The fast commemorates five tragic events that occurred on this date: 1. Moses broke the tablets when he saw the Jewish people worshipping the Golden Calf. 2. During the Babylonian siege on Jerusalem, the Jews were forced to cease offering the daily sacrifices due to the lack of cattle. 4. An idol was placed in the Holy Temple. 5. The walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans, in 69 CE, after a lengthy siege. (Three weeks later, after the Jews put up a valiant struggle, the Romans destroyed the second Holy Temple on the 9th of Av.) The Jerusalem Talmud maintains that this is also the date when the Babylonians breached the walls of Jerusalem on their way to destroying the first Temple. During the three weeks, weddings and other joyful events are not held during this period; like mourners, we do not cut our hair, and various pleasurable activities are limited or proscribed. The three weeks concludes with the fast of the 9th of Av (Sunday, July 29), the date when both Holy Temples were set aflame. 2 SHACHARIT PRAYER SCHEDULE Sunday :00 am Monday-Friday..7:00 am Breakfast following weekday services Mincha - Maariv In cherished memory of R'Yeshaya Aryeh ben Menashe Treitel obm SUNDAY - THURSDAY Mincha - 8:35 pm Maariv - 9:15 pm **This week only** Tuesday Mincha 8:15 Mircia s Mini Van Car Service PINCHAS ALIYAH SUMMARY General Overview: Phinehas (Pinchas) is rewarded for his bravery. A census of the Israelites is taken. The daughters of Zelophehad successfully argue for a portion in the land of Israel. Joshua is ordained Moses' successor. G d relays to Moses the details of all the holiday sacrifices. First Aliyah: Last week's reading concluded with Moabite and Midianite women seducing Jewish men and enticing them to idol worship. At that point, Phinehas unilaterally executed a Jewish leader along with the Midianite princess with whom he was cohabiting. This week's reading opens with G d praising Phinehas, and rewarding his bravery by granting priesthood to him and his descendants. G d then commands the Jews to punish the Midianites by hounding and smiting them. The fulfillment of this command is described in next week's reading. G d commands Moses and Elazar the High Priest to conduct a census of all males over the age of twenty. Second Aliyah: The Israelites are counted, and the totals are given for each of the twelve tribes. The grand total of all the tribes combined is 601,730. The tribe of Levi is not included in this census. Third Aliyah: As per G d's command, the land of Israel was to be divided amongst all those who were counted in this census. The location of each tribe's portion would be determined by lottery. The tribe of Levi is now counted. There were 23,000 Levite males above the age of one month. The daughters of Zelophehad approached Moses and stated that their father had died leaving behind only daughters. They requested to receive their father's portion in the land of Israel. Moses relayed their request to G d. SHABBOS AFTERNOONS 15 MINUTES BEFORE MINCHA Last SHOOT: Can one use frozen Challah for Lechem Mishnah? Answer: A brocho can only be made on that which one is going to be eating presently. As such, one must be able to eat at least one of the challahs at the time of the making of the brocho. [1] The second challah however, is only to remind us of the double portion of mannah that fell for the Jews in the desert on the eve of Shabbos. As such, one does not need to eat of that challah. However, it still needs to be edible. [2] There are therefore those who permit frozen challah for if one chose to, one can have his meal extend for enough time for the second challah to defrost. [3] Rabbi S Z Oirbach a h maintains that one should indeed extend ones meal long enough for it to defrost. 4 WHAT SHLUCHIM S KIDS TAUGHT ME Dr. David Nesenoff t's easy to get there. I took American I Airlines to Buenos Aires, a local TAM flight to Paraguay, a delayed plane back to Buenos Aires, a car to the river, a boat to Uruguay and then again down the river to Argentina. It's just another Chabad speaking tour. But there's never "just" when it comes to the world of Chabad. I remember a couple of years ago when my wife and I drove up to Morristown, N.J. to see our son Adam for the yeshiva's parent Shabbos. My old college roommate called and asked what I was up to. I told him that I was heading up to my son's Chabad yeshiva. He then started yelling at me, "You got to get him out of there! They'll brainwash him! They have bars on the windows! Are you crazy?!" I tried to switch the topic, so I asked him what he was doing. He said to me, "My wife and I are flying out to California to visit our son for parent visiting weekend." I asked him as to where