2 Page 2 THE KIBBITZER Shushan Purim Why Jerusalem celebrates Purim a day later. All cities that were walled at the time when the Israelites, under the leadership of Joshua, entered Canaan, celebrate Purim a day later, on the 15th. This results in the occasional unique phenomena of a triple or three-day Purim. The Fast of Esther Haman s Final Solution was scheduled for the 13th of Adar. Instead, Haman was hanged, and by royal decree the Jews mobilized in self-defense and successfully defended themselves against all attacks. On the next day, the 14th of Adar, the Jews rested, savored their miraculous salvation, and established the holiday of Purim. Whenever in peril, we are commanded to institute a fast day to repent, pray, and ask for Divine mercy. Thus the 13th of Adar, the day of battle, was a day of fasting. FUNDRAISING/ACTIVITIES MEETING WEDNESDAY MARCH 9 7:00PM at the temple We need your ideas and your help We need to raise funds to finish the basement renovation install new walls and floors and install a new kitchen.

3 Page 3 The following article was excerpted from Ten Minutes of Torah Reform Life, Jewish Life published on Reform Judaism.org on 2/18/2016. Rabbi David S. Vaisberg is the spiritual leaderfor Temple Emanu-El in Edison NJ. He was ordained at HUC-JIR in New York City and is an alumnus of the Mandel Fellowship. Reform Life, Jewish Life Birkhat HaMazon: More Than a Simple Thank You By Rabbi David S. Vaisberg When you have eaten your fill give thanks to the Eternal your God for the good land given to you. (Deut. 8:10) No matter what s going on I always feel better after bensching (praying Birkat HaMazon, the blessing after meals). Whether I m praying together with friends or silently with the tune running through my head the melody is uplifting, cheerful, and energetic. I m filled with the nostalgia of praying together among friends at camp and youth group, which connects me with them across time and space. I m expressing gratitude, and just as smileseven when they are forcedhave a way of making the smiler happier, so too does stating gratitude cause us to feel that gratitude a bit more. But most importantly, when I pray Birkat HaMazon, I enter into relationship with the Holy One, the Eternal, the Source of Life. To eat without prayer can certainly be pleasurable, but the act ends as quickly as it began when that final morsel has been swallowed. But, when food exists as part of a relationship, it becomes something more. When we eat a meal with friends, we nourish our bodies with the food, and we nourish our souls by engaging with those at the table. When loved ones prepare a meal for us, we thank them. We express appreciation by asking about the recipes and ingredients or remarking on how the flavors danced on our tongues or reminded us of our grandmothers kitchens. Through our actions, we make them feel good about their graciousness on our behalf. Imagine if we offered that same outpouring of praise to the cheese monger who sold us that block of cheddar, the farmer who painstakingly grew our tomatoes, or the factory-owner whose business produces the bottles that hold our wine. Imagine if we could enter into relationships of appreciation with everyone who contributed to our satiation. To do so would elevate them, and in connecting with another human being, elevate us in turn. When would this praise best be offered? One could say thank you at the time of purchase or receipt, but having not yet tried the food and being distracted by hunger, our thank you would not be as sincere as it might be. After eating, though, we feel good. We feel full. It is with this fullness of heart and mind that we offer thanks, and devote our energies to giving back. This is what Birkat HaMazon is all about. Saying thank you is a prescriptionto ensure humility and appreciationagainst the consequences of taking this world for granted. It s a blessing, it s connecting to the Source of all, and it s developing a regular practice of acknowledging our gratitude. When we bensch Birkat HaMazon, whether we use the long or short version, we do far more than simply saying thank you. We begin with Birkat Hazanan invitation to bless that comes from the prayer leader to those who are with him or her, which is followed by that first sacred blessing that thanks God directly for our food and sustenance. Second comes Birkat Ha aretz, the blessing that thanks God for the land that produces so much nutritious bounty; in this process of blessing we move from the micro of our tables to the macro of a sustaining eco-system. After our bodies have