1 THE YBH OF PASSAIC HILLEL THIS WEEK: GIRLS DIVISION IN FOCUS Parshas Tazria-Metzora 5 Iyar 5772 April 27, 2012 Yom HaShoah n Wednesday, April 25th, our 5th 8th grade students were privileged to hear O from Mr. Leon Goldenberg, grandfather of Riki Grossman (6G). In commemoration of Yom HaShoah, which was last week, Mr. Goldenberg spoke about Raoul Wallenberg, a non-jew, who was instrumental in saving many Jews during the Holocaust. The powerful message of The Power of One was beautifully delivered and expounded upon. The students were engaged in an interactive lecture and were inspired by Mr. Goldenberg s charismatic words. (Vayikra 13:2) Why was the person brought to Aharon, the Kohen Gadol? The Rabbi of Alexander commented on this verse: The Sages state that tzora'as is an affliction that comes because a person spoke loshon hora, against others. When people say negative things about others, they frequently rationalize that it is proper for them to say what they are saying. One common excuse is that they are telling the truth. The other person has done so much wrong that it is important to publicize what a bad person he is. They claim that they would never do this without having elevated intentions and that they are actually perfoming a mitzvah. Although their claims might sound good at first, they cause much hatred, quarrels and pain. Therefore, the person with tzora'as was sent to Aharon, the Kohen Gadol. One of the traits of Aharon was that he did everything he could to make peace between people. He then exaggerated and told untruths in order to bring about peaceful relationships between people. Whenever people quarreled, he would tell both sides that the other side was saying kind and positive things about them. When someone was told that the other person was speaking positively about him, he automatically felt positive about the other person and this greatly improved their relationship. This was the lesson that Aharon would give to the person who spoke against others: Don't justify your harming and wronging others by claiming that you want to publicize the truth. Do all that is in your power to help people feel love for one another. When we talked about sisters being nice, Rena Feder (1G-P) said, That s what sisters are for! Adina Winograd (1G-P) told us that the Hebrew term for a kosher animal chewing its cud.מעלה גרה is Shevi Mayerfeld (1G-P) told us that the only kosher fish are the ones with fins and scales. Eden Schuman (1G-P) asked how the meat from cows could be kosher if cows give milk. Class Acts 1G Mrs. Stein ince returning from our Pesach vacation, the first S grade girls are as busy as ever! We all learned about dental care from Dr. Rosenbach and even had the chance to play dentist. Dr. Kuzniar came and discussed the importance of healthy eating. We have learned the parts of the clock to help us tell time. Did you know that the numbers on the face of a clock have symmetrical partners that help us add to 12: , , We are all set for our IOWA tests and an exciting final stretch towards second grade. ======================================= Eliana Samber read the story of The Little Red Hen to the class. We connected this story to a story in our reader Digger Pig and the Turnip. 2 Learning From Our Leaders Submitted by Mrs. Estie Fried (8G Morah) s we are in this period of Sefiras HaOmer, it is A important for us to recall a gadol who left Klal Yisrael during Chol Hamoed Pesach of Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, also known as The Rav, succeeded his father as Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva University from 1941 until his death in 1993 while simultaneously leading the Jewish community of Boston and national Jewish organizations. He was the quintessential fusion of his Brisker heritage and staunch commitment to halacha with contemporary culture and philosophy. The Rav was asked many times to assume the position of Chief Rabbi of Israel, and refused each time. He explained that a rabbinate linked up with a state cannot completely be free The mere fact that from time to time halachic problems are discussed as political issues at cabinet meetings is an infringement on the sovereignty of the rabbinate. For the Rav, nothing could have more authority than Torah. His general style of lomdus reflected his grandfather, Rav Chaim Soloveitchik s Brisker methods. His talmidim though, describe an intense emotion that was infused into every shiur. A giant of halacha and philosophy, he still referred to his students as his pals. He felt that A teacher who does not lose years in the classroom and does not become one of his class cannot teach Torah successfully You do not teach anything to anyone who is below you. This is my philosophy of teaching Torah. Only someone with this perspective could be considered a foremost twentieth century thinker and educator. 3 Class Acts 2G-S Class Acts P1A-M Morah Schulman orah Schulman s kitah beis jumped right back M into school full of excitement to continue our learning after our long break. We hope everyone enjoyed our Haggadah that we worked so hard on. We hope you learned from the Divrei Torah and enjoyed the pictures, decorations, and our beautiful cover. We hope it helped add to your family s Seder. By this time of year our minds are bursting with information in the areas of Chumash, Ivrit, Pirkei Avos, Be ur Tefilla, and Yedios Klallios. We are in the middle of learning all the brachos with their accompanying songs of Shmoneh Esrei. Have you passed by our classroom and heard the beautiful singing? We are looking forward to learning the entire Shmoneh Esrei. I can t wait to see our entire class at my home on Shabbos afternoon at 215 Howard Ave. from 5:00 PM 5:30 PM for an enjoyable and yummy Pirkei Avos