2 Some Thoughts on the Sidra By Rabbi Laitner The roots of Maariv And he (Yaakov) encountered the Place ( BaMakom, a name of God), and stayed there, for the sun had set (Bereishit 28,11). Maariv is one of the most familiar ways of ushering in a new Jewish day at evening or night time. One of its roots is in the Torah s description of Yaakov s esoteric encounter with God, referenced in the verse above, as he flees from the mortal wrath of his brother Esau. Yaakov heads to the sanctuary of his uncle Laban, in the land of Charan (probably corresponding to modern day Turkey). The Talmud (Berachot 26b) identifies the verb, encountered as connoting prayer. When Yaakov stopped for the night, on the run, he encountered God through prayer and is thus seen as the originator of the Ma ariv (evening) prayer, following in the footsteps of his father Yitzchak and grandfather Avraham who originated the Mincha (afternoon) and Shacharit (morning) prayers respectively, according to the teaching of the Talmudic sage Rabbi Yossi ben Rabbi Chanina (ibid). Why is the name Makom, meaning place, used to refer to God rather than a more commonly used name? Several of the classic Biblical commentators note that the Talmud (Chulin 91b) explains that Yaakov knew that his ancestors had also prayed in the same place as he now found himself. The Talmud also implies that this spot was the Temple Mount. This would fit with Yaakov s naming of the place as Beit El, the house of God (rather than being the same place as the contemporary town named Beit El). On that basis Rabbi Moshe Feinstein (d. 1986), notes that the association with this place was particularly significant for Yaakov, who was in flight from his home to an openly uncertain future. Yaakov must have been wondering how to survive as a Jew in such an indeterminate exile? Rabbi Feinstein explains that Yaakov could still encounter God despite such being on the run from home. The power of prayer as an anchor to Yaakov s family traditions and as a link to God provided spiritual nourishment to sustain him, even in such a trying situation. Yaakov garnered the strength to succeed as a Jew despite his circumstances and exile. One of the sources of his strength was his prayer. This power of prayer has undoubtedly played a similar role for Yaakov s descendants throughout Jewish history. We are blessed, thank God, to live in far less trying circumstances yet can still benefit from the anchor that Maariv and our other prayers provide for us every day, especially when these link us to what it means to be a Jew, as they seemed to do for Yaakov. VAYETZE STATISTICS Vayetze is remarkable as the entire Sidra is one very long parsha (paragraph). 3 A Time to Thank We have received many touching acknowledgements of the Armistice Centenary Service last Sunday evening. The representatives of the Police, Fire and Ambulance Services have all been in touch as has Mike Freer MP. Colonel Mark Simpson, representing Her Majesty s Armed Forces wrote Thank you very much for involving us, and I was delighted to attend on behalf of the Army. I was hugely grateful for the reception I received, with many of the worshippers taking time to come and speak to me, I was genuinely made to feel welcome by everyone. The Sacks Morasha choral pieces were beautiful. The whole evening was a fitting tribute to those who have served our country in times of conflict, and those who continue to serve, preserving order and peace. We don t have a national day of Thanksgiving in this country. There were several religious days of fast or thanksgiving before Henry VIII and then the Puritans whittled them down. Many were agricultural in origin. Some Puritans even wanted to eliminate Christmas and Easter. In 1606, November 5 th was designated a day of annual National Thanksgiving marking the anniversary of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot. That day has certainly refocused on bonfires and fireworks, and I am less enthusiastic about burning effigies of political opponents than I was as a schoolkid. I think it projects wrong ideas and has amassed too many tragic associations. In America, a number of Poskim have addressed the Thanksgiving Holiday, which is celebrated there on the fourth Thursday in November. Was it appropriate for the Jewish community to join in with the feasting and festivity? While much of the celebration day is inherently secular, its origins are in Christian observance. Rav Yitzchak Hutner (born in Poland, d1980) thought its origins marked it as a Gentile holiday and therefore it was prohibited to engage. R Moshe Feinstein (born in Belarus, d1986) opined that it had become distant from its religious roots and that meal itself, and turkey as a symbolic food, had no particular religious origin. He writes that just because Gentiles like doing something (or choose to do it) with no religious motivation, we don t need to abstain. Accordingly, he sees merit in those who choose to observe the day. His preference is not to mark it with turkey on the day itself but does not criticise those who do. R JB Soloveitchik (born in Belarus, d1993) ruled that Thanksgiving was not a religious holiday, and saw no problem with its celebration. He reportedly did celebrate the day with a dinner and had no problem with turkey. Certainly, both R Moshe Feinstein and R Soloveitchik endorsed the spirit of Thanksgiving and appreciation not only for the gifts and blessings we acknowledge as coming from Hashem, but significantly, also, the freedoms and protections we enjoy at the behest of our governments, for democracy and rule of law. How much of our history has been bereft of liberty or security! As we see so many schisms in our divided society, a day of national thanksgiving is perhaps a unifying occasion that should be instituted. It was fitting that last Sunday we had occasion to offer thanks in shul, to show and to share good citizenship. My thanks to all who participated. Shabbat Shalom R Jeremy Lawrence

4 THIS WEEK S HAFTORAH BY RABBI ANDREWS The parsha this week speaks of Yaakov (Jacob) escaping to Lavan s (Laban) home and agreeing to work for seven years for the right to marry Rachel. The Haftorah, Hosheya (Hosea) 12: , invokes Yaakov s service for Rachel as a parallel to God s having brought the Jews out of Egypt and his subsequent protection of the B nei Yisrael (Jewish people) in the desert. Just as Yaakov worked resolutely towards his goal, never abandoning it in the face of various challenges, God metaphorically works continuously on our behalf. Hosheya also addresses the sinful ways of Jacob s descendants the northern tribes of Israel, which he refers to by the name of Ephraim. He attempts to persuade them to return to a more positive and deep relationship with Hashem. The Northern Kingdom was at one point highly committed to God. The Midrash (traditional lore) sees Yerovom (Jeroboam), the first king of Yisrael (Israel), receiving the Kingdom for criticising Shlomo Hamelach (King Solomon) for sleeping-in on the day of the dedication of the Temple. Chaza l portrays God as either rewarding him for his zealousness or challenging him to outperform Shlomo. Either way, Yerovom failed, the lure of power enticed him to establish a competing cultic centre to the one at the Temple. Hosheya uses analogies from nature to illustrate how Hashem will chastise Israel. Israel will disappear like the morning clouds and the dew (13:3). God will act violently, like a lion, leopard, and bear and Israel will be the prey (13:8). Hosheya mocks the people of Israel, Where now is your king? Let him save you! (13:10). The prophet uses the metaphor of marriage and faithfulness to bemoan Israel s betrayals of God. God, on the other hand, is portrayed as punishing, but consistently involved. The implication seems to be that while being warned of punishment, we are called on to match Yaakov s faithfulness to Rachel.
