August is known for many things, including the dog days of summer, National Watermelon Day (Aug. 3) and National Smile Week (Aug. 5-11). But there are many other fun facts associated with summer s last full month. August is named after Augustus Caesar, founder and the first emperor of the Roman Empire, who was posthumously adopted by his maternal great-uncle Gaius Julius Caesar. In the early Roman calendar, August was actually the sixth month of the year. It was originally 30 days in length, but an extra day was added so that it would equal the number of days in July, which was named after Julius Caesar. The official flower for August is the gladiolus. These vertical-growing flowers were named from the Latin "gladius," meaning a sword. Fans of Elvis Presley mourn each Aug. 16th, the day the famed singer died in 1977.On Aug. 24th in 79 A.D.; the volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted, destroying the city of Pompeii and others. On Aug. 21, 1911, the Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre Gallery and not recovered for two years. Although civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr., is honored in January, when he was born, he is best known for his famed "I have a dream" speech, which was given on Aug. 28, 1963.The month of August is often referred to as the "dog days of summer" but not because of pet pooches. It has to do with the star Sirius, also known as the dog star, which rose at the same time as sunrise during the month of August in ancient Roman times. In the Jewish calendar August is known as Tisha B'Av or "the ninth of Av". It is an annual fast day in Judaism which commemorates the anniversary of a number of disasters in Jewish history, primarily the destruction of both the First Temple by the Babylonians and the Second Temple by the Romans in Jerusalem. The month of August in the Jewish tradition is also a time to begin the process of asking forgiveness for wrongs done to other people. According

2 to Jewish teaching, God cannot forgive us for sins committed against another person until we have first obtained forgiveness from the person we have wronged. Many people in the Jewish realm visit cemeteries, because the awe-inspiring nature of this time makes us think about life and death and our own mortality. God s blessings to you, In Christ Pastor Nathan Letter from the Youth Director August Youth News.. The teens continue to meet on Wednesday afternoons from 1-3pm for Youth. We have had several variations on our lessons and continue to head to the park to round up new friends when the weather permits. We had a wonderful bonfire the Dosh s hosted last Friday night. We started out with bean bag toss and hot dogs and ended with swimming and s more s tons of fun!! Thank you so much Steve and Kathy! Youth group worship is this Sunday and we are looking forward to sharing with you. Also planned is a youth group service Sunday, September 3 rd :>) We will be helping out at the fair so look for us at the CEF Booth in the Ruth Butler Building. Also this Sunday after church the youth will going on a waterfall hunt. Anyone interested in joining please speak to Colleen and be prepared to dress in waterfall camo. Financials as of July 30, 2017 Year to Date Giving $131, Year to Date Budget $133, Total -$1, Covenant Women COVENANT WOMEN PICNIC SATURDAY, AUGUST 26, 2017 Join us for our annual potluck picnic on Saturday, August 26 th. A sign-up sheet will be available soon with further details. We will meet at the church parking lot at 11:15 a.m. to share rides to Little Lake. Mary Ellen Hund will be our hostess at her lake home. You won t want to miss this fun time in the outdoors to relax and enjoy the fellowship. All women are welcome. PLANNING MEETING THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 7, :00 P.M. Join us to kick off the fall planning for Covenant Women. We will be talking about the hunters bake sale and the Christmas brunch as well as other events for the fall season. All women are welcome. Dessert will be served.

3 FALL WOMEN S RETREAT COVENANT POINT BIBLE CAMP SEPTEMBER 22-24, 2017 Ladies, pick up your registration form for fall retreat in the hallway near the Covenant Women bulletin board. An exciting weekend is planned in God s beautiful outdoors with Bonnie Sparrman of Excelsior, Minnesota speaking on Grace Happens at the Table. Let s get a large group together to enjoy the inspiration and worship of this wonderful event. Scholarships are available to help with the cost. Please contact Betty Giovenco. ELMER S COMMUNITY CARE PROGRAM If you are registered to gain points through purchases at Elmer s in Escanaba, points can be donated to the church by telling the clerk to transfer points to the Covenant Church. A minimum of 500 points is required for each transfer. The proceeds will be used to buy kitchen supplies such as coffee, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, etc. Pick up a card at the Welcome Center as your reminder. Thanks for your support!
