Turn your clocks one hour ahead this Motzei Shabbos, as we spring forward to Daylight Savings Time. PLEASE NOTE: Next Friday, March 18 we resume our 2:30 Friday dismissal. 2 KONEI OLAM elcome to Russia!! This week, we started to learn W about the idea of Noseh B ol feeling other people s pain and doing what we can to help them. (What Hashgacha Pratis that we are starting our annual Od Yosef Chai campaign this week!) We discussed the idea of Kiruv and helping Jews know more about their Yiddishkeit, and some of the classes had a diamond contest to practice helping out their classmates. REGISTRATION hank you to all those who submitted their completed T registration packet in time for the early bird deadline. If you were not able to register yet, we strongly encourage you to register as soon as possible so as to reserve a spot for your child(ren), and to avail yourself of the largest possible tuition reduction available to you. Please be reminded that after April 6th the registration fee increases. As a reminder, in order to facilitate immediate processing, tuition reduction forms and supporting documentation need to be returned together with the registration and fees. ZAYIN ADAR SEUDAH OF THE CHEVRA KADISHA THIS SUNDAY he Annual Zayin Adar Seudah of the Chevra Kadisha T will be held this Sunday evening, March 13 in the Ted and Ethelyn Lieblich Auditorium (Toras Emes Social Hall.) This year we are fortunate to have as our guest speaker, Rabbi Dovid Lehrfield, Mara D Asra of Young Israel of Greater Miami. The schedule is as follows: 6:15 Mincha (with Vayechal) Followed by review class (@6:40) 7:50 Maariv 8:00 Seuda Members of the community who wish to have a share in the important work of the Chevra Kadisha are invited to sign up as sponsors for a $50 contribution. Sponsors are welcome to join us at the Seuda. Members of the Chevra are urged to encourage their friends to participate in the work of the Chevra in this manner. ASSEMBLIES ur assemblies will take place this Tuesday, March O 15 featuring 3B and 3G. Official uniforms must be worn all day on Tuesday, including white knee socks for the girls. OD YOSEF CHAI ur annual Matanos O L Evyonim campaign for the needy in Eretz Yisroel is underway. Infromation was sent home with your children. Deadline is this Friday, March 18. Let s try to top last year s total of $3,000! PURIM CARDS D on t forget to order beautiful Purim cards which are available from the Parents Association, through the school office. Suggested donation is $2.00 per card (including envelope) or 10 cards for $ If you can t come in to the office, order forms are attached for your convenience.

3 SHUSHAN PURIM ACTIVITIES O n Shushan Purim, Monday, March 21, school is from 9 AM to 2 PM. All children are expected to come to school in costume, bring $3 cash for the carnival and have already ordered hot dogs, chips and soda for our barbecue lunch. No on the spot orders will be taken at the barbecue. See attached order form. Please remember that hot lunch will not be served on Shushan Purim, so if you are not ordering hot dogs, don t forget to send lunch to school with your child(ren). Parent volunteers are greatly needed for various aspects of the carnival and barbecue including shopping beforehand. Please call the school office if you are able to help. Our new feature, a talent show, will include 3 (2 minute maximum) shows from each of the classes grades 3,4, & 5. A maximum of 2 students per show. Teachers will be holding classwide auditions this coming week. Show us your stuff! 5 Erev Shabbos Parashas Vayikra 5771 Dear Parents, As we begin to read Sefer Vayikra this Shabbos, we are reminded of how we express our yearning, at every opportunity for the rebuilding of the Beis HaMikdash and the renewed opportunity to bring Korbanos, sacrifices. What are Korbanos? They are a physical manifestation of our attempt to connect with Hashem as the name implies Korban to bring korov close. We give up something of ours, dedicate it to Hashem, and thereby strengthen our relationship. What means do we use nowadays, when we do not have the opportunity to approach Hashem in this manner? We have Tefilla Avoda Shebalev the service of the heart. It is a much greater challenge to maintain focus on approaching Hashem without the assistance of a physical prop, so to speak. With a korban, standing in the awesomeness of the Beis Hamikdash it was relatively easy to feel a closeness to Hashem as one gave up something of value, that could be seen and felt. In our times, we are called upon to approach Hashem, purely through concentrating our hearts and words, something that requires much greater focus. If Tefilla is a challenge for adults, how much more so for the children. With at best a bare-bones understanding of the meaning of Tefilla, we ask the children to say words that they do not understand, for an extended period of time, and it is a formidable task. How can we help? What can parents do to make Tefilla more meaningful to their children? One could set about teaching the meaning and intent of the words in davening but that is not a recommended approach for the vast majority of parents for a variety of reasons. Leave that up to us in school. However, there is one thing that all of us can do demonstrate in word and deed, that Tefilla is IMPORTANT! This does not occur through sermons and reprimands. It does not occur through cajoling and sticker charts. True teaching comes through role modeling. If Tefilla is important to you, don t rush through it. If Tefilla is important, don t do other things while you re davening. If you truly feel the importance of Tefilla make it to Minyan even when it s difficult. And, if Tefilla is truly important to you -don t talk in shul. Smart principles of Chinuch must be applied to our young developing daveners. Bringing them to shul before they re ready will teach them to not have reverence for a holy place. Forcing them to say words of davening that are meaningless to them, will cause irreparable harm to any future interest in Tefilla. Let the children s interest and enthusiasm for davening guide you even if your child spends much less time on daily Tefilla than you feel is appropriate don t pressure them. If they seem to speed through davening appreciate that they went through the motions, and demonstrate without fanfare, how it should be done. Part of our daily Tefilos include beseeching Hashem to bring us back to the glorious days of bringing Korbanos. Let us show our children what an opportunity and zechus it is to be able to approach Hashem through Tefilla even though we currently don t have the privilege of Korbanos. If we do a good job davening, Hashem will undoubtedly bring us and our children up to the next level, as in the days of old, IY H.
