4 Some Thoughts on the Sidra, BY BARRY COLMAN You shall not turn over to his master a slave who is rescued from his master to you. He shall dwell with you in your midst, in whatever place he will choose in one of your cities, which is beneficial to him; you shall not taunt him. (Devarim 23:16-17) On these pasukim Ramban explains that during a seige of an enemy city, it is common for slaves and prisoners to try and escape to the liberators. The Torah commands Israel that such escapees must be given their freedom and permitted to settle wherever they wish in Eretz Israel. In the moral sense, for the nation that maintains the holiness of its camp to send a man seeking his freedom back to a life of idolatry would be wrong. In the practical sense, people seeking asylum often become important allies of the invaders, because they reveal valuable information that will help in the conquest. You shall not turn over to his master a slave : This is to be understood as Targum Onkelos renders it: You shall not give over a slave of non-jews (Rashi Devarim 23:16) Onkelos has explained the word slave to mean the slave of a non-jew. A number of commentaries including the Sefer Zikaron believe this refers to a slave who is a member of a non-jewish nation which seemingly is what Rashi is implying. Alternatively, the verse speaks of even a Canaanite slave of an Israelite who fled from the area outside the Land of Israel to the Land of Israel. (Rashi Ibid.) Rashi continues by providing us with a different interpretation of the word slave. Here he has followed the opinion of the Gemera in Gittin 45a where it describes a slave as a non-jewish slave escaping from his Jewish master. The pasukim immediately before this have discussed Israel at war with non-jewish nations. Therefore it is fitting for Rashi s first opinion to follow the idea of a slave of a non-jew, as that is the context of the previous pasukim. However, why does Rashi then go on to offer a second opinion? As mentioned above, the Ramban explains that it is common for slaves and prisoners to try and escape to the liberators. One would not return a slave to their former master. Rashi s first opinion is obvious. It is self-evident and so is not what the Torah is trying to teach us. It is Rashi s second opinion that we are being taught. This is a case of a non-jewish slave running away from his Jewish master. Why shouldn't he be returned? Why is one Jewish master better than another? He (the escaping slave) should serve those dwellers of the Land of Hashem, and thus be saved from serving those who dwell in the impure lands (outside of the Land of Israel) which have no mitzvot conducted in them. (Ramban Devarim 23:16) As Ramban states, the answer is that one master lives in the Land of Israel and the other does not highlighting the holiness of the Land of Israel compared to that of the diaspora. 6 On One Foot - The Month of Ellul There is a general principle that 30 days before a festival we begin our preparation. In the case of Rosh Hashanah and the High Holidays, shul offices have been hard at work with timetables and tickets since May. However, for the congregations the solemn season begins with Rosh Chodesh Ellul. The month of Av is always full, meaning that it has 30 days. The two days of Rosh Chodesh which fell on 3rd and 4th of September were the 30th of Av and the first of Ellul respectively. Accordingly, the observances of the month of Ellul such as shofar and reading Psalm 27 began on Sunday 4th of September. A consequence of this Rosh Chodesh falling on Shabbat was that on Parashat Re eh we read the Haftara for Shabbat/Rosh Chodesh and not the regular Haftara (Isaiah 54:11 55:5) which is the third of the seven special Haftarot of compassion which follow Tisha B Av. This Shabbat, we shall add those verses to the regular Haftara for Ki Teitze (Isaiah 54:1 10). This combined double Haftara is identical to the Haftara we read on Shabbat Noach. It talks of renewal and national rebuilding after the devastation and deluge. Each morning in Ellul at the end of Shacharit we blow the shofar. Most congregations blow a single round of Tekia, Shevarim, Teruah, Tekia though some blow a full set of 30 blasts. The message of the shofar is to alert us and ready us for the season as well as heralding The King. According to midrash and the mystical tradition, Hashem is surveying creation and close to us, in our midst during this month. The shofar is not blown on Erev Rosh Hashanah, so that is fresh and we can make the shehechiyanu blessing on the day. At the end of Shacharit and Maariv every day from Rosh Chodesh Ellul through to Shemini Atzeret we read Psalm 27, the Lord is my light and my salvation which exhorts us to be confident and of courage that Hashem will redeem us though we may have deviated from His path, so long as we place dwelling in His house