These three representatives will be discussing how religious law in general, and Jewish, Christian and Muslim laws more specifically, find their place in a civil society. 4 Some Thoughts on the Sidra SHEMOT BY RABBI JEREMY LAWRENCE What You Know & Whom You Know Parshat Shemot begins with a listing of the family who came down with Jacob to join Joseph in Egypt and then tells us that after they had all died a new king arose who did not know Joseph. The new king feared the growing Israelite cohort that filled the land and resolved to take wise preventative action. Our commentators ask about the emphasis placed on the idea that the new king didn t know Joseph. Why do we need to be told? Obviously, time has passed. Is the Torah simply teaching that the new Pharaoh hadn t met the hero who had spared his country the years of famine and made the palace rich? Would the Torah include this detail just to highlight that the new ruler didn t know his country s history? In fact this might be the case. Egyptian history records many changes in regime not just changes of king but of entire ruling families and dynasties. The Pharaohs who built the step pyramid at Saqqara and the Sphinx belonged to the 11 dynasties of the Old kingdom. Tutankhamen belonged to the 18th Dynasty. Ramses II, who was possibly the king at the time of Moses belonged to the 19th dynasty. Just like other turbulent transitions, it might be a case of out with the old and in with the new. A new dynasty committed to securing its own power base and eradicating the families who had prospered under their predecessors. The new king had no relationship with Joseph, and Joseph s children had no loyalty to him. Not knowing Joseph could also be understood on a symbolic level. Joseph s interpretation of the old Pharaoh s dreams taught important lessons about the roles and powers of God and man. Joseph had taught that destiny was established by God. The years of plenty and the years of famine were ordained. Nonetheless, our destiny is shaped by our responses. The collection of food when the harvests were good and the storage of grain for the years ahead highlight the role of humanity. We don t just let God get on with it. Pharaoh with his idols and magicians pretended that he was a God. Joseph had taught his Pharaoh that men were but men; and despite their pretentions to divinity kings were but mortal and finite. God, alone, had sovereign, universal and infinite power. On this level, not knowing Joseph therefore has two consequences. First is Joseph s lesson of the relative roles and that Pharaoh as a god was self-deception. Secondly, Joseph established in his time that God does reveal Himself through dreams and human prophecy. The idea that the new king didn t know Joseph isn t just there to teach us that the new Pharaoh didn t know his Egyptian history trivia. If you look at the ongoing Exodus narrative, you ll see that the interactions between Moses and Pharaoh were all about re-teaching the Joseph lessons. That s why it s important that Moses can say who has sent him; that God commands and that God demands. Pharaoh starts the drama by questioning who is this God? But eventually, his magicians unable to replicate the plague of lice identify the finger of God. After the plague of hail Pharaoh concedes that he has sinned before God and, eventually, as his soldiers perish at the Sea, Pharaoh sees his might crushed by the Hand of God. The Bible is teaching us that there can be a link between the what you know and the who you know. It personalises Joseph s lessons. It identifies the teaching with the man. When people look at us do they see our suits, our jewellery, our cars or our job descriptions? Or do we project values of meaning. Give it a thought, what do I stand for? For what am I known?