gathering. Morah Shoshanah n honor of Yom Ha atzmaut, Pre 1A M I sang Naomi Shemer s Eretz Yisrael Sheli, a song about the steps in building and making Eretz Yisrael beautiful and flourishing, for the whole preschool. The yeladim made posters of Eretz Yisrael, a house, a tree, a road, a bridge and musical notes. As they sang about each of these contributions to Eretz Yisrael, they held up the posters. The Pre 1Aers also taught the preschool classes an Israeli children s song and dance, Ooga, Ooga. Yom Huledet Sameach LiYisrael! Girls Gym Class Acts 2B Coach Hall he girls Physical Education Department has T been very exciting this year. We begin every class by getting into our squads. Stretching, jumping jacks, mountain climbing are some of our warm-ups exercises. Then the girls get into four straight lines and increase their heart rates by skipping, galloping, grape vine, hopping, shuffling, and running exercises. Afterwards, I explain and demonstrate the game of the day. Some examples of games we play are sideline soccer, t-ball, tennis baseball, bbk, monsterball, steal the chicken, pinball, relays, shipwreck, four corners, basketball, prisoner dodge ball, spud, handball, and many other games. The feedback I get from the teachers is all positive. The girls are considerate, kind, sweet, and respectful to me and each other. It s been a great year! 3 Mrs. Buckweitz he second graders have been working on a science T unit called Oscar s Ocean for the past month which introduced them to learning about various fish, animals, and crustaceans that live in the water. The students had fun making passports, constructing a three-dimensional model of fish that depicts the hierarchy of aquatic organisms within the food chain, and assembling whale and dolphin mobiles. Soon they will be learning about physical characteristics of fish and create a colorful underwater mural which will be displayed in the hallway for all to enjoy. The children made great strides in their academic and social growth this year and they should be proud of their accomplishments. They have wonderful imaginations which they demonstrated through creative writing stories. The children also enjoyed using their map skills to locate and learn about different places on a map. They mastered many math concepts including addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers with and without regrouping, telling time and understanding the calendar, recognizing different coin denominations and counting money, and understanding and using different graphing techniques to compare various types of data. The third grade teachers will be delighted to have such motivated and wonderful children enter their classrooms in the coming school year. 3

4 A Message From the Mechaneches Class Acts 2G ROSH CHODESH IYAR Don t just count the days, make the days count! This past Monday, the 1st through 8th grade girls enjoyed a special and meaningful assembly in honor of Rosh Chodesh Iyar. We explored together how to make.ימי הספירה our days count during the Yasher koach to the 8th grade girls for the amaz- ואהבת לרעך ing skit which portrayed a powerful lesson in ימי which we emphasize, especially during the,כמוך I was very proud to hear from Morah D vorah.הספירה Pachtman (1G) that Ayelet Bruder emulated Chani in the skit and included one of her classmates during recess! In order to generate אחדות among the grades, we played a sister game. It was very enjoyable, especially when the Morahs were called up to participate in the game! The girls received a לב lollypop as a special treat הר camping around בני ישראל depicting the concept of.כאיש אחד בלב אחד סיני The 5th 8th grade girls were introduced to a secret admirer program. It is heartwarming to see the genuine excitement for this program and camaraderie among the girls! Mrs. Shinbein he Super-Star Second Graders are so excited to explore our next unit in science T Investigating Matter! Everything around you is matter. Toys and blocks are matter. You are, too! We will observe, compare and classify different types of matter. What defines a solid, liquid and gas. Our Super-Star Second Graders will do their own investigation to create a very special, and exciting, matter changing experiment. Fun for everyone! I am so proud of everyone of our Super Second Graders. They have accomplished so many academic and social milestones. Next week we will be involved with standardized testing. No worries, we took the stress out of the test. We are so ready and prepared. To help your child at home, please keep a positive attitude, send sharpened number two pencils everyday, get lots of exercise, a good night s sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast. In second grade we have mastered so many math, science, social studies, and language arts skills.we are all ready for third grade! Awesome job, Second Grade! Morah Rabinowitz he second grade girls are happy to T be back in school after Pesach vacation. They love to learn! The girls can easily translate so many pesukim on their own without any help from morah.,שמונה עשרה We have learned most of which we daven with enthusiasm and feeling since we understand what we are saying. I m looking forward to hearing the beautiful, strong Kol Hatorah coming from our classroom until the end of this school year. 5 Yom Ha atzmaut at YBH T he Students of YBH enjoyed a delicious falafel lunch!! A special thank you to the PTA! They also had a very exciting program in the afternoon with an energized Israeli flag game. The girls displayed camaraderie and good sportsmanship while having a great time, especially when Mrs. Hebel and Morah Stern joined in for the last round! The program culminated in the girls using their creativity to decorate a cake like the Israeli flag! 5