been satisfied, we pray for more: in asking for the rebuilding of JerusalemBirkat Yerushalayim - we request the well-being of our Jewish spirits. Noting how much goodness we have around us and how much more is still needed, we pray Birkat HaTov v HaMeitiv, asking God to bring blessing, a little bit of which we have just tasted, to all who need it. Finally, like all good prayer services, we end with a request for peace, a Birkat Shalom. Oseh shalom bimromav...may the one who makes peace in the high heavens, make peace for us, for all Israel, and all who inhabit the earth. Amen. Birkat HaMazon connects us to that which connects the entire universe. We elevate, exalt, and bless. We fill ourselves with gratitude, turning this positive energy toward those who have been good to us, and to all those in need of goodness. To bless after meals acknowledges that we are never isolated when we receive and consume. Rather, we are part of an amazing interconnected universe and in relationship with many, including the One who cares for us all. Calling All Holy Rock and Rollers Temple Am Shalom is planning a trip to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum on Sunday May 15 We would spend about three hours touring the museum and then go to lunch Car pools would be arranged for the trip. 4 Page 4 THE KIBBITZER MARCH Torah Portion The following article is excerpted from Ten Minutes of Torah Reform Voices of Torah from urj.org on February 21, Rabbi Dan Levin, (at the time of this writing), is the senior rabbi at Temple Beth El of Boca Raton, FL. Rabbi Neil Hirsch (at the time of this writing), is a rabbi at Temple Shalom of Newton in Newton, Mass. D VAR TORAH Vayak heil: Exodus 35:1-38:20 A Palace for God, and For Us Dan Levin A few weeks ago, I shared a study session with parents of our congregation s third-graders. The curriculum for the third grade includes study of the Ten Commandments. In the course of our conversation, I asked the grup which of the Ten Commandments they felt was the most difficult to observe. The answer was not: Do not covet. It wasn t Honor your father and mother, and thankfully, it wasn t You shall not murder. The general consensus was that observing Shabbat was the most difficult. Why? The sense among the parents was there was just way too much to do. Kids had sports contests, play practice, dance recitals. They talked about how they spent so much time during the week working and managing the household, it seemed too difficult to take time out for the rest, for reflection, for Shabbat. So it seemed interesting to me in looking at this week s portion, Parashat Vayak heil, that Moses, having just returned from the summit of Sinai bearing the tablets of the Ten Commandments, calls the community of Israel together. And what is his first message? Observe Shabbat: On six days work may be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a Sabbath of complete rest, holy to the Eternal... (Exodus 35:2). Why, we must ask, does Moses reiterate a discussion of Shabbat just before the work on the Tabernacle, the Mishkan, is to be organized? I think one answer is found in comparing how the Mishkan is described earlier in Exodus and how the task is redefined here. Earlier, in Exodus, chapter 25, God speaks to Moses and asks that the Israelites bring gifts from anyone whose heart is moved to build the Mishkan. The text tells us the purpose of the project: And let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them (Exodus 25:8) Ultimately, the Tabernacle was to be built in some measure as a home for God in the midst of the community, a palace wherein the Holy Presence might reside. In our parashah this week, however, there is no mention of God s ultimate Torah Portions for MARCH MAR 5 Vayak hel Exodus 35:1-38:20 MAR 12 Pekudei Exodus 38:21-40:38 MAR 19 Vayikra Leviticus 1:1-5:26 MAR 26 Tzav Leviticus 6:1-8:36 intent, no reassurance that God s Presence will dwell in the sanctuary they now choose to build. