Ralph and Paul co-sponsor a Kiddish each year in honour of the Yarzheit of Ralph & Beatrice s beloved daughter Lori Z L & in honour of the Yarzheits of Paul s beloved parents Alexander and Sarolta Kulik Z L. The Kiddush usually takes place in early December when we also celebrate Ralph s birthday on December 4. Ralph will be turning a very young 92. May he be blessed with many more happy and healthy years until 120. Welcome Back: WELCOME BACK and BRUCHIM HABAIM to our own Rabbi Avram Banon and his family from his epic trip back to his birthplace in Morocco, where I m sure it was very emotional for him to see his brother and other family members and friends. But it is equally emotional for us to have him back after a 2-week absence, and just in time for Hanukkah; he will have very little rest as he prepares for our own Family Hanukkah Party B H next Sunday evening. The Rabbi later on will share his trip with us via photos in a coming newsletter. Rabbi Banon s Class: The Rabbi s class this week will take place on Thursday Nov 29th, after Ma ariv services at7:45 PM. Rabbi Halperin s Class: Also, Rabbi Halperin s next class will be on Tuesday night, November 27th, after Ma ariv services at 7:45 PM. Everyone is welcome to join & participate.

2 Birthdays: a) As noted in last week s bulletin, on Thursday Nov 22, Irving Zwirek celebrated his 85th birthday. I called him at the rehab where he is at, as did a a number of other members, and he was glad to hear from us. He was quite upbeat in spite of his condition and thanked us all for our good wishes and prayers, and looks forward to be being back in shul. May he have a full REFUAH SHLEMA as quickly as possible, Hanukkah: One week to go and counting down the dreidls. Our annual Family Hanukkah Party on Dec 2 is completely sold out; mind you it s easy to sell out when it s a freebie! There is literally no more room, and with 15 tables to be set up, we are not taking any more reservations. It should prove to be the most successful annual Young Israel Family Hanukkah Party ever. And the Hanukkah Dinner-Dance on Saturday Dec 8, also got a reprieve, with a few more couples reserved and paid for, so that is also a go! There is still room for another 2 tables, so please call the office and don t miss out. Israel Bonds: The Montreal Israel Bond office innaugurated its new premises downtown on de Maisonneuve West, just outside the Atwater Metro Station. I was invited to attend the ceremony last Monday AM, and the Young Israel of Chomedey was honoured when I was asked to put up a Mezuzah on one of their doors. In addition, the President and CEO of Israel Bonds, Avi Maimon, asked me to convey his personal wishes to our members for our support of the State of Israel, in this its 70th Anniversary Year. Condolences: To long-time YIC member Danny Silverman and the Silverman Family on the passing of Danny s beloved brother Irving Z L who passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 18, Irving was the beloved husband of Cecile for sixty-three years, and a loving father, grandfather, father-in-law and uncle to his many family members. Irving will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. Funeral services took place last Tuesday, November 20; Shiva instructions can be found at the Papermans site. 4 PARSHAT HASHAVUA - WEEKLY TORAH PORTION The Parshah in a Nutshell Vayeishev Genesis 37:1 40:23 Jacob settles in Hebron with his twelve sons. His favorite is seventeen-year-old Joseph, whose brothers are jealous of the preferential treatment he receives from his father, such as a precious many-colored coat that Jacob makes for Joseph. Joseph relates to his brothers two of his dreams which foretell that he is destined to rule over them, increasing their envy and hatred towards him. Simeon and Levi plot to kill him, but Reuben suggests that they throw him into a pit instead, intending to come back later and save him. While Joseph is in the pit, Judah has him sold to a band of passing Ishmaelites. The brothers dip Joseph s special coat in the blood of a goat and show it to their father, leading him to believe that his most beloved son was devoured by a wild beast. Judah marries and has three children. The eldest, Er, dies young and childless, and his wife, Tamar, is given in levirate marriage to the second son, Onan. Onan sins by spilling his seed, and he too meets an early death. Judah is reluctant to have his third son marry her. Determined to have a child from Judah s family, Tamar disguises herself as a prostitute and seduces Judah himself. Judah hears that his daughter-in-law has become pregnant and orders her executed for harlotry, but when Tamar produces some personal effects he left with her as a pledge for payment, he publicly admits that he is the father. Tamar gives birth to twin sons, Peretz (an ancestor of King David) and Zerach. Joseph is taken to Egypt and sold to Potiphar, the minister in charge of Pharaoh s slaughterhouses. G d blesses everything he does, and soon he is made overseer of all his master s property. Potiphar s wife desires the handsome and charismatic lad; when Joseph rejects her advances, she tells her husband that the Hebrew slave tried to force himself on her, and has him thrown into prison. Joseph gains the trust and admiration of his jailers, who appoint him to a position of authority in the prison administration. In prison, Joseph meets Pharaoh s chief butler and chief baker, both incarcerated for offending their royal master. Both have disturbing dreams, which Joseph interprets; in three days, he tells them, the butler will be released and the baker hanged. Joseph asks the butler to intercede on his behalf with Pharaoh. Joseph s predictions are fulfilled, but the butler forgets all about Joseph and does nothing for him.
