1 The Kibbitzer Temple Am Shalom Mentor, Ohio JULY 2018 TAMMUZ-AV 5778 It sure has been an interesting month here at Temple Am Shalom. Towards the end of May, we experienced a power outage in Mentor and our kitchen sump pump must have lost power and overflowed into our newly refurbished downstairs. Once again, we had water, water everywhere. Thanks to our wonderful friends at ServePro, who originally demolished our downstairs, they came to our rescue and saved 90% of our renovations. After having approximately 50 fans going over the Memorial Day weekend, the basement is now dry and the baseboards are being repainted and reinstalled. Andy Kenen has been working hard on getting this accomplished, while Janet Evangelista reorganized the A WORD FROM RENÉE kitchen and put things back in order. Thanks to both of them for their hard work and dedication to Am Shalom. Our recent Shabbat Pasta dinner and service was a big hit and was enjoyed by all. The winner of the Heinen s gift certificate was Ronnie Abrams. Congratulations! I spoke with Ronnie to tell her of her good fortune and she immediately turned it back to the Temple to use for our next Oneg or dinner. Thank you, Ronnie. Our next event is our summer Tailgate Party on Friday, July 20 at 6:00 pm. Shabbat service following at 7:30. Cost is $10.00 per person. Please R.S.V.P. to the Temple Office by July16, so we know how much food to buy. Andy s initial Memoirs class had SCHEDULE OF EVENTS eight participants, who thoroughly enjoyed our first session. I still have to sit down and write my first memoir, but I have plenty ideas to choose from. It was so interesting listening to everyone s memories, experiencing what they felt in their own words. Great job, Andy! I can t wait until our next session. SAVE THE DATE: August 12 Temple Picnic at Andy s house in Bainbridge. More details in August Kibbitzer Our next Shabbat service will be on July 6 at 7:30 pm. Please join us. Looking forward to seeing you soon. 2 Memoirs Class Page 2 Thanks Andy, a good time was had by all, and learned a bunch!! Temple Am Shalom Picnic Join us Sunday, August 12 for the annual Temple Am Shalom picnic. The party begins at 3 pm at Andy Kenen s Kenston Lake Road, Bainbridge Township he supplies BBQ chicken and ribs. BYOB and a dish to pass (appetizer, side, or desserts). The pool is heated to a toasty 84 degrees so BYOBS (bring your own bathing suits). Children and grand-children are invited. RSVP to Temple office, akenen@gmail.com, or Andy s cell number Thanks to Bruce for all he does to keep Temple lawn looking great!! Our old lawn mower is a dinosaur and not repairable. So our President (Andy) has gotten Bruce a something that will help him do his projects. Bruce, hope you like your new equipment. OLD NEW

3 Dues Process Nobody likes paying dues, but we need to keep Temple Am Shalom open. Each year we try to adjust our dues to cover our budget. Obviously, the more dues paying members we have, the less people will have to pay. New Treasurer, Brian Zinner, has yet to set up a billing system to remind people to make their payments. He s really been busy with learning our bookkeeping software and setting up some new procedures for our direct pay system and a temple credit card. And, of course all of the changeover from Ron and Rita came in the middle of tax season. So, please if you know you have a payment due, send it to the Temple at P.O. Box 1507 Mentor, OH , or drop it off at the Temple office. If you have questions, call Brian at or him at bzinnercpa@gmail.com. Remember, you have to be up to date with your dues to be able to vote at the annual meeting, July 29. I ve Got the Lawn Mowin Blues Sounds like the beginning of a Buddy Guy song, but in reality, it describes this summer for member, Bruce Call. Beginning last year, Bruce has taken on the task of keeping our lawn trimmed at Temple Am Shalom. Each week he cuts, trims, and rakes the trimmings. At the beginning of this summer he noticed that our mower needed a little work. A bit of research led us to learn that he was mowing with a 20 th century antique that is at least 40 years old. Parts are no longer available, the blade is chipping away, and it leaks gas. Don t even think that it might have any of today s safety features. So began the quest for a new mower. Bruce, being an environmentally conscious kind of guy gave up on the old machine and has been using a manual, push mower. No gas here. But this seems like we re going backwards. So, finally he was rewarded with a new Ryobi battery operated mower. It s safe for the environment and gives a great cut. Thank you Bruce for all of your work keeping our landscaping looking sharp. Page 3 NOTE FROM TEMPLE PRESIDENT As we celebrate on July 4 th our thoughts turn to the birth of our country and the pioneering spirits of the founding fathers and mothers. My swing band, The Garrett tones, has a long-standing gig playing a traditional ice cream social at Hiram College. It s a community event that unites the townies and college people over sweet desserts. They even have a pie baking contest. Our swing music from the 30 s and 40 s ties it all together as couples dance under the stars. So, what does this have to do with Temple Am Shalom? We re pioneers too, bringing our religious beliefs to our neighbors in Lake County. As we build our Temple community, we are also building bridges to our neighbors. This past week we had two events at the Temple. On Wednesday, my Memoirs class saw eight people learning to write about their experiences, for future generations. Three of our classmates read about the course in the News Herald and took the risky step of joining us in our house. On Friday, we had a pasta dinner before our Shabbat service. It was well attended, but we could always add a few people. We ve ordered 20 more prayer books to accommodate our expanding Friday night crowds. As we grow together, so grows our community. We also reach out to take our place with the churches in Lake County. My goal is for the community to know us. When I announce that I m from Temple Am Shalom, I don t want people to ask, what s that? But I can t do it alone. Come, get involved, and bring a friend. Attend Shabbat services, join us for Temple events. Make your voices heard by participating at the Annual Meeting, July 29 at 10 a.m. You ll love the donuts, and the people. Andy

4 Page 4 GET INVOLVED ATTEND THE ANNUAL MEETING Join us on Sunday, July 29 at 10 a.m. for the 2018 Temple Am Shalom Annual Meeting. Article III B-1 of the Constitution and By-Law states that you must be current with your membership payments. Ballots and proxies will be mailed to all members in good standing before the Annual Meeting. Every adult member in good standing is entitled to one vote. If you wish to become a member of the Temple Am Shalom Board of Directors petitions are available at the Temple office or will be mailed to you if you contact Andy Kenen at akenen@gmail.com or (440) Please join us and get involved in your religious community.
