At the same time I would like to welcome members of the Simon family who are with us this morning and joining in the celebration. Florence s children Rosalie and Rubin from Montreal; Michael Simon from Israel and Steve Simon from Rhode Island. Grandchidren visiting with us today are Myron and Alana from Toronto; Shaun and Vanessa from Montreal and Zahava Schwartzman and Eric Szomozi from Montreal. And kineinehora a few great grandchildren as well. May you all celebrate many more simchas with your mother and grandmother - and with each other - in good health for many more years to come - and G-D willing, always at our shul. Rabbi Banon s Class: There will be no Rabbi s class this week. Rabbi Halperin s Class: Will take place this week on Thursday, November 15th, after Ma ariv services, around 8:00 PM. All are invited to attend and participate in some spiritual nourishment. Yahrzeits: This coming Friday Nov 16th - 8 Kislev - Our Cohen Gadol Ralph Levine has Yahrzeit for his beloved daughter Lori Z L. A minyan will be required Friday morning at 7 AM as well as the Thursday evening before at 7:30 PM, and of course for Erev Shabbat on Friday at 4:05 PM. Please make every effort to attend. 2 Liquor donations: a) On Tuesday Nov 6th, Fred Rudy finished the last of his cancer treatments, and so to celebrate the happy occasion Lillian and Fred have donated a bottle, with thanks to all their friends for their support, and to Hashem for His guidance. Results will only be known on January 9th B H, and in the interim, we all join Fred and Lillian in praying for Fred s complete REFUAH SHLEMA. And by the way, this is not just any bottle the Ruyds donated; Fred believes it s a vintage from their son s Bar Mitzvah in October 1984, the last bottle left from that Bar Mitzvah - finally! Rabbi Banon s Picture: With respect to the photos I sent out asking everyone to find Rabbi Banon in the class photo of 5000 Lubavitcher shluchim, I personally had no such luck because I m colour blind - I just couldn t tell black from black. But Fred Rudy found Rabbi Banon right away. He s the opposite of all the rest. Rabbi Banon has a black beard and a black hat, whereas all the others have a black hat and a black beard. Simple, no??? Birthdays: A quiet day for birthdays today, making the only one we have stand out. MAZAL TOV to Thelma and Dave Smith as they celebrated their daughter-in-law s birthday on Rosh Chodesh Kislev, Nov 8th - HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Marina Smith, and many many more ad 120! Anniversaries: MAZAL TOV to Jean & Meyer Rabinovitch, celebrating their 56th anniversary tomorrow Sunday on November 11th. Many more in good health. Hannukah: Three weeks left until our Young Israel Family Hanukkah Party on Sunday night Dec 2 on the first night of Hanukkah. Admission is FREE, the food is FREE, heise frish latkes are FREE, a shnapps or two are FREE, and FREE is always good; but in order for everyone to enjoy and partake in all of the above FREEBIES, we need to know who s coming, so we have enough food for everyone. Please, call the office and let us know how many in your party are coming. It would be a shame if more than expected turn up, and we run short of food. And to remind you further, on Sat night Dec 8th, exactly 4 weeks from today, the Young Israel of Chomedey and Shaar Shalom are sponsoring our 3rd Annual Gala Dinner-Dance Party. Space is extremely limited, tickets are selling as fast we can light the Hanukkah candles; so please act NOW and don t be disappointed. REMEMBRANCE DAY: On a more somber note, tomorrow Nov 11th is Remembrance Day, a time to honour all those who fell so that we are free. A special time also to remember the Jewish Soldiers of Canada, of all wars who gave their lives for Canada s Freedom. See the attached poster for details of the Remembrance Day Ceremony taking place tomorrow at the de la Savanne cemetery at the monument honouring our Jewish War Dead. Refuah Shelma: a) A REFUAH SHLEMA to Jack Sculnick, long time member of our shul, and father and father-in-law of Reesa and Dov Midlash, who is in the hospital recuperating from an undisclosed ailment. We wish him a speedy recovery. b) and an ongoing REFUAH SHLEMA to all members and family members who continue to recuperate from a myriad of ailments and ilnesses.

