2 Some Thoughts on the Sidra BY BARRY COLMAN Korach the son of Yitzhar, the grandson of Kehas, the great-grandson of Levi, began a rebellion along with Dasan and Aviram had a confrontation with Moshe along with 250 Israelites who were men of rank in the community, representatives at the assembly, and all widely known. (Bamidbar 16:1-2) Rashi notes that when the Torah discusses Korach s family lineage, it stops with Levi and not his father Yaakov. But why? Yaakov knew through prophecy that one of his descendants would lead an uprising against the Jewish people. Let my spirit not be united with their meeting (Bereishit 49:6) Distressed by this prophecy, Yaakov, when blessing Levi, is referring to Korach s revolt with the words their meeting. In doing so Yaakov was pleading with Hashem to distance him from this rebellion. A number of commentators discuss that Yaakov detected a flaw within Levi s personality that would eventually lead to Korach. Levi was extremely loyal, while at the same time was able to see the bigger picture. Yaakov recognised both sides of Levi s personality and through prophetic vision he foresaw that the negative side of Levi s behaviours would one day breed someone like Korach. Korach believed in a system of religious socialism in which power is exercised not by its leaders, but rather by the entire community. His approach stemmed from his firm belief in the superiority of the Jewish people. You have gone too far he said to Moshe and Aharon. All the people in the community are holy, and God is with them. Why are you setting yourselves above God s congregation? (Bamidbar 16:3) Due to his intense sense of loyalty to his fellow Jews, which Korach inherited from Levi, his attitude towards the leaders makes sense. When the Torah traces Korach s genealogy to Levi and not further to Yaakov, it is acknowledging that Levi s character flaw was the main catalyst of Korach s rebellion, as on this occasion, his extreme sense of loyalty to the Jewish people went too far. 3 Kinloss Berlin Trip What a moving tour of Berlin led by Rabbi Aubrey Hersh in conjunction with Ilana Epstein from Cockfosters and North Southgate Synagogue and US Living & Learning. Berlin was a city of Jewish culture and scholarship, a leader in the arts and modern thought. It also became the hub from which the grossest evils of the twentieth century emanated. Nothing highlights that more than Wansee. The decision to bring about the Final Solution was taken in a beautiful villa, with a placid lakeside view, rosebushes and manicured lawns. Fifteen of the Nazi hierarchy met to discuss how to effect better, more efficient liquidation of the Jews; turning mass murder of human beings into a clinical processing of an unwelcome population. The commemorative museums, exhibits and Memorial Square evoked mixed emotions. The latter is akin to a concrete "zecher lechurban" (deliberately undecorated yet prominent area in the home to mark our enduring sadness at the destruction of the Temple). It jars against the greenery and reconstructed grandeur at the heart of the city. At its opposite corner, and referenced only by a descriptive noticeboard, lies the site of the Fuhrerbunker, in which Hitler spent the last days of the war till his suicide there. Lacking in any conspicuous decoration or signage is the building which housed the Adass Jisroel Community of Berlin and the Rabbinic Seminary started by Rabbi Ezriel Hildesheimer ( ). At the forefront of Orthodox modernity, yet a steadfast devotee of a Halachic Torah lifestyle, Hildesheimer championed a broad education without compromising on the rigorous pursuit of traditional Talmud and halacha. He supported greater education for Women, was an enthusiastic fundraiser and supporter of the Yishuv. He believed in cooperation with the wider Jewish community where necessary - but was a vociferous opponent of the Reform and Liberal Movements, which were strong in his Berlin. Contrast the magnificent reconstructed exterior of the Oranienburgerstrasse Reform Synagogue with his modest facility, literally around a corner and down the street. From the exhibits marking the division of Berlin and the Wall, to the Quadriga (four horses) atop the Brandenburg Gate, erected by Frederick the Great, conquered and removed to France by Napoleon, returned after the fall of Paris in the Franco Prussian War, Berlin is a city of conflict and contrast. Jews returned after the war, though the bulk of today's community are ex-russian/ex-ussr. We met with representatives of the Lauder Foundation who are supporting and resourcing Jewish life in the city. While there is a sense of "Presence despite the Odds" in the former Nazi capital, the traumas of the past are heavily present in Berlin today. Moreover, no one can ignore the rising anti-semitism in Germany and around Europe without wondering "what's the Tipping Point?" or thanking Hashem that now we have a home that's always open. 6 THIS WEEK S HAFTORAH BY RABBI ANDREWS This week s Haftorah from the first book of Shmuel (Samuel I), perek (chapter) 11 continues the story began in perek 9. It is there that the B nei Yisroel (Israelites) demand a king and God grants their request. He directs the prophet Shmuel to find a young man named Shaul (Saul) and anoint him as king. Our haftarah begins with Shmuel preparing to travel to the town of Gilgal to perform Shaul s official coronation. The choice of Gilgal as the place of the coronation might suggest that the prophet, Shmuel, was trying to impart some message to the Jewish people. The Radak (Rabbi Dovid Kimchi, ) points out that Gilgal was where the Aron (Ark) and Mishkan (portable sanctuary used before the construction of the Temple in Jerusalem) resided when the Jews first entered the Land. In essence, this was the first place of Jewish settlement in Israel. Shmuel was implying that the choice of a king should join the national narrative of their roots as a formative event as significant as their first entry into the Land. The Haftorah echoes some of the language of the Parsha. Shmuel askes the people a line of questions, similar to Moshe s (Moses), Have I taken anyone s ox or anyone s donkey? Have I maltreated or oppressed anyone?. That said, the connection between the Haftorah and this week s Torah reading might be more thematic. It is possible that Chaza l (the Rabbis) compare Korach s inappropriate bid for power to the request for an Israelite king. In many societies of the time, kings saw themselves as gods or as replacements for deities, and their power was unrestricted. If the Israelite king were to behave in such a fashion, he would be just as bad as Korach, failing to harken to the lessons of the parsha. If you find yourself at Kinloss over the course of the day, please stop by the office to say hello!