foremost amongst our desires. Although we talk of Hashem inscribing our deeds on Rosh Hashanah and sealing them on Yom Kippur, there is a strong tradition that final judgement is set on Hoshana Rabba, leading into Shemini Atzeret (and hence the frenetic beating of our sins out from the willow sprigs on Hoshana Rabba morning.) One of the most beautiful observances of Ellul is the recitation of Selichot prayers. For the Sephardi community, these begin from Rosh Chodesh and are recited every day before dawn. For the Ashkenazi community they begin at midnight on the Motzei Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah (or the Motzei Shabbat of the preceding week if otherwise there would be fewer than four days of Selichot. The prayers are formulated around the 13 Attributes of God s mercy ( Hashem, Hashem El Rachum vechanun Exodus 34: 6 7). According to the Talmud (Rosh Hashanah 17b) if such anthropomorphic characterisations of God had not been written into the Torah we would have castigated them as heretical. Nonetheless, we hold that it is a unique blessing to Israel that any time we wish to atone for our sins, when we recite these attributes in a minyan, Hashem guarantees forgiveness. The reciting of the 13 Attributes is punctuated by a variety of liturgical poems and responsive pizmonim. Towards the end of the Selichot service, we open the Aron Kodesh and chant Shema Koleinu, begging Hashem to hear our voice. The service concludes with the acrostic Ashamnu confession. Most communities read Selichot through till Yom Kippur, though the Chabad custom is to stop after the fast of Gedalia (3rd Tishrei). Please join us for Selichot at Kinloss at 11:45 PM next Motzei Shabbat, 24th September. R Jeremy Lawrence

7 Rabbi Lawrence Writes Mandy and I thank everyone for their good wishes over our weddings this summer. It was a rare and delightful blessing to be able to address our son, Rafi under the Chuppa in Perth and six weeks later our daughter, Shira under the Chuppa in Jerusalem. Last week I was honoured to be the keynote speaker, opening the Council of Christians and Jews Conference. We looked at some of the goals and challenges facing interfaith dialogue; presenting faith as a positive force in a secular society; feeling free to express one s religious principles to others without watering them down; growing through an understanding of each other without losing self-definition; religion as a force of good providing stability, justice and strong communities and the value of partners from other religions in the political defence of Shechita, Milah and Israel. What a wonderful launch to our Ellul Programme with Emeritus Chief Rabbi, Lord Professor Jonathan Sacks addressing us last Shabbat in shul and again over lunch. His theme in the morning was the importance of personal growth and learning, noting that the greatest statesmen found time to read and write widely even while in office. In the afternoon we were privileged to hear from Rabbi Daniel Rowe, Executive Director of Aish HaTorah, who gave an uplifting shiur on Scales of Eden: Sin, Judgement and Teshuva in the writings of Maimonides. More this Week Our programme continues with guest Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Dovid Ebner from Yeshivat Eretz Hatzvi this Shabbat and a joint day of learning with him on Sunday. On Monday evening we have a pre-rosh Hashana Leil Iyun, where I will be joined by Rabbi Laitner, Chava Wulwick and Roisey Nevies from 8pm-10pm. I hope that you will join us. Family Friendly Tefilla I am delighted that we will be launching our Family Friendly Tefilla on Shabbat 1st October. It will comprise a participatory Shacharit where most of the tefillot will be sung together. It is for parents with their children (years 3-6) and will run in the Rabstein Room (adjacent to the Kinloss Suite) from 10:15-11:15. I have developed the model in conjunction with Jason Marantz, Nic Abery & Rav Malachi. The service will evolve as participants become used to our tunes and our format. I am looking forward to you joining us on October 1. Calling for Theatrical Talent We re looking to put on the moving and thought-provoking play Address Unknown in Kinloss in The novella, written in 1938 foreshadowed the dehumanisation and alienation of the Shoah. If you are interested in acting or stage production or would just like to be a part of our team, please contact me on rabbi@rabbilawrence.net and we will be in touch with you shortly. Wishing everyone a Shabbat Shalom R Jeremy Lawrence Rabbi Mordechai Tzvi Sufrin z l The Kinloss Rabbonim, Honorary Officers and Community extend condolences to Chazan Eli and his family on the sad loss of his father, Rabbi Mordechai Tzvi Sufrin in the early hours of Thursday morning. May they be comforted in his memory alongside all mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