4 PARSHAT HASHAVUA - WEEKLY TORAH PORTION The Parshah in a Nutshell Vayeitzei Genesis 28:10 32:3 Jacob leaves his hometown of Beersheba and journeys to Charan. On the way, he encounters the place and sleeps there, dreaming of a ladder connecting heaven and earth, with angels climbing and descending on it; G d appears and promises that the land upon which he lies will be given to his descendants. In the morning, Jacob raises the stone on which he laid his head as an altar and monument, pledging that it will be made the house of G d. In Haran, Jacob stays with and works for his uncle Laban, tending Laban s sheep. Laban agrees to give him his younger daughter, Rachel whom Jacob loves in marriage, in return for seven years labor. But on the wedding night, Laban gives him his elder daughter, Leah, instead a deception Jacob discovers only in the morning. Jacob marries Rachel, too, a week later, after agreeing to work another seven years for Laban. Leah gives birth to six sons Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun and a daughter, Dinah, while Rachel remains barren. Rachel gives Jacob her handmaid, Bilhah, as a wife to bear children in her stead, and two more sons, Dan and Naphtali, are born. Leah does the same with her handmaid, Zilpah, who gives birth to Gad and Asher. Finally, Rachel s prayers are answered and she gives birth to Joseph. Jacob has now been in Charan for fourteen years, and wishes to return home. But Laban persuades him to remain, now offering him sheep in return for his labor. Jacob prospers, despite Laban s repeated attempts to swindle him. After six years, Jacob leaves Charan in stealth, fearing that Laban would prevent him from leaving with the family and property for which he labored. Laban pursues Jacob, but is warned by G d in a dream not to harm him. Laban and Jacob make a pact on Mount Gal-Ed, attested to by a pile of stones, and Jacob proceeds to the Holy Land, where he is met by angels.

WHAT S YOUR NAME? by Zev Steinberg Little boy, what s your name, do you have one? Sweet baby, just eight days, what should we call you? I have heard the sacred circumcision postponed for jaundiced yellow, but never before for bloodshed red. Is your name Shalom? We long for peace in this troubled world. I hope you are Shalom. Is your name Nachum? Oh, how we need to be comforted in our grief. I hope you are Nachum. Is your name Raphael? Our broken hearts and bleeding souls need healing. I hope you are Raphael. You should have been carried high into the congregation on Shabbat morning - passed from loving hands to loving hands - on a cushioned pillow to receive your Jewish name. Instead your elders fell and were carried out on stretchers in plastic bags. Their names on tags. Is your name Moshe? Our unbearable anguish and rage demands justice. I hope you are Moshe. Is your name Ariel? We need the ferocious strength of lions to protect our people. I hope you are Ariel. Is your name Barak? We need courageous warriors to vanquish our enemies. I hope you are Barak. The blood on Shabbat morning was supposed to be covenantal not sacrilegious, sacramental not sacrificial, sacred not unholy. The tears were supposed to be of boundless joy not bottomless sorrow. The cries were supposed to be mazel tov not the mourner s kaddish. Is your name Simcha? We need an end to sadness by bringing joy into our world. I hope you are Simcha. Is your name Yaron? We need an end to mourning by bringing song into our lives. I hope you are Yaron. Is your name Matan? We need the gift of children who will bring a better tomorrow. I hope you are Matan. So little boy, what s your name? Take them all if you will. Take a thousand names. Be peace and Comfort and Healing. Be Justice and Strength and Courage. Be Joy and Song and a Gift to the world. Be every good name and every good thing. And, Sweet baby, take one more name if you will because I hope you will be blessed with a long, blissful, beautiful and meaningful life I hope you are Chaim.

6 Essentials of Hanukkah B H The Young Israel of Chomedey is pleased to sponsor our Annual Family Hanukkah Party on the first night of Hanukkah Sunday Dec 2, 2018 / 24 Kislev 5779 All Young Israel and Shaar Shalom members and their families are invited to attend the lighting of the first Hanukkah Candle which will take place at approximately 4:45 PM shortly after Mincha / Ma ariv services at 4:00 PM The party festivities and Hanukkah serve-yourself buffet will start at 5 PM Bring your children & grandchildren and let s make this a family event! The buffet meal will include: salads, cold cuts, latkes, egg rolls, hot dogs, knishes, chicken wings, sufganiyot, wine and spirits (over 18 only) and other goodies! Traditional music to be provided by our amazing and multi-talented Rabbi. BRING THE KIDS AND GRANDKIDS A Hanukkah sing-along and toys for the grandkids will add to the festive atmosphere and make this a truly wonderful family simcha, to be enjoyed by all! Candle-Lighting Ceremony with the Grand Hannukiya on our front lawn - weather permitting. A sumptuous full-course dinner will be served in our elegant dining hall. Soft music by the world-reknowned DJ Lahit BaRosh will be entertaining us with Hanukkah and traditional Jewish and Israeli music in the background. Wine will be served.
