2 Faith Enabled Enterprise I was privileged to spend last Shabbat in the Vatican at the Rome Roundtable of the Global Foundation. We were hosted by Bishop Marcelo Sanchez-Sorondo, who is the Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in the Casina Pio IV, their stunning late 16 th century headquarters in the Vatican Gardens. The Roundtable is faith-enabled discussion on a variety of concerns; co-operative globalisation, the New Silk Road (China s development and growth), climate change, building sustainable communities around mining, eradicating human trafficking and forced labour (including the trafficking of organs) and looking at models for better and best practice. The sixty participants were drawn from diverse backgrounds, including Larry Summers, (former US undersecretary for International Affairs and Senior economist of the World Bank), Kevin Rudd (former Prime Minister of Australia), Pascal Lamy (Former director of the WTO), Professor Enrico Giovannini (recent Italian Minister for Labour) and Dr Lebin Wu (Chair of the Chinese Academy of Science Holdings CASH ). Amongst those joining me in the faith component were Archbishop Dr Thabo Makgoba, (Anglican Primate of South Africa), Archbishop Sir Bernard Ntahoturi, the Archbishop of Canterbury s representative to the Vatican, Archbishop Kay Goldsworthy, Anglican Archbishop of Perth, Rev Justin Lewis-Anthony (Deputy director of the Anglican Centre in Rome). Faith enabled dialogue entails bringing religious teaching into the discussion of enterprise and building upon religious perspectives of spiritual worth, employers /employees rights and responsibilities, the environment and management of resources. This was not a forum for motherhood Golden Rule blandishments but a look at the nitty gritty of halacha / applied Scripture. The Torah encourages enterprise and growth, but at the same time is firm on establishing social responsibility with a strict ethical code. In our session I traced a path from Ben Zoma in איזהו עשיר השמח בחלקו Avot 4,1 Who is rich? One who is happy with his portion to our לתקן Aleinu, universal mission stated at the end of to repair or heal the entire world עולם במלכות ש-די under the dominion of the Almighty. Our portion is not just our assets, but our portfolio of responsibilities. Contentment in this light is not merely a reflection on accrued wealth but also on appreciating the discharge of personal religious liabilities, to one s family, staff, community and the world at large. Ultimately, our purpose is uplift with a Global reach. When, for example, our mining companies exploit others or despoil their locale, diminish their resources and abandon them once they have nothing more to offer, that is not only a throwback to abuses of the colonial era it is a religious wrong for which we are collectively and individually accountable. How, though, do we encourage our executives and CEOs to present fair-trade options to their shareholders and encourage them to do what is right even though it yields less immediate return? Addressing this, we heard from Steve Waygood, who chairs the Corporate Human Rights Benchmark, and from Maurice Ostro, son of a Shoah Survivor, who spearheads Fayreshare and Entrepreneurial Giving. Microfinance initiatives, such as those championed by Tzedek, are an excellent way to transform lives, build hope, empower individuals and build up communities. Last Shabbat as Korach vied with Moshe for the role of leader, Moshe retorted to the Leviim, is it not enough for you to be distinguished with the privileges of serving Hashem in your avoda and song, ה מ ע ט מ כ ם כ י ה ב ד י ל א- לה י י ש ר א ל א ת כ ם מ ע ד ת י ש ר א ל It was indeed an honour to spend.ל ה ק ר יב א ת כ ם א ל יו that Shabbat with people who genuinely appreciated the privilege of using our resources and enterprise for the betterment of others, for a better world as a Divine imperative for His world and in His Name. Shabbat Shalom R Jeremy Lawrence

3 Rock-Fall Parshat Chukkat includes the narrative of Moshe striking the rock, though Hashem had instructed that he speak to it. The well which had miraculously followed Miriam vanished with her death. There was no water. The children of Israel were thirsty and complained. Hashem tells Moshe to speak to the rock and bring water out of it. Moshe loses his temper with the children of Israel and strikes the rock with his rod. Water does pour out. The children of Israel have their thirst quenched. However, for defying Hashem, Moshe is told that he will be punished and not allowed to into the Promised Land. It is one of the harshest narratives in the whole of the Torah. And one of the most paradoxical. Clearly Moshe should have followed Hashem s instruction to the letter... but given that he did not and was punished so severely, how come he was successful and water flowed from the rock? For sure, Moshe was wrong to lose his temper. Perhaps, too, we are shown that a man in his position is judged rigorously. After all, Moshe teaches and represents absolute fidelity to the word of Hashem. To that extent it was necessary that Moshe be seen to have