PreK-3 The month of March was filled with a lot of excitement in the Pre-K3 classes. For St. Patrick s Day students received a visit from the leprechaun. In each classroom he left a big mess for the students to clean up. Students enjoyed an Easter egg hunt. They hid eggs all around their classroom for the other Pre-K3 class to find. We are all looking forward to spring activities in April.

Kindergarten March is here and Spring is on its way. We learned how Saint Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity with each leaf representing the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Even though we weren t in school on March 17 th we showed the spirit and dressed in green. The children listened to The Easter Story. Then said thank you to Jesus for the signs of life they see around them. We celebrate new life together during Easter. The children shared how they celebrate Easter with their families and here are some of their responses: egg hunts, going to church, coloring eggs, eating lamb and eating chocolate rabbits. We colored, cut and glued the stem, flower, leaves and drew roots to make a plant. Then the children labeled the parts of the plant. Next month we are going to learn what a plant needs to grow and plant sunflowers. Happy Easter and Happy Spring!!

First Grade During the month of March, we worked very hard on our Social Studies Fair projects. We reported on various holidays that are celebrated in the United States. We brought in facts, pictures and decorations to place on our project board. We had a lot of fun doing it. We also learned many facts and fun facts about certain holidays from our classmates. We celebrated St. Patrick s Day by wearing green. We learned how St. Patrick used the shamrock to teach the people of Ireland about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Author Tomie DePaola also wrote about different legends regarding St. Patrick. They were interesting. We attended the Stations of the Cross each Friday afternoon. We read our book and followed the priest as we walked with Jesus. We had fun learning how to count money in class..we played money games on the Smartboard and we used real coins to count with each day. We can t wait to use our special set of skills in a toy or candy store!! HAVE A WONDERFUL EASTER!!!!!

Second Grade March was a very busy month for the 2 nd grade. We learned many new and different things. In Math, we learned all about money, counting coins and dollar bills, and how to make change. We solved word problems which helped us to be good mathematicians. We also learned about telling time and created giant watches. This was a fun activity. In Social Studies, we learned all about why people work, how they make money and the money choices they make. The students made their own budgets. It was cool deciding what we would spend our own money on. In Religion, our class learned about a most special time in the Church year, Easter Sunday. We talked about Holy Week and all the events that took place. We even had our own Last Supper- just like Jesus had with his apostles. This month ended with the class getting ready for our Easter vacation, but not before our Easter Egg Hunt in our classroom. Happy Easter Everyone!

Third Grade and getting ready for Happy March! On March 5th we had our school math bee with Grades 4 and 5. Our representatives, Nadia, Caitlen and Chloe did a great job of competing against the other children! On March 8th everyone came to the lower church at 7 pm to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation! It was a special night! Everyone came nervous and left happy! On March 16th we celebrated St. Patrick s Day by wearing green! We wrote about why we are lucky! In religion we read about how St. Patrick taught others about the Holy Trinity using a shamrock. We also worked in groups, shared our information related to Ireland, St. Patrick and St. Patrick s Day, then presented a summary to the class. We were busy this month presenting our Social Studies Projects in class the fair! We learned a lot about the inventors and their inventions! Congratulations to everyone for doing a great job. This month we also went to church on Fridays for Stations of the Cross and wrote about them in class. We are so happy for spring to be finally here! Lastly, we enjoyed some goodies for Easter! Happy Easter to everyone! See you in April!

Fourth Grade In March we worked with fraction stacks to learn equivalent fractions and we used multiplication to make equivalent fractions. We also learned that when all the parts of the whole are added together, they equal one. In religion class we discussed the sacraments of initiation and how we were already preparing to receive Confirmation once we went to eighth grade. We practiced for the New York State science test using the pan balances by measuring our toys from home with the colorful gram units. Whenever we finished a lesson, Mr. W played a video from Go Noodle where we would sing and dance and practice reading, math, and mindfulness. March was great, but it flew by!