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, in his great work on the Sabbath, wrote that Jewish ritual and celebration is a form of architecture too, but whereas Bezalei and Oholiab are given the honor to serve as architects of holy space, each of us is given the responsibility to be an architect of holy time. (Abraham Joshua Heschel, The Sabbath: Its Meaning for Modern Man (New York: Noonday Press, 1951), p.8.) The Sabbath, Heschel writes, is a palace in time which we build. (Ibid.pp 14-15) Given the stresses of the workday week, the pressures we feel to build and achieve, it is natural that we feel some sense of distance from God and our spiritual selves. As Heschel writes, Six days a week the spirit is alone, disregarded, forsaken, forgotten. Working under strain, beset with worries, enmeshed in anxieties, man has no mind for ethereal beauty. But the spirit is waiting for man to join it. (Ibid, p. 65) It is Shabbat that allows our spirits and our selves to become reconnected and reacquainted. The Chasidic rabbi, Mordechai Yosef of Isbitza, in his commentary Mei Hashiloach, teaches that the whole reason for building the Mishkan was for the people to come together as one to rekindle their understanding and passion for real holiness. In building a palace for God in their midst, they were in fact learning to build a palace for God in their souls. They realized that each and every Israelite had a role to play in building a home for God, for if so much as a nail were missing the Shechina (God s holy presence) would not rest in the Mishkan. [Betsalel Philip Edwards, ed. and trans. Living WatersThe Mei HaShiloach: A Commentary on the Torah by Rabbi Morechai Yosef of Isbitza (New York: Jason Aronson Pubishers, 2001), pp ] But it was in their coming together as a community, in seeing the holiness in each other and in their common work, that God s love would be felt. And it is only on Shabbat, when we take a step back, that we complete the work of creation in building that palace of holy time. The six days of our week need to be spent in work, and as our tradition guides us, that work must ultimately be for the sake of heaven. And when we think of the work we do in our careers and in taking care of our families and communities, that work seems very holy indeed. But Moses teaches us here that even the holy work of constructing the Tabernacle is made profane if we forsake Shabbat to build it. We bring gifts from our heart to build the Tabernacle, a palace for God in our midst. And God brings us the gift of Shabat, in order that we may build a palace in time for God to dwell in our souls, and our selves. D VAR ACHER If God Is To Be in the Palace, People Are Required Neil E. Hirsch We know of two palaces in our tradition. One is the Mishkan that the Israelites construct and place in the center of their camp for God to dwell among them. The other is Dr. Heschel s palace in timeshabbat. Both a physical palace and a temporal palace require something in commonthe participation of the community. I am struck by the Chasidic teaching of Rabbi Mordechai (D var Acher Continued on page 5)

5 Page 5 Israel ConnectionGalilee Diary The following article is excerpted from Ten Minutes of Torah Israel Connections from urj.org on February 17, Rabbi Marc Rosenstein, until his recent retirement, served as executive director of Makom ba-galil, The Galilee Foundation for Value Education, a seminar center that engages in programming to foster pluralism and coexistence, and as director of the Israel Rabbinical Program of HUC- JIR in Jerusalem. Galilee Diary Dream Deferred By Marc Rosenstein What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up Like a raisin in the sun? (Langston Hughes, Harlem ) Recently I began to volunteer once a week, assisting the English literature teacher in a nearby Arab high school. I ve known the teacher, and the principal, for many years, through arranging encounters for their students with Jewish visitors, and this seems like a good way to stay in touch and involved. My first assignment was to present a background lesson to two 10 th -grade classes studying a poem by Langston Hughes ( the poet laureate of Harlem, who died in 1967). This assignment meant covering slavery, emancipation, the Civil War, Jim Crow, and the civil rights struggle, in simple English, assuming almost no historical background, in 40 minutes. Interesting challenge. Hughes wrote a lot about dreams, and the term deferred dream recurs in his poems. I have always found his poem, Harlem, quoted in part above to be moving, and eternally relevant. Even though the kids were given excerpts of Martin Luther King s I have a dream speech, for them, dreams are personal: to be a doctor, to be a professional athlete, to emigrate to the westnot universal dreams of peace, or equality, or national self-determination. That is to be expected from 16- year-olds living a sheltered middle-class life in their own village. And it certainly is not my role to educate them as to what is wrong with the worldthey ll discover that in due time. For me, on the other hand, thinking bout deferred dreams resonates on a different pitch, especially when I scan the daily