May your naches - and grandchildren - increase. b) Error in the Mazal Tov last week to the Benedeks on the birth of their grandson, Moishe Yehoshua. The birthdate was March 14th and not March 18th. MAZAL TOV once again. WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES: a) MAZAL TOV to members Billy & Sandra Rubin who celebrated their wedding anniversary on March 29th. Wishing them many more happy and healthy years together with their loving family and friends. b) MAZAL TOV to our beloved VP Fred Rudy and his cherished wife, Lillian, who celebrate their 54th (3 times

2 chai!) wedding anniversary on April 4. May they enjoy many more years together in love, good health and happiness. The Rudys are now in Israel to celebrate the wedding of their granddaughter Tzipora that will take place B H this Sunday, March 31st. Wishing much nachas to the new couple for many years to come. WELCOME: A warm welcome to Rabbi Banon s father-in law Reb Levy Yitzhak and his wife visiting from New York, and welcome also to the Rabbi s nephew Shalom, visiting once again. Shalom is easily recognizable as a member of the local Chabad National basketball team. PASSOVER: Erev Pesach is exactly 3 weeks away, starting this year on Erev Shabbat, Friday April 19th. Our annual passover Bulletin should be finished shortly and will be available to all in house or by mail. REFUAH SHLEMA: a) A REFUAH SHLEMA to Irving Zwirek, long-time YIC member who has now moved to Miamonides Geriatric Centre in Cote.St. Luc. Irving would very much appreciate our shul members taking the time to visit him as he did for many of us throughout the years. We wish Irving all the best and he is in our thoughts always. And an appropriate YASHIR KOACH to Carmi Levy, Irving s son-in-law who penned some very poingant words and thoughts on Facebook as he visited Irving s new premises. 4 PARSHAT HASHAVUA - WEEKLY TORAH PORTION The Parshah in a Nutshell TAZRIA Leviticus 12:1 13:59 The Parshah of Tazria continues the discussion of the laws of tumah v taharah, ritual impurity and purity. A woman giving birth should undergo a process of purification, which includes immersing in a mikvah (a naturally gathered pool of water) and bringing offerings to the Holy Temple. All male infants are to be circumcised on the eighth day of life. Tzaraat (often mistranslated as leprosy ) is a supra-natural plague, which also can afflict garments. If white or pink patches appear on a person s skin (dark red or green in garments), a kohen is summoned. Judging by various signs, such as an increase in size of the afflicted area after a seven-day quarantine, the kohen pronounces it tamei (impure) or tahor (pure). A person afflicted with tzaraat must dwell alone outside of the camp (or city) until he is healed. The afflicted area in a garment is removed; if the tzaraat spreads or recurs, the entire garment must be burned.

5 MEMORY LANE # 15 (EDITED) SECOND ENTRY FROM THE FIRST BULLETIN OF THE YOUNG ISRAEL OF CHOMEDEY MARCH 1962 EDITION Morning services are now being held every morning at 7:00 A.M. in our new chapel and evening services are being held at 8:00 P.M under the supervision of our Rabbi and Mr. Michael Schayniak our Gabbai. We are very fortunate to have quite a few members who have attended services regularly during the past month, and here are their names: Michael Schayniak, Alter Essner, Abraham Kleiman, Reverend Cantor M.Muhlstock, Irving Pivnik, Zigmund Neufeld, Morris Winer, Sonny Altman, Harvey Katz, Lou Lubiner, Saul Linds, I.Rosensveig, N.Fleisler, Harry Axelrad, Morris Leeman, Sam Byer, Jack Berbrier, I.Baichman, Irving Cohtheil, Alec Bincovitch, Louis Barmash, George Abramovitz, Solly Huberman, Marvin Katz, Israel Segal, Nathan Feffergrad, Michael Kaplan, Harry Koczerginski, Isadore Rosensweig, and Yehudi Hendler. Thank you to these members who are always there for those who must say Kaddish. JUNIOR CONGREGATION We have instituted an innovation in our Synagogue. The Junior Congregation consisting of the children of our members now conducts its own Sabbath Services weekly in the Chapel. It has been organized by Morris Winer and Hy Cohen. INTER SYNAGOGUE YOUTH COUNCIL On Feb. 4th, 100 young delegates from 3 Synagogues met in our main hall to form a Youth Council in our area. They were from Beth Hamedrash Hagodol, Young Israel of Val Royal, and our own congregation. After a dessert luncheon, elections were held where our own Howard Friedman was elected President. KIDDISH AND SHALLOSH SEUDOTH Donating a Kiddish or a Shallosh Seudoth meal in memory of a Yahrzeit or to celebrate a happy event is customary.