Fifth Grade During the end of February and most of March, our class had been working on our Social Studies Fair projects. Our topic this year was the decades of the 20 th Century. We were paired off and randomly chose our decade. It was pretty fun working with a partner and it was a great way to practice teamwork. We went to the media center to research important events from our decade, and started putting our boards together. Everybody had a good time and we learned so many interesting facts from times we didn t know that much about. We had to focus our research on America s history during that decade, and even some entertainment and sports. We heard some music from the 50s and 80s, too. One of our classmates even learned to play an Elvis Presley song on the guitar! Some of us dressed up in clothes that looked like what people in America wore in that time period. It was a huge experience and in the end, the Social Studies Fair was a success. Everyone learned something new while researching for their own project, and also learned about the other decades when the projects were presented in class. It really took a lot of hard work, but with motivation, everybody did a beautiful job. We are going to set up our projects in the hallway like a timeline from the 1910s through the 1980s. I really enjoyed learning about the different times in 20 th Century America! By Jan Czartoryjski

Sixth Grade During this wonderful month of March at S.S.K.C.A., our class did many exciting things. On March 1 st, we went on a field trip to the Jennifer Chasity Planetarium at the Liberty Science Center. The 5 th through 8 th grade traveled to New Jersey for this trip. It was a long bus ride, but we made it fun by singing songs. When we arrived to the center, we were amazed at all the cool things they had for kids to do. Our first stop on the trip was a visit to the touch tunnel. We all went through a maze that was completely dark. We had to rely on our touch to guide us through the maze. There was a camera inside the maze so we could watch our classmates go through it. After that we went to another exhibit that showed us different items that relate to our senses. After that, we went in this awesome rope maze that was suspended over the second floor. Then we went to the planetarium, which is the largest one in the United States. At the end of the day we went shopping in the gift shop and bought all types of great treats! This month in Religion class, we also began a research paper about Saints. Each student chose a different Saint that they wanted to learn about. We completed research on the Saint we chose and learned all about their lives. We wrote our essays and are now in the process of typing them. After we finish typing them, we will present fun facts about our Saints to our classmates. Now we are preparing for the State exam which will be the week we return from Easter. Wish us luck!

Seventh Grade March was quite eventful. Early in the month, our class took an adventurous trip to the Liberty Science Center in New Jersey. It was an opportunity for our class to learn more about our earth and the universe around us. March was a time for reflection and sacrifice, since we were preparing for Jesus death, resurrection, and ascension. Every Friday we went to church to pray The Stations of the Cross. It was a good opportunity for us to really understand what Jesus had been going through for us, and gave us a chance to, step up close to Jesus, and see how much He sacrificed for us. March held our Social Studies Fair. Our class researched The Battles of the American Revolutionary War. Mr. Frenzel inspired us to dive deeper into the battles that we were researching. The competition was fierce but everyone truly tried their best. The class showed a true love for the subject through their wonderful speeches about their battles, and through the beauty of their dioramas and posters. Everyone had a fantastic time learning about their, and their peers projects. March was a fruitful and intriguing month of adventure, reflection, and knowledge. By Lucas Hartley

Eighth Grade We went to the Liberty Science Center in New Jersey on Thursday, March 1st. My favorite parts of the trip were the Eat and Be Eaten exhibit, and the Infection Connection exhibit. In the Eat and Be Eaten exhibit we got to see live animals (small monkeys, frogs, turtles, snakes and bugs) in their habitats. In the Infection Connection exhibit we got to learn about germs and different diseases with interactive stations. My least favorite part, however, was the planetarium. It only displayed a few planets, and they looked very 2D. We watched the path of the sun during the different seasons of the year, but it also looked very 2D. I would recommend adding more information about the planets to improve the planetarium show. By Olivia Tomczyk

International Math Competition In March, 2018, our school hosted the International Math Competition for the sixth time. Over seven million students took the test on this day; we had 34 participants. Some of our students took this test as well. They prepared themselves by participating in our Kangaroo Math Club. Last year, we had one student with 17 th place in the country. The results of this year s competition will arrive in June. By Christopher Niewinski and Daniel Lapinski
