2 Some Thoughts on the Sidra By Barry Colman I will not continue to curse again the ground because of man, since the imagery of man s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again continue to smile every living being, as I have done. Bereishit 8:21 Once the flood waters had receded and Noach had left the ark, Hashem affirmed that He would never again hold the land responsible for the transgressions of its inhabitants. However the Sifri, in his commentary on Sefer Devarim, points out a contradiction to this pasuk: He will bring retribution upon His foes, and He will appease His Land and His people. Devarim 32:43 Sifri The Sifri states that the land does in fact bear responsibility for its inhabitants. So how do we bring together these two contradictory verses in our understanding? According to the Piskei D Rabbi Eliezer, Eretz Yisrael did not take the brunt of the flood and when Hashem s promise to not continue to curse again the ground because of man applied only to parts of the earth that were hit by the full force of the flood. Eretz Yisrael was flooded by the water coming from the surrounding lands and not by the raging waters of the flood. For this reason the verse in Devarim states that He will bring retribution upon His foes, and He will appease His Land and His people, indicating that Hashem continues to use Eretz Yisrael to atone for the sins of the Jewish people, while all the other lands lost their sensitivity to their inhabitant s sins. Let not the land disgorge you for having contaminated it, as it disgorged the nation that was before you. Vayikra 18:28 Here Hashem warns us of the sensitivity of the land of Eretz Yisrael to our sins with Ramban highlighting this in his commentary with the examples of the destruction of both Temples and the following expulsions from Eretz Yisrael. NOACH STATISTICS Mitzvot: None of the 613 mitzvot Verses: 153 (4th longest of the 54 Sidrot, the longest in Bereishit) Words: 1861 (11th longest) Letters: 6807 (13th longest) Haftarah: 22 verses (39th longest of the 80 Haftarot) Noach has some of the shortest verses of the Torah, hence the significant difference in its ratings. 3 Cheshvan, Noach & Rain The month of Cheshvan, following on from Tishrei and all the Chagim is reputedly the only Jewish calendar month without any festivity. Accordingly, it has acquired the epithet Mar -Cheshvan or Bitter Cheshvan. Of course, some think that after all those days of shul, feasting, time off work etc getting back to normal living and full working weeks is as sweet as it can get! In Israel, 7 th Cheshvan sees the switch in the Amidah from v ten bracha to v ten tal u matar livracha (give dew and rain as a blessing). In diaspora, this doesn t happen till the evening of 4 th December (or the day after in a year preceding a Civil Leap Year.) One might wonder 1) Why is there a difference? 2) How we come to switch from the Jewish to the secular calendar? The dates were established by the Anshei Knesset Hagadola (The Men of the Great Assembly) who ruled Israel from the time of Ezra and the building of the 2 nd Temple (c520 BCE) through till the early Hellenistic Period. One of their main contributions was the regularisation of Tefilla. The Talmud (Taanit 1:3) records that 7 th Cheshvan, which is fifteen days after Shemini Atzeret, allowed for Jewish pilgrims returning from Jerusalem to get home to the most distant regular pilgrim reaches, such as the lands of the Euphrates, without praying for themselves to be rained upon. However, for those who lived out of Israel, (predominantly Babylonia) they instituted a switchover date which was 60 days after the start of halachic autumn (known as Tekufat Tishrei). Despite the Hebrew name referring to a Jewish month, it is describing a manifestation of the seasonal solar (rather than lunar) calendar. Even though we have Diaspora communities in all reaches of northern and southern hemispheres, with seasons and climate changing accordingly, we pray for rain according to what the Babylonian Jews (the then Diaspora hub) most needed. The 60-day figure comes from the third century Talmudic sage, Shmuel, who calculated the solar year as 365 days and 6 hours, making a Quarter or Tekufa 91 days and 7 ½ hours. This corresponded with the Julian calendar, where Tekufat Tishrei was always Sept 24 and 60 days later was Nov 22. However, in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII changed the calendar over, making adjustments for an error in the Julian Calendar. The solar year is 11 minutes and 14 seconds shorter than had been thought and the calendar had become out of kilter with the true solar year by an 11 day lag. Gregory added 10 days in October 1582 so that October 5 th became October 15 th and the spring equinox would return to March 21. England only made the switch (of 11 days) in To regulate the calendar and prevent the 11 minutes and 14 seconds from wreaking fresh havoc, Gregory set the rule of leap years, where we add one day to the calendar every four years but remove one day from the calendar every 128 years (century years, not divisible by 400). We have explained the difference in dates and the switch in calendar. A further question, if you examine older siddurim, is why the changeover date is creeping slowly forwards. Older siddurim have days earlier in December. This adjusts for an even more precise reckoning of the leap years and computation of the solar year by R Adda bar Ahava at 365 days, 5 hours, 55 minutes and 25.4 seconds! When we hit 2100, the switchover date in Diaspora will be the evening of December 5 th. We have seen the force of hurricanes and storms. May rain come as a blessing! 4 THIS WEEK S HAFTORAH BY RABBI ANDREWS The Haftorah, Yishayahu (Isaiah) chapter 54, speaks of how Jerusalem will develop in the future. The first half of the reading focuses on the physical expansion of Jerusalem, which in turn will lead to it becoming the apparent seat of God s Presence in the world. The Navi (prophet) speaks of the exiled nation of Israel as a barren woman in despair shortly to be redeemed. Sing, o fruitless woman!, he instructs her and directs her to prepare her house for children. Enlarge the site of your tent, extend the size of your dwelling, do not stint! Lengthen the ropes, and drive the pegs firm. His prophesy is directed towards the banished Jewish people, telling them to be ready for their imminent redemption from the Babylonian Exile. I have seen some posit that this Haftorah might be directed at Eretz Yisroel (Land of Israel) itself, declaring, Be ready, for our return is imminent. In passuk (verse) 9, Yishayahu makes the parallel to the story of Noah explicit. As I swore that the waters of Noah nevermore would flood the earth, so I swear that I will not be angry with you or rebuke you. The similarity to mei Noach (waters of Noah) is a matter of debate amongst the classical commentators. At its simplest level, it seems to depict the promise of redemption as being as sure as the commitment not to revisit the flood upon the Earth. The Haftorah continues by portraying Jerusalem s physical and spiritual future glory, saying that the city will be paved with precious stones and all of the city s inhabitants will be learned of God. No weapon formed against you shall succeed, and every tongue that contends with you at law you shall defeat. Such is the lot of the servants of the Lord, Such their triumph through me declares the Lord. If you find yourself at Kinloss over the course of the day, please stop by the office to say hello!