his son was. And he replied, "He's in Los Angeles at a drug rehabilitation facility." The irony, absurdity, and reality escaped him. The Rebbe used to say, and I understand he said it only twice but it has been endlessly repeated, "Ker a velt heint." And he didn't say it softly. The Rebbe proclaimed it like a charge to his cavalry, "KER A VELT HEINT!" "TURN THE WORLD UPSIDE DOWN TODAY!" I had initially wondered why such a peaceful man would demand such a thing. He didn't say it metaphorically; he was not a poet. When he said to go to 4 l Mosaic Express Hong Kong or El Paso or Madrid or Dublin, he meant go. So when this Rebbe said to turn the world upside down today, he meant it and he meant "today!" What could he have possibly been saying? If we turn the world upside down everything would fall out of its place. But as all of us look at this world of ours, we see mass hysteria over the child who wants to learn Torah and deep sympathy for the heroin user; our tender Jewish students are kidnapped and killed with a yawning world of apathy while the blood thirsty terrorists are exalted by the nations of the globe. Our world is not merely off kilter; it is not just a little unbalanced. No. Our world is totally upside down. I think we have all come to realize that when the Rebbe said to turn the world upside down today, he wanted us to do so in order to turn this upside down world upside down...in order to make it right side up. Many liberal movements talk about Tikun Olam, repairing the world, as if there is a gentle tear that needs stitching. The world is completely in an opposite mode and the Rebbe knew very well that it will need more than readjusting; he demanded, "KER A VELT HEINT!" A n d s o f o r G i m m e l T amuz commemorations I traveled in this world to Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay coordinated by the very talented and capable shluchim Rabbi Levi and Etti Silberstein. I was the keynote speaker for a joint gathering of 20 Chabad houses with an audience of 2,000 at the Sheraton in Buenos Aires. I was honored to do so. Last year the Rebbe's secretary Rabbi Yehuda Leib Groner spoke and the year before the presenter was Rabbi Avraham Shemtov. As a speaker, I endeavor to inspire and motivate my audiences. But I also personally need to be recharged; and I was re-zapped and re -jolted and refocused in a small shul in Paraguay. I met 12 year old Chana Feigelstock in Asuncion, Paraguay, the daughter of the kind and calm Shaliach Rabbi Levi Feigelstock. Reb Levi is a man of patience with a generous smile and genuine humor. He explained with soft sarcasm, "The traffic signals here in Paraguay are just suggestions and recommendations." His multi-talented wife, Miriam, during my visit was under the weather, and G-d willing she is fully recovered and back to all her good Shlichus and family work. But their remarkable daughter Chana prepared, baked and looked after her siblings and was host to me all the while setting up for my upcoming audience's buffet... AND substituted for her mother, almost single-handedly, running the community children's program. Chana attended my presentation in the evening and asked thoughtful questions... and then after the audience left and went home, she continued her work and put all

As a speaker, I endeavor to inspire and motivate my audiences. But I also personally need to be recharged; and I was re-zapped, re-jolted and refocused in a small shul in Paraguay. the remaining food away and helped clean up with her younger siblings under her care. Chana didn't need to be asked or told or instructed. She knew what to do. She speaks Hebrew and Spanish and English and some Yiddish and Portuguese thrown in as well. She smiles with such pure enjoyment while doing everything she does. She is aware, sharp and alert to all that is going on around her Chabad house and she breathes the mission of her parents. Turning this upside down world around to make it right and correct certainly sounds like a huge undertaking, but the Rebbe's Chana does it with ease and grace and holiness. Indeed I try my very best to inspire my Shluchim and their communities, but the children of the Shluchim continue to allow me to meet the Rebbe and understand the world he wishes to create. En masse, the secular semi-comatose youth of the world are glued to the headset, television, twitter, Facebook, movies and magazines, while the Chanas and Mendels and Devorahs are resuscitating neshamas. And as teenagers are chauffeured off to the mall and college students loiter at the bar, all the while leaving their dirty dish on the table and socks on the floor, Chaya, Saraleh and Mendel are creating, producing and designing an environment that changes the