been held accountable and to incur a very real penalty. And yet, Water did flow out Despite his anger, Hashem didn t embarrass Moshe and didn t let him down. Hashem didn t hold Moshe up to ridicule nor let him become a laughing stock in front of the people. Hashem didn t choose to let the miracle fail until Moshe put his rod down and apologised. Moshe own contrition is not even mentioned at this point. We note also, that the eventual punishment for violating Hashem s instruction was a punishment delivered and implemented by Hashem alone. Chazal take from this story a couple of valuable lessons. For our leaders in the religious and also the lay world. Leadership is an onerous responsibility and the people who take on that charge make many sacrifices, however much they might enjoy the limelight. For sure they must be true to their charge and accountable. The fact that Moshe was punished is a reminder that one s prestige, one s prominence and one s track record don t mean that one has risen above normal religious obligations. Far from it. Even Moshe is held to account. From the fact that Hashem made the miracle happen despite Moshe doing the wrong thing, there is a second significant lesson. People make mistakes. Sometimes their passions get the better of them. And it happens to the greatest of people. However, not every mistake by a leader is one which must result in immediate uproar, in scandal or humiliation. Moshe s impropriety here was between him and Hashem. Hashem would resolve that himself and in His own time. Disciplining Moshe was not a job for every grumbling Israelite. It was important to Hashem that the good and vital work that Moshe was doing, alongside the recognition of all the good that he had already done was not sacrificed in the face of a single injudicious lapse. We are quick to criticise and to judge. Judgement is not wrong. We are not supposed to sit back and acquiesce in the face of wrongdoing or injustice. Nonetheless, we should offer commentary that is appropriate and constructive. We should appreciate the good even when criticising the bad. We learn from Hashem s handling of Parashat Chukkat not to leap at every opportunity to chop down tall poppies and leave our field barren. Shabbat Shalom. R Jeremy Lawrence

4 THIS WEEK S HAFTORAH BY RABBI ANDREWS The focus of this Haftorah is the Shofet (Judge) Yiftach (Jephthah). In last week s Haftorah, when Shmuel (Samuel) rebukes the Jews for rejecting God s leadership in favour of a king, he lists six leaders who had saved the Jewish people. Chaza l (the Sages) explain that this list is divided into great and mediocre leaders, and put Yiftach in the latter group. The Gemora (Talmud, Rosh Hashanah 25b) shares this sentiment when it reiterates our obligation to listen to the leaders of our generation by saying, Yiftach in his generation is like Shmuel in his. Yiftach s father was Gilead, a mighty warrior. After his father s death, as the child of a second wife, his half-brothers prevented him from claiming his inheritance and expelled him from their home. Targum Yonatan (Jonathan) explain that Yiftach s mother, described as a zona, was an innkeeper, while the Radak (Rabbi David Kimchi) assumes she was a concubine. Yiftach left his family and settled in the land of Tov, where we are told empty people gathered to him. Years later, Gilead s tribe was attacked by the nation of Amon. Fearing for their lives, the men of the tribe who had once shunned him approach Yiftach and request that he lead them in battle. Yiftach drove a hard bargain with the elders who sought his assistance. We see that his brothers mistreatment and the local elders failure to protect him still irked him. Once he secures their agreement that he will be their leader, he sends messengers to the B nei Amon (Ammonites), who claim the B nei Yisroel took their land on the way up from Egypt. Yiftach knew the details of what occurred three hundred years before. In explaining their claim to the land, Yiftach s message recounts the history taken directly from this week s Parsha. The messengers outline how they attempted to cross through Edom to the land of Israel, but Edom refused to grant them entry. They had the same result with Moav. The next kingdom they tried was Cheshbon. However, fearful of the Jewish people, Heshbon attacked. Ultimately, with God s help, the B nei Yisrael emerged victorious. 3 weeks at Kinloss If I forget You, Jerusalem: New And Old Perspectives On Exile Mondays from 8-9pm 2 nd July Battle for the Soul of Jerusalem: Secular-Religious Tension in the Holy Land Rabbi Rashi Simon, Founding Director of Kesher 9 th July Exile and Redemption: a Chassidic Perspective Rabbi Mordechai Twerski, Yeshivat Meirim 16 th July A Day We Cannot Ignore: The history and future Of Tisha B av Rabbi Michael Laitner, Kinloss Assistant Rabbi and Director of Education for the United Synagogue Tisha B Av at Kinloss 21 st July Fast in 9:05pm Shabbat Ends, Maariv & Eicha - 9:57pm 22 nd July 8:00am 2:00pm 6:30pm Joint Shacharit (Main Synagogue) Early Mincha 2 nd Mincha 7:00pm Denial Film When university professor Deborah E.
