1 JOHN CALVIN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Natural Bridge Road Bridgeton, MO Call Check us out at Newsletter: Today is Wednesday, February 21, 2018 JOHN CALVIN CHURCH PRESENTS A Night of Pasta & Praise This Friday February 23 PASTA DINNER SERVED 6:00-7PM $10 per adult / $5 per child PRAISE CONCERT AT 7PM The service for Doyle Whitten will be held this Saturday at 11:30am with a bereavement meal to follow. We are asking for your help with desserts. Please call the church office if you are able to help. ABOUT THIS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25 As we continue with our sermon series, The Gospel According to Dr. Seuss, we will look at that character known as The Cat. The Cat appears in two books, the first one is called, The Cat in the Hat and the second one follows called, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back. Suffice it to say that the Cat in the Hat has very little care about time and deadlines. He lives life, always wanting to play, even if his play creates catastrophes and sways people away from their assigned tasks. I remember back in my grade school days, when we would get recess, often on nice weather days, many of the class members would get pretty wound up and when recess was over and we all came back to class, there was still much playing going on. I remember one of our teachers was, Mrs. George, who tolerated none of that. After a few seconds she would make everyone stand up at their seat and she would say, Play time is over, now sit down and let's get to work. In this story, the narrator is identified simply as me but has a sister named Sally. They are given some work to do but when the Cat in the Hat shows up, work gives way to the playfulness of the Cat. In the end, everything gets cleaned up with the help of something magical the cat pulls out of his hat called Voom. Jesus called upon his disciples to travel on a Mission Trip to spread the word. There was much work to do. There was no time to play. Jesus even indicates by using growing crops that the harvest is great, but the laborers are few. In church work we like to have fun. But we must always be reminded of our first and foremost call as a church and that is to preach and teach about Jesus Christ. There will be time to play, but then there will be time to get back to work. We will talk about all of that this Sunday. See you then. ~ Pastor John PASTOR'S DISCRETIONARY FUND The JCPC Session authorized an offering to be applied to the Pastor s Discretionary Fund which will allow Pastor John to anonymously help members and friends of our church who have financial issues. This is not a fund to be used to hand out money to anyone who comes asking at the door. The Session has authorized a special offering to be taken this Sunday, February 25. Offering envelopes will be in your bulletin if you would like to contribute to this cause. Pastor John will say more about this during worship this Sunday. THIS SUNDAY WOMEN S MOVIE DISCUSSION GROUP IN JCPC LIBRARY 9:30 10:25 This group will continue the movie discussion of Emma, an adaptation of Jane Austen s classic 1815 novel. Emma is the story of a rich, intelligent, and beautiful young woman who can t resist matchmaking for her friends. Last Sunday we looked at what Bible verses say about pride, and discussed its positive virtues as well as when God considers pride a hindrance to our trust in him. There is no cost, all materials are provided and all women are welcome at any time. We hope you will visit this group and see if it interests you.

It will be April Pricing is still in the works, but a registration form should be available by next week. See Brian Shear if you have any questions. BE CONTAGIOUS! Sounds scary during flu season, but we are talking about BECOMING A CONTAGIOUS CHRISTIAN, a training experience that will equip you to share your faith in a personal and natural style that fits you all in one day! This is a DVD-based course, dynamically presented by Mark Mittelberg, Lee Strobel, and Bill Hybels. Our first offering of this course is intended primarily for Session members but our goal is to quickly train the whole congregation. All are therefore invited to the first class. Why should I take this course? Our marching orders, given in the so-called Great Commission, are to make disciples (Matt. 28:19). In responding to this call, it is best to put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:11). These Biblical teachings are reflected in the Mission Statement of JCPC, adopted in 1997, which includes the following Becoming a Church of Prayer and Outreach through Bible study, worship, and discipling. The first course will be given in six one-hour sessions, from 9am to approximately 4pm (including a break for lunch) on Saturday, March 10. You will receive a workbook which will be a valuable reference tool to remind you what you have learned and to further develop your skills. The total cost (workbook plus lunch) is $ Please register by signing up at the signup table. The Mission Action Team will meet this Sunday Feb. 25 after church in the PW Room. If anyone would like to be a part of this team please join us or contact any member of the committee: Rosalea Vogler, the Messersmiths, the Elliotts, Jim Lueker, or Mary Myers. Saturday, March 3 at 11:30 Presbyterian Women Friday, March 9 at 11:30 Goldtimers to Fratellis March 25 Palm Sunday. We will have a combined worship with the Korean Presbyterian Church. The worship time will be at 11:00 and there will be a potluck meal. March 29 There is a signup sheet for Maundy Thursday Service with Holy Communion. A meal of PJ s stew and salad will begin at 6pm and the service will be at 7pm in the GE room. April 1 Easter Sunday. The Session agreed to forgo an Easter Sunrise Service this year.