very direction of the universe. Every psychologist, sociologist, survey and philosophy claims that we are the product of our environment. You are who you are because of your parents, school, town, community, government and peers. But the Rebbe said, "A chosid macht a svivah." "A Jew makes his environment." The chosid enters and it becomes a chosideshe place. Peer pressure is replaced with independent initiative. Shmutz and beer transform into Shma Yisroel and Birkat HaMazon. For sure, it takes a little more nerve and chutzpah and forwardness for anyone to go against the flow, especially for a young one to do so. But the Rebbe said to turn the world upside down and the way to do that is by our young ones creating an environment that is contrary to that which is being detrimentally dished out and dangerously slopped into society. Transforming the environment and turning around the world does not take place by conformity and comfort ability; mitzvos and mivtzoyim are needed. Because of 12 year old Chana in Paraguay, the Rebbe's hope for the world is in full force. During the Rebbe's Yahrtzeit there is a desire and extra push to connect with the Rebbe's life. We watch videos, read biographical books and gather together; we talk and listen to speakers like myself. But ultimately the children of Chabad are the holy conduits; they are the eternal living breathing kaddish that celebrates the Rebbe. As the 20th year of the Rebbe's physical passing passes and a new decade begins, we can rediscover his sustaining soul when we give extra attention and praise and care to our children; they are literally the children of Israel. For them we must strengthen our efforts to turn the world upside down in the only way we know how... we must make sure there are extra tfillin wrapped; we must strongly encourage all our women of valor to light Shabbos candles; and for all to do mitzvos and mivtzoyim. And may Chana of Paraguay and all our children be blessed with health, safety and sanctity as they bring the coming of the Moshiach... after they've helped us turn this world right side up. May Hashem bless the children of Israel... and the children of Shluchim. Mosaic Express l 5

The Road to Peace By Tali Loewenthal e the Jewish people want peace; we W believe that peace is one of the greatest goals in life. The Sages tell us that the Torah was given in order to bring peace into the world. The concept of peace means, of course, a pleasant and positive atmosphere, where there is nothing harsh. And yet the concept of the "covenant of peace," which we find in this week's Torah reading, was a reward for Pinchas, the grandson of Aaron, following his forceful action at the end of the previous week's reading. There we read that a Shimonite prince was publicly cohabiting with a gentile woman. Moses and Aaron were weeping, they felt powerless, but Pinchas took action. He was a strong man, a zealot. But does that action express the virtue of peace? Yet G d says that in reward for his action "I give him My covenant of Peace." On the one hand, Pinchas was a critic, on the other, G d gives him the "Covenant of Peace." The Sages tell us that Pinchas lived very long and was the same person whom we meet in the Book of Kings, named Elijah, who is the subject of this week's haftorah. In the haftorah, he is also seen as a zealot. He sees the moral and spiritual weakness of the Jewish people of his time and is deeply upset about it. He travels through the desert back to Mount Sinai where the Torah was given, as if to meet more directly with the Divine, and he declares that the Jewish people are not keeping their Covenant with G d. On the one hand, Pinchas or Elijah was a critic, who could see the negative aspects of (Continued from page 2) Fourth Aliyah: G d agreed to Zelophehad's daughters' request. Moses is then instructed the laws of inheritance. Included in these laws is a daughter's right to her father's estate if he does not leave any sons. G d tells Moses to climb to the top of Mount Abarim from where he would see the Promised Land before he died. Moses asks G d to appoint a worthy individual to succeed him. G d instructs Moses to endow Joshua with some of his spiritual powers and publicly name him as his successor. Fifth Aliyah: From this point until the end of this week's reading, the Torah details the 6 l Mosaic Express people's behavior and tried to take action against them, as in the case of Pinchas or as in Elijah's contest with the Priests of Baal on Mount Carmel. On the other hand, G d gives him the Covenant of Peace, which implies seeing people in a positive way. The Torah also says that Pinchas is given the role of being a kohen (priest). The kohen is described as a man of kindness, like