headlines, and remember Herzl s dream of an enlightened, civil, pluralistic Jewish national home; or my own (D var Acher Continued from page 4) Yosef Isbitza, mentioned in this week s d var Torah. The building of the Mishkan is for the people to come together as one to rekindle their understanding and passion for real holiness. To know and be inspired by the sacred, a community is required. We see this principle at work in how our tradition treats public prayer. While the individual is entitled and encouraged to turn to God at all times, the tradition teaches the importance of communal worship (t filah b tzibur), of joining one s prayer to that of a congregation, writes Rabbi Mark Washofsky in Jewish Living: A Guide to Contemporary Reform Practice. [Jewish Living: A Guide to Contemporary Reform Practice, Revised Edition, Mark Washofsky (New York: URJ Press, 2010), p. 19] We pray in private, but Judaism is far from a monastic religion. Segments of our liturgy are only to be recited when a minyan is present. We reserve some prayers for communal worship. We call these prayers d varim shebek dushahmatters of sanctification, and they include dream when I made aliyah 25 years ago, of a Jewish state that would indeed be a light unto the nations. It often feels that we are not advancing toward the dream, but retreating from it. Since we don t do politically correct here, even the highest officials can and do make blatantly racist and belittling statements about various ethnic and political and religious groups, and it is taken for granted. At the moment we have a former prime minister and a former president in jail. We are told that Israel is too small to accept refugees. Every expression of opposition is somehow supporting terror. The Jewish state that we dreamed would represent the Jewish emergence from powerlessness is obsessed with terror, an amorphous, ubiquitous, demonic enemy, waiting at every bus stop. I find that reading the left-leaning Haaretz is depressingbut then if I read Sheldon Adlelson s Israel Today tabloid, the depression goes to despair. So what happens to a dream deferred? Well, one tempting response is to disengage, to give up, and to accept that there are forces in history more powerful than I am, and that sanity and normalcy demand that we revise the dream to be more modest and personal. If national Judaism is moving in directions with which I cannot identify, then perhaps I should redefine my Judaism as spiritual, personal, internal, local. Another common response to the nightmare voices is to fight fire with fire: Scream at them, drown them out, insult them, belittle them. It won t bring my dream any closer to realization, but it will feel good. So what is to be done? It seems to me that we Jews should understand, by now, that it is a long haul to redemption, that there is no alternative to slogging through, despite the pain and disappointment caused by the imperfect worldand an imperfect state (is there any other kind?) If Judaism has content other than nostalgia and the comforts of ethnic identity, it seems to me it resides in our being commanded to keep trying to translate the values we learned at Sinai (and thereafter) into real-life institutions. That means not screaming and not disengaging, but trying to perpetuate civil discourse and effective democracy, educating, struggling with ambiguity, listening, speaking out in support ofand fundingthe voices of justice and civility of equality and pluralism, of mercy for the disadvantaged. If we care, we don t have the luxury of reading the paper and sulking. The stakes are too high for us to let this dream dry up like a raisin in the sun. the K dushah and the Kaddish. When we pray, if we are to encounter the sacred, our tradition teaches that we might find it when we are with our community. As it is written in Leviticus 22:32, I will be sanctified in the midst of the people of Israel. There is a nursery rhyme that goes, Here is the church, and here is the steeple, open the doors, and there are the people! If God is to be found in the palaces of our tradition, it is incumbent upon us to enter those palaces with one another. God does not like empty communal halls. Prayer in community affords us something we cannot find when isolated or alonea collective effervescence. When we enter the palace of Shabbat, we are granted the gift of time to focus as a community, with voices coming together in song and prayer, sanctify God. It is in that space, among the people we love and who love us, that we might rekindle our understanding and passion for real holiness.
