All five of her children have gathered this Shabbos in Brooklyn commemorating her Yahrzeit, spending time together and visiting her resting place prior to Shabbos. Chana Leah was a teacher in Crown Heights for many years and a dedicated mother, well known and very respected in her Crown Heights community. She was born to her parents R Shimon and Esther Goldman, respected Crown Heights residents, and spent her life learning and later teaching in the Associated Beth Rivkah Schools. Always looking out for the children who needed extra help. She was full of Chessed, a kind and good hearted person who was the best friend anyone can ask for. She was a true Aishes Chayil - a good daughter, a good wife and a devoted mother and mother in law. Today All 5 of her children have a child named after her. Her memory lives on in their hearts forever. Tehey Nishmata Tezerura Bitzror Hachayim. May her soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life, May her memory be a blessing for all those whose lives she touched - Amen!

2 Liquor Donations: A bottle was donated by Rabbi Banon in honour of the Kiddish for his mother-in-law Z L, as well as his and Rebbetzin Rochel s 10th Wedding Ann - ken yirbu! Rabbi Banon s Class: Rabbi Banon s class this week will take place on Thursday Dec 20, at 7:45 PM after Ma ariv services. Rabbi Halperin s Class: Rabbi Halperin s Class will also take place this week on Tuesday Dec 18th at 7:45 PM Birthdays: a) Today Shabbat, 7th Tevet Gabbai Moshe Levinger celebrates his 78th birthday; b) and next Thursday 12 Tevet / Dec 20th, let us not forget our own Rabbi Avram Banon s 33rd birthday - MAZAL TOV ad but that s not all of course... Anniversaries: a) This past Tuesday, the 3rd of Tevet / Dec 11th, the Rabbi and his wonderful wife Rochel celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. I have been reliably informed that the symbol for a 10th wedding anniversay is tin and aluminum. Neverthless Rabbi, I trust you did not buy Rebbetzin Rochel a set of new pots and pans for your 10th wedding anniversary; that may be sending the wrong message. MAZAL TOV, with many many more to come in good health; b) MAZAL TOV also to Doris & Danny Silverman celebrating their 58th Anniversary on Monday Dec 17th - we wish them many more anniversaries in good health. Condolences: Chevra Mishnayis and Young Israel are sad to announce the passing of Marty Wasserman, on Dec 6th. He was laid to rest on Dec 9th at the Knights of Phythias cemetery in Duvernay. Marty was the beloved husband of the late Stella, and cherished father and father-in-law of Arthur, Reissa, Marlene and Ron Schindelheim, as well as the proud and loving grandfather of Sarah and Leah. He will be sadly missed by siblings and in-laws, as well as by many neices, nephews, other family members and cherished friends. Marty was associated with the Chevra Mishnayis for many years and was associated with the coffee clutch that included Lou Gontovick, Jack Goldberg, and Harvey Nadler, alle zu lange yoren. He was always a hard working provider, working mostly in transport. He was beset with multiple health issues and his loving children supported him unconditionally with tender love until his passing at age 90. May the Family Know no Further Sorrows Hanukkah Party: Our Young Israel and Shaar Shalom co-sponsored Hanukkah Party was an unqualified success, as measured by the comments of all in attendance. 93 people showed up and were treated to a sumptuous and delicious hot meal, with wine being served throughout. All sorts of pastries, latkes, sufganiyot, and fresh fruits brought up the rear, so to speak, and no one went home hungry. DJ Jack Lahit Barosh provided the music for our listening and dancing pleasure, and the waitresses were given a round of applause for their excellent work. The only disconcerting note is that 24 members of our shul attended, roughly the same number of 24 from Shaar Shalom, and the rest from outside guests, topped by 20 of my Israeli friends. It is, therefore, a rather sad state of affairs that between our 2 shuls, we can only count on 50 people to have a successful Hanukkah Party. Thanks go to the following individuals from both shuls for helping out in various capacities: Marty & Shirley Cohen, Sam Abramovitch, Yaffa & Sam Puterman, Mike and Sara Andradi, ZIla Baum, Frida Levinger, andf if I ve left someone out, I apologize. 3 Bar-Mitzvah: Last Sunday, on the 7th day of Hanukkah and Rosh Chodesh Tevet, the Young Israel of Chomedey and Shaar Shalom was honoured to host our first Bar-Mitzvah in a long time. The honouree was Ziv Maor, who did an excellent job, and made his parents Sarit and Ronen, his grandparents from Israel, and family members and guests as well as all shul attendees very very proud. It was indeed a festive occasion, with everyone being treated to a nice breakfast in honour of Ziv. The Rabbi gave a very inspiring Dvar Torah to honour the occasion, and we look forward to having the Maor family attending the Young Israel in the near future. 5 PARSHAT HASHAVUA - WEEKLY TORAH PORTION The Parshah in a Nutshell Vayechi Genesis 47:28 50:26 Jacob lives the final 17 years of his life in Egypt. Before his passing, he asks Joseph to take an oath that he will bury him in the Holy Land. He blesses Joseph s two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, elevating them to the status of his own sons as progenitors of tribes within the nation of Israel. The patriarch desires to reveal the end of days to his children, but is prevented from doing so. Jacob blesses his sons, assigning to each his role as a tribe: Judah will produce leaders, legislators and kings; priests will come from Levi, scholars from Issachar, seafarers from Zebulun, schoolteachers from Simeon, soldiers from Gad, judges from Dan, olive-growers from Asher, and so on. Reuben is rebuked for confusing his father s marriage bed ; Simeon and Levi, for the massacre of Shechem and the plot against Joseph. Naphtali is granted the swiftness of a deer, Benjamin the ferociousness of a wolf, and Joseph is blessed with beauty and fertility. A large funeral procession consisting of Jacob s descendants, Pharaoh s ministers, the leading citizens of Egypt and the Egyptian cavalry accompanies Jacob on his final journey to the Holy Land, where he is buried in the Machpelah Cave in Hebron. Joseph, too, dies in Egypt, at the age of 110. He, too, instructs that his bones be taken out of Egypt and buried in the Holy Land, but this would come to pass only with the Israelites exodus from Egypt many years later. Before his passing, Joseph conveys to the Children of Israel the testament from which they will draw their hope and faith in the difficult years to come: G d will surely remember you, and bring you up out of this land to the land of which He swore to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