Aaron, the first kohen, who saw the good in everyone. Similarly in the case of Elijah. The Sages tell us that because Elijah complained that the Jewish people are not keeping their Covenant, for all time he is present at every Brit Milah, when a Jewish boy enters the Covenant of Circumcision. He is able to see that indeed the Jewish people are keeping the Covenant. Hence at a Brit Milah a chair is set for Elijah the Prophet. The Lubavitcher Rebbe comments that, like Pinchas and Elijah, we have to be able to combine two contrary aspects. On the one hand, to be able to act firmly when necessary, to put right that which is wrong, or to protect from danger. On the other, to be able to see the goodness in a person, his or her potential, their positive achievements. A further step is when these two approaches are combined: by seeing the goodness in a person, one helps them to put right that which needs correction. The two features of Pinchas and Elijah respectively, become one. This is the road to genuine peace. Hence the Sages tell us that Elijah will usher in the Redemption, the time of ultimate peace, in which everything negative will be transformed to good. Then the enemy of every kind in Hebrew, oyev will be transformed to ohev, friend. Then indeed there will be peace various communal sacrifices which were offered in the Tabernacle and Temple at designated times. This section discusses the twice-daily "Tamid" sacrifice, as well as the additional sacrifices offered on Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh (the first day of the Jewish month). Sixth Aliyah: This section discusses the sacrifices offered on Passover, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur. The Torah also discusses some of the laws related to these holidays. Seventh Aliyah: This section discusses the sacrifices offered on the holidays of Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret. Inside Job By Tzvi Freeman Fixing up the world is always an inside job. What do we fix? That which we need. When do we fix anything? When we are in need. Why do we fix anything? Because our destiny is tied to the destiny of that which we repair and improve. So it is with the food we eat, the bodies in which we live, the business in which we work, and the community in which we live. Nobody can come from the outside, stay outside, and make real, lasting, beneficial change. -Bati Legani 5714 and finally A man joined a multinational company as a trainee. On his first day he dialed the cafeteria and shouted into the phone, "Get me a coffee quickly!" The voice from the other side responded, "You fool. You've dialed the wrong extension! Do you know who you're talking to, dumbo?" "No" replied the trainee. "It's the CEO of the company, you fool!" The trainee shouted back, "And do you know who YOU are talking to, you fool?" "No," replied the CEO. "Good!" replied the trainee as he put down the phone.

An inspiring story for your Shabbos table HERE S my STORY GREET EVERY HUMAN BEING WITH A KIND FACE RABBI BORUCH ZAICHYK ב ה שבת פרשת פינחס, י ד תמוז, תשע ד Shabbos Parshas Pinchas, July 12, 2014 My father, Rabbi Chaim Zaichyk, was one of the great baalei mussar, leaders of the Jewish ethical tradition; he authored some twentythree books on the subject of mussar, which influenced Jews in America and in Israel. My father wanted me, as part of my religious education, to be exposed to all the Gedolim, the Torah giants of the generation. This is how I came to meet the Lubavitcher Rebbe, although we were not of a chasidic background. As a young man, I chose to study at the Telzer Yeshiva, a mussar yeshiva in Cleveland, Ohio, and on one vacation break when I was back home, my father decided to take me to see the Rebbe. I remember it was Tuesday night, or more accurately, since it was 3 a.m., really Wednesday morning. The Chabad Headquarters was full of people waiting to see the Rebbe. The Rebbe s secretary, Rabbi Hodakov said to us, You have fifteen minutes with the Rebbe. But my father answered him, As long as the Rebbe wants us, that s how long we ll stay there. As it happened we went in at about 3:15 and left at 5 a.m. My father and the Rebbe became involved in a deep discussion. I remember the Rebbe saying that the Chasidic Movement has taken over the task of the Mussar Movement in influencing Jews, and my father agreed. Then the Rebbe said that Chabad in particular incorporated quite a lot of mussar in its teachings. And again my father agreed and added that this is why many baalei mussar like him were in close contact with Chabad, due to the common understanding. When our visit was nearly over, the Rebbe turned to me and asked me what I was learning in yeshiva. I said, Rebbe, are you