to the theme of Rosh Chodesh. We repeat this verse, the second to last, after the reading to close the Haftorah on a positive note as the imagery in the final pasuk describes death and punishment for those who rebel against God.
