2 Excellent news: When I say we re all a family, I mean it. Especially our close knit executive, as we follow each other with a fine tooth comb, even when our hair falls out. Best news received this week, as VP Fred Rudy was pretty well given a clean bill of health from his prostate cancer therapy sessions. I was ecstatic upon receiving the news, and immediately let everyone know in shul last night. From a purely selfish point of view, our Exec can count on Fred continuing his devoted service to our shul and its members for some to to come. Good health to you and Lillian fred, for many years to come. Yahrzeits: Simmy Grabina has Yahrzeit for his late brother Jerry on Friday Jan 4, and will require a Minyan Thursday evening at and Friday at 7 AM. Please make very effort to attend. Anniversaries: MAZAL TOV to Bob and Ruth Mardinger, who celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary on Friday Dec. 28th, with many more to come in good health. I was curious and looked up the symbol for the 55th wedding anniversary - it s an emerald. I hope for Bob s sake, his wife Ruth doesn t read this newsletter. If she does, I m oif tzuris. I was also curious what is my next 53rd anniversary symbol coming up next July - it s plastic!!!!! That means a Tim Hortons Gift Card, but to my wife, that probably means an American Express Platinum Card. Refuah Shelma: A continued REFUAH SHLEMA to Irving Zwirek, who has now spent the better part of 2-3 months in hospitals, but news is that he will be undergoing some occupational thereapy to make him better and more mobile. And a REFUAH SHLEMA to all of his who are not feeling too good. *********************************************************** IMAGES and VIDEOS ****************** Nikki Haley left the UN with this epic speech Egyptian president is a Jew, claims Muslim Brotherhood journalist medium= &utm_content=israeli+anti-drone+system+saves+london+ Airport%3B+Cruz+Bill+Punishes+Palestinians+for+Funding+Terror%3B+H onduras+moving+embassy+to+jerusalem%3f&utm_campaign= _ m _israeli+anti-drone+system+saves+london+airport%3b+cruz +Bill+Punishes+Palestinians+for+Funding+Terror%3B+Honduras+Moving+E mbassy+to+jerusalem%3f&utm_term=ap x169_jpg The flashmob in Ben Gurion Airport that caught EVERYONE S attention with music and dance to welcome new immigrants! 3 Telephone survey: Last month, a world-wide telephone survey was conducted by the UN. The only question asked was:- Would you please give your honest opinion about possible solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world. The survey was a complete failure because: In Eastern Europe they didn t know what honest meant. In Western Europe they didn t know what shortage meant. In Africa they didn t know what food meant. In China they didn t know what opinion meant. In the Middle East they didn t know what solution meant. In South America and Russia they didn t know what please meant. In the USA they didn t know what the rest of the world meant. And in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Britain everyone hung up as soon as they heard the Indian accent! 4 PARSHAT HASHAVUA - WEEKLY TORAH PORTION The Parshah in a Nutshell Va eira Exodus 6:2 9:35 G d reveals Himself to Moses. Employing the four expressions of redemption, He promises to take out the Children of Israel from Egypt, deliver them from their enslavement, redeem them, and acquire them as His own chosen people at Mount Sinai; He will then bring them to the land He promised to the Patriarchs as their eternal heritage. Moses and Aaron repeatedly come before Pharaoh to demand in the name of G d, Let My people go, so that they may serve Me in the wilderness. Pharaoh repeatedly refuses. Aaron s staff turns into a snake and swallows the magic sticks of the Egyptian sorcerers. G d then sends a series of plagues upon the Egyptians. The waters of the Nile turn to blood; swarms of frogs overrun the land; lice infest all men and beasts. Hordes of wild animals invade the cities; a pestilence kills the domestic animals; painful boils afflict the Egyptians. For the seventh plague, fire and ice combine to descend from the skies as a devastating hail. Still, the heart of Pharaoh was hardened and he would not let the children of Israel go, as G d had said to Moses.

6 NOSTALGIA THE BACKGROUND OF THE JEWISH CONGREGA- TION OF ST.MARTIN (1959) - HUMBLE BEGINNINGS The Jewish Congregation of St.Martin had it s humble beginnings in the minds and hearts of a handful of new suburban residents who dedicated themselves to the establishment of a true Orthodox Synagogue to serve the needs of an expanding Jewish community in Laval County. The first Jewish settlement in St.Martin was concentrated in an area East of what was known as The Laurentian Highway (Labelle Boulevard). It was known as the Mayfield Project. The original charter members with faith in the prophetic future, purchased a 6 room bungalow which now serves as the present headquarters of the Congregation of St.Martin at 1859 Romiti Street in St.Martin. The entire upper level has been completely renovated and sectionalized into classrooms that accommodate an amazing total of 120 children daily! The downstairs room with a seating capacity of 60 serves as the chapel where minyanim are held regularly on weekdays and Shabbos. During the summer of 1959 our membership soared past the 250 mark, and with the arrival of Rabbi Solomon Spiro as our spiritual leader, various activities associated with the Shul organization were intensified. The Ladie s Sisterhood which raises funds through organized social functions is by far the most potent force behind our Synagogue movement, and our Men s Club provides the working corps for all of the Shul s major undertakings. The membership at large has pledged to work untiringly during the coming year towards the practical realization of its dream of holding High Holiday Services in 1960 in our own Synagogue building! The congregation looks forward with pride to its membership in the unique family of Synagogues bearing the name of Young Israel, and its dedicated ideals of furthering true Orthodoxy, Brotherly love, and Mutual Assistance.