going to test me? And he said, Heaven forbid, but every meeting should produce a Torah insight, so let s hear. And then he asked me a question about a rabbinic disagreement recorded in the Talmud. I answered him and, in turn, I posed a question of my own. He said, You have already asked this question of someone else, didn t you? I admitted I had but I was curious about the Rebbe s answer. And the Rebbe gave me exactly the same answer as the other rabbi, and he did so very quickly, in seconds. Then he said: I see you remember the Talmud well, but you should also remember this important thing that whenever you meet anyone, be friendly. Hevay mekabel es ha adam b saver panim yafos Greet every human being with a kind face. Those were the words he used. He went on to say that a kind face, a smile, will influence another person much more than anything else. I was seventeen or eighteen year old at the time and I didn t realize the value of this advice. But later, when I entered the Rabbinate, I remembered it and applied it very often. My second audience with the Rebbe was in My father had decided to immigrate to Israel and he wanted to say good-bye to the Rebbe, and again, he took me along. By this time I was already working as a rabbi in South Africa I had been there for about a half year and I continued on reverse An oral history project dedicated to documenting the life of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. The story is one of thousands recorded in the 900 videotaped interviews conducted to date. Please share your comments and suggestions. mystory@jemedia.org

continued from reverse took the opportunity to ask the Rebbe how best to bring estranged Jews close to Yiddishkeit. I told him that I was particularly trying to work with young people in this regard. He said, That s good, and I understand your emphasis on this, but don t neglect anybody. Then he added, Remember what I told you the last time you were here? Greet everyone with a smile? I was surprised that he remembered our conversation considering how many people must have passed through his door in the meantime. I told him that I did remember his advice, and I was trying to apply it. He added, That is the best way. And then the Rebbe totally amazed me by giving me very specific insights into South African Jewry. Although he had never been there, he seemed to know everything about this community, its roots and activities, and he advised me how I could best make an impact. I was relatively new in South Africa, and I was attached to one large synagogue which counted 800 families as members. But there were many more synagogues and factions in fact there were 29 synagogues in Johannesburg. As well, my approach was very American, but the South African Jews were very European in their mentality. The Rebbe understood all this and his words of advice helped me greatly in succeeding in this community. He told me that European Jews, especially Lithuanian Jews, were rather reserved people, and the gladhanding American approach could feel overwhelming to them. He advised me to take it more slowly and be less forward. And his advice worked very well. Before we left, he asked, How about you give me a blessing? And my father demurred saying that his blessing was that of a simple person. To this, the Rebbe s comment was, You re not such a simple person, Reb Chaim, your blessing will go a long way. And to me he said, And you re not a simple person either. Anyway, it was a humorous interlude, and we wished the Rebbe success and blessing, and he wished us success and blessing. He blessed me to be successful in bringing people close to Yiddishkeit which, over the years, I managed to do. As we were walking out, something humorous happened. We had been instructed each time by the Rebbe s secretary that the proper way to leave the Rebbe s office was to walk backwards, in other words, not to turn away from him. So, as we went to leave, we started backing up, and the Rebbe smiled. He said to us, Reb Chaim, Reb Boruch you re not followers of mine, so turn around and walk out like a mentsch. So that s what we did and again we thanked the Rebbe for his blessings which he had given us during the course of the audience. In my work, I always remembered his advice. And I never forgot him his deeply penetrating eyes which seemed to look right through you. And how quickly his mind worked you would mention something and the Rebbe was already way ahead of you on the whole thing. As I said, my father made sure that, as part of my religious education, I was exposed to Gedolim, the Torah giants of the generation. But of the many Gedolim that I met, what I experienced with the Rebbe, I never experienced with anyone else